In _Who Goes There?_ the John
In _Who Goes There?_ the John W. Campbell story which inspired both _The Thing From Another World_ and _The Thing_ one character dismisses the idea of catching a disease from the frozen alien by pointing out that humans didn't get wheat rust (a disease of the wheat plant) so how could they catch something from a creature which was a product of a separate chain of evolution?
