A long time ago, a meteor struck a small farming community called Normal. It started a fire, and the townspeople mustered their resources and put it out. As far as anybody outside Normal knows, that is all that happened.

But some people developed strange abilities, and over time, more people developed abilities. When word leaked out, Normal was flooded by people who came in hopes of getting super powers. But it doesn't just work that way; people don't automatically get powers when they arrive in Normal. Some of them left, disappointed, but they told others about what they saw there.

Eventually, the group of the town's founders who initially got powers, Nicholas, Anne, Norman, and Abigail, decided to put a stop to this. After a mass-forgetting spell was cast, only the people in Normal at the time of casting would know about the powers. Them, and the people who got powers afterward, and newer town residents from whom the powers could not be hidden.

Officially, the group became known as NANA, the Normal Always Normal Association, sponsors of various activities to promote the town’s wellbeing. Secretly, they formed a network to call on one another for help against any supernatural threats to the town, as it grew well beyond its farming roots into a city like any other, or at least they hoped it looked like any other. Those whose powers could be used to make extra money donated it to the group to help those whose powers caused them hardship, or were difficult to hide. Those who couldn’t do so found other ways to help protect the secret and those affected by it.
