Vesper wakes up on the third day to the sound of her tent vibrating from the wind blowing. The first two days had been a little windy, but nothing to worry about. However, sometime during early morning it started to snow again, and the wind had increased. There was a slight chill in the air. She checks the temperature inside the tent and notices it is fifty-five degrees.
She walks over to the wood stove and adds more wood to the stove. She strokes the embers inside the stove, and soon the fresh wood she added catches. She fills a kettle with water and places it on top of the wood stove to heat. She needed coffee to wake up.
While the water heated up, she grabbed the frying pan and butter. She started frying up some eggs and adding the leftover bacon from yesterday. She used the bacon fat from the bacon in the big batch of soup she made last night.
After cooking the eggs and some toast. She watches the snow coming down outside. Vesper wonders how long it is going to last. She logs onto her laptop and checks the weather report. According to the weather report, it was going to snow well until tomorrow. According to the same report, it was going to drop twelve inches of snow.
“Well, that sucks.” Vesper sends a text to Gus and her boss, letting them know she might be stuck for a few days.
After Vesper sends the texts, she downloads the photos she took and starts working on them. She figures since she can’t go out into the storm and take more pictures, she might as well do some work. She works for the next few hours editing and clearing up some of the shots she took. She loved her camera and how it managed to capture what she wanted.
Vesper drinks her coffee and works well into the afternoon. She doesn't bother to stop to fix herself any lunch. The wind blowing outside increases, and her tent shakes, but she had secured it well enough and with the Range Rover inside on it. It wasn’t going to be blown away.
Late into the evening, Vesper takes a break and notices how much snow has accumulated around her tent. She shook her head and knew if she wanted to go outside for anything, she was going to have to dig a path. She adds a few more logs to the wood stove and heats some of the soup she made last night for dinner.
Vesper plays some music from her cellphone, so it isn’t so quiet in the tent. She gets up and stretches her legs. She’s been sitting all day working on the photos, and her legs are hurting. She was so glad her tent was as big as it was. She knew folding it back up in the weather was going to be a chore. She was also glad she packed enough supplies for at least a week or more. She had emergency MREs she bought at an Army and Navy surplus store.
She tried one once and didn’t like the taste of it. But if she needed to survive on them, she was happy she brought them with her. After stretching for a while and cleaning up the mess she made. Vesper turns the lights out and enjoys the darkness. She continues to listen to the music coming from her cellphone. She had plugged it into a portable battery pack.
The next two days, Vesper goes outside and starts clearing the snow away from her tent and making a path so that when she is ready to leave, she can pull the Range Rover out of the tent. She was bundled up, so she would stay warm. The outside temperature was close to fifteen degrees, with the wind still blowing. It wasn’t blowing as badly as two days ago, but it was still strong.
She takes several small breaks, so she wouldn’t wear herself out. She drank plenty of fluids and broke into the high-energy bars she brought with her. They came in handy when she went hiking or when she worked out in the fields with Gus.
By nightfall, Vesper had cleared enough space to pull the Range Rover out of the tent and put his snow chains on. She was going to wait until morning to take her tent down. She had already packed up everything she needed to, and the only thing left was the tent. She had to let the portable wood stove cool down before she could pack that up. She also had to clean it before packing it.
She sleeps in the Range Rover for the night. When morning arrives, she gets dressed and packs the tent up. The wind had died down some, but it still made it difficult to fold and pack the tent up. She double-checks and makes sure she doesn’t leave anything behind before leaving.
The way down from where she stayed was difficult, and a few times she almost lost control of the Range Rover. When she finally got to the road, it was already cleared. She gets out, removes the snow chains from the tires, and puts them away.
Vesper stops at the local convenience store and grabs some lunch. The place sold barbecue sandwiches, fried chicken, and hot dogs. She
gets a four-piece fried chicken meal and eats it in the Range Rover before heading home. She lets Gus know she should be back at her place by midnight.
Vesper arrives home a little before one the next morning. She wasn’t going to unpack her gear in the dark. She grabs her laptop, camera, and other electronics she normally uses out in the field and heads upstairs to her apartment.
Vesper was so tired by the time she climbed the stairs and placed her equipment on the recliner. She starts taking off her ski suit and boots. By the time she was down to her underwear, she crawled into bed. She was going to sleep in.
The alarm on Vesper's cellphone goes off. She turns it off and goes back to sleep. She was worn out from camping and the nerve-racking experience of almost going over a cliff on the way down the mountain trail. She was never going to do that again.
By the time Vesper wakes up, it is four in the afternoon. She doesn’t feel like cooking anything, so she placed an order with the local sub shop to deliver two-foot-long subs and an order of onion rings. She still had some sweet, iced tea in the refrigerator, or she could make some hot tea to drink.
She takes a nice hot shower while waiting for the subs to be delivered. When she gets out of the shower, she blow-dries her hair and throws on an oversized t-shirt she found at the thrift store. She doesn’t bother with any underwear. Her penis was so tiny that the shirt covered her bottom well, and even if someone saw her bottom, they wouldn’t see her penis. That was why she had to sit down to pee.
When the delivery driver arrives with her order, Vesper pays him and gives him a twenty percent tip. She places the second sub in the refrigerator to eat tomorrow for lunch. She sits down at her desk and turns on her desktop computer.
Vesper eats her sub and onion rings while she works on the pictures she took. She transfers some of them to a thumb drive so she can take them to the print shop and have them printed out. She’ll display them for sale at the local art show and the studio down the street from the furniture store she works part-time at.
By the time Vesper starts feeling tired, it’s five in the morning. She covers up a yawn and sets her alarm to wake her by noon. She crawls back into bed and falls asleep instantly.
