Which seems like the least appropriate blog entry ever for this site, but I feel it's worth mentioning as said 'minnows' just happened to be the hometown team I've supported for decades, and who have a shot at reaching a level fo English football they haven't reached at any point during my lifetime. :-)

its
at least as appropriate as a lot of the blog entries on here.
tbh, you kind of forget that Lincoln has a football team most of the time, however i do have one anecdote from i guess 1988/9? As you may be aware, i used to race tandems, quite successfully i have to say and the courses used around Lincoln were always quite popular due to their lack of hills. One such course used the A57 from Saxilby to the ringroad, following the Roman Fossdyke (yes, a Roman canal in England still used by shipping) On this particular occasion we were racing on Saturday afternoon, the traffic was nothing like it is on that road today, but little did we know, well why would we, Lincoln Town were playing someone like Mansfield in a 'cup' match, a stream of coaches, maybe a dozen or so passed the start area.
We set off but as we approached the turn we could see the coaches being held by the police, officers stood in the road waiting to escort them to the ground. They hadn't stopped traffic, we kept going at best bit of 30mph cheered on by the waiting fans, then, ahead of us, one copper stood further out in the road. Our options were limited, go wide into the opposing lane or go for the gap between officer and coach, my pilot chose the latter, which startled all involved to say the least! We half expected to be pulled over on our return but they'd had the call to move the fans so were otherwise engaged.
Good luck to the Imps, they'll need it and a lot of cash if they do move up.

Mansfield Town fans...
Had a terrible reputation in the early eighties.
As a pre teen, allowed into town on a Saturday morning, I watched twenty or thirty Mansfield fans smash shop windows and literally kick old people to the ground.
And you try telling that to the kids of today, Obediah, and they just don't believe you.
Mind you, that was in Chessie.
"Lately it occurs to me..
what a long strange trip its been."
Mansfield are *the* rival to
Mansfield are *the* rival to the Imps still, being the closest league side geographically. Unsurprising there'd be police presence as it's usually heated even by their standards.

I once rode a 10 mile TT
... organised by Lincoln Wheelers in an attempt to break the trike record I'd established for my own club. It was pretty slow but faster than evens (circa 27 mins IIRC). The only thing I remember is that Ian Cammish (who you've probably heard of but no-one else here has - suffice to say he held a few 100 mile records) pitted next to me and he had those silly bent cranks on his bike. They were supposed to assist getting over TDC but did absolutely nothing except add a few grams in weight. I failed to improve my record :) I rode my old Higgins (1956) 2WD trike.
Only raced our tandem a few times. Best was a 55' in torrential rain on the A19 north of York on the Tandem Club 25 champs. Never enjoyed racing much. I always think it spoiled a good ride.
Those
Lincolnshire courses were either brilliant or diabolical as they were/are so open.
I used to race against Mr Cammish most weeks and even beat him in a sprint, my one and only road race win! Against the clock I couldn’t get near of course.
I used to love racing besides all the other riding I did/do, back in the last century I rode courses across the country, from Devon to Northumberland, Kent to Cheshire and I’ve even done a few in Germany. those T courses north of York were pretty quick despite or perhaps because of, the rolling nature of the A1 and A19. I used to love riding tandems, I’m considering getting one to ride with my kiddlings, never took to barrows, too much like hard work lol.
Of course, I’m third generation at cycling, my grandfather rode from the 1920’s, both my parents, several aunts, uncles - even my brother had a dabble. Out of them all I’ve been the most successful at racing and the most widely travelled by bike. Then there’s my daughter who can just about ride but the GS is quite keen but he’s only 7!

Barrows ...
... may be hard work but they're great for riding on ice, especially my 2wd one, which has better traction if it's slippery. I used it for my daily 26 mile round trip to work in winter. They can be excellent treatment for constipation if you try to corner too hard. Someone I know has ridden about 4 (or more) Paris-Brest-Paris rides on one and I fed him on a 24hr TT a long time ago.
