It seems to me, that if comments are turned off then kudos should also be turned off at the same time. If they don't want reader feedback, then they should get none.

Don't we want to encourage people to write? Some authors, particularly new ones, can be sensitive to bad or critical comments. You can always PM them.
A kudos is a form of approval which you don't have to leave if you don't want to.
Don't cause Erin and Piper more work
As far as I know it's not technically possible to switch off Kudos at present. I see no reason to cause extra work for Erin and Piper.
As very few stories have comments blocked I don't see this as a big issue and as mentioned there is still messaging.
There may also be many reasons for blocking comments other than not wanting feed-back.
In one case I know the poster posted a story with content they knew could cause a public flaming political controversy and in deference to Erin wanted to avoid that. The discussion was held by messaging which kept emotions at a lower level.
What a fine welcome to prospective new writers.
Seems to me pointless and spiteful comments should remain inside a persons head no matter how lonely they were.
Just as everyone has the right to voice opinions everyone has the right not to hear them.

Constructive comments should always be welcome,
but all our authors, particularly new ones, need encouragement and support. If there are serious arguments that need to take place they should be done by private DM messages, not as an open-forum comment, putting people down. Remember the rule ' Keep it friendly'.

Sticking one's oar in
I know of two authors who stopped working on stories because of unhelpful comments. Note that I am NOT saying negative comments. The comments were from backseat drivers who wanted to change the direction of a story. There are people who aren't happy if they can't stick an oar in.
The idea of turning off comments is not without its appeal. I've gotten some comments that still bug me. And as I said, they weren't negative. The comments were arguments about unimportant details, obsessive insisting that things be changed, incredible misunderstandings based on misreading...
I can well understand an author who wants to offer their work, but doesn't want to step into an arena.
When I was teaching my daughter to drive, someone came up on our tail and started honking mercilessly. It was hard to convince her that the person honking was the one with the problem.

I think these authors garnering kudos without giving us a chance to leave snarky comments
on their stories is one of those cruel injustices we'll just have to learn to live with somehow.
Unless Erin decides to add a FUCK YOU! button next to the Kudos one...
