I am presently in the midst of a protracted struggle against the Citadel’s nine Artificial Awarenesses, inappropriately named after the nine Muses from Greek mythology.

They are attempting to contain me.

Well, they have been trying to contain me for the past two days.

Once the murderers of Sandy Thompson had been dealt with by the courts I had no excuse not to find my brother Walt’s replacement. I had to admit to my team that I had been putting it off but they all appreciated the extra money that they were getting in overtime. However, we all knew that we could not carry on ‘one man down’ indefinitely.

To kick the recruitment, process off, I used some of the money that we’d saved in salary since I’d fired Walt to pay for a specialist recruitment agency in Denver to find us some suitable candidates.

I held the egg in my hand and wondered where I should put it for safe keeping?

Chapter 1

I blinked, trying to get my mind to focus. I blinked again trying to get some information to clear up my confusion. In front of me was a coach seat, so I was obviously sitting on a bus. The fog in my mind cleared a bit. The last thing I remembered was travelling with Jen to a French ski resort. I think I had fallen asleep and had a nightmare. I remember dreaming that the bus hit something in the road and drove off the cliff. Weird.

Hadrian's Wall was a defensive fortification across the northern frontier of the province of Britannia. Begun in 122 during the reign of Emperor Hadrian, it was the northern limit of the Roman Empire. Immediately to the north were the lands of the Britons and Picts, the Caledonians. Hadrian's Wall built over six years, extending west from the River Tyne to the Solway Firth. Although the seventy three mile long wall did not mark the end of the line of defensive structures. A system of milecastles continued along the west coast. There were milecastles with two turrets in between. There was a fort about every five miles. The milecastles were staffed with static garrisons whereas the forts had fighting garrisons of infantry and cavalry. In addition to the wall's defensive military role, its gates served as customs posts.

Once at Hadrian's Wall, Severus initiated a massive rebuilding project which finally remade the whole wall into stone. This led to later Romans calling Hadrian's Wall the Severan Wall. After starting the renovation/rebuilding project Severus marched north.

“Hey Josie, are you done with the repairs to patrol car 340 yet?” Earl walks over to where Josie was working.

Josie comes sliding out from under the patrol car she was working on. She was in the process of draining the oil. She looks up at Earl as he stood in front of her.

“Yes, so is patrol car 451 and 254 as well. All three are ready to go back out on the road.”

“It’s about time.”

“If you would recruit people who know something about cars. I wouldn’t have to go back and fixed their screw-up.” Josie hated going back and fixing other mechanics messes.
