What Was She Doing?
There's Amber dressed to kill in the middle of the night trying to get into Max's house. What was she up to?
Amber on the prowl
I actually deleted a line where Lorelei realizes that Amber is there with the intention of seducing Max. I don't know why, but I felt like it didn't fit.

Love, love, love, looove this!
OK, so kissing an unconsious Max was a tad creepy (imagine if we didn't know they both want it or if we knew Max DIDN'T want it). But the whole scene was still very sexy and absolutely hilarious. This was, however, not how I expected Amber to "attack" and, it would seem her stalking failed to note that Lorelei never left. She's slipping.
I had fallen behind on my reading, so I'll add a thought I had for the last two chapters. If I was right about the 'P' gift being pearls, I'd like to share my imagined vignette:
Lorelei fingered the strand of pearls as soon as they settled against her bare skin just above her dress's collar. They were cool against her skin but felt so smooth in her fingertips it felt like they held an inner warmth. Max was still behind her from fastening the clasp and she felt his breath against an area of her neck that was suddenly the most erogenous spot on her body. She shivered visibly and stepped away to turn and look up at him.
Max smilled lazily down at her.
Did I read somewhere that it was unlucky to accept pearls that were meant for somene else? Lorelei smiled at Max and lifted the pearls slightly. "Thank you, they're lovely." she said. Doesn't matter, I really believe he wants me to have them more anyway.
"For a lovely lady," he said with a lopsided grin.
"God, that's so corny," she laughed. "But I do like them. Thank you for giving me my very first pearl necklace."
"The first of many, I hope," said Max.
Suddenly both realized the possible secondary meaning of their pronouncements and blushed furiously.

Anyways, that was my fun little fantasy. Love this - lots of hugs Io!
So close...
You'll laugh (I think) when you see what the P present is, but you are right on the money regarding the weirdness of accepting presents meant for someone else.
And yes, she did missing Lorelei's going inside.
thanks,

So…
All right, Io.
When’s the film coming out?
Terrific chapter. Thrilling and laugh out loud funny in equal measure.
Just great.

Thanks once again
I appreciate the comments. I'm hoping that this will be the tone from here on out.

In the immortal words of Rudy Clark (and Bobby Darin)
When they finally get around to "doing it," you might consider the following epigraph from the pens of Rudy Clark and Bobby Darin:
"Do the Monkey"
Monkey, do the monkey
Do the monkey, do
Monkey, do the monkey
Do the monkey, do
You monkey with me
I'll monkey with you
Monkey, do the monkey
Hugs,
Sammy
Can't Understand...
...why Lorelei would tell Kass that she'd completed the check of the basement at a point where she hadn't done so. And later, I'm not sure why she wouldn't tell Kass about the unlocked outside door, so Kass would know that her concerns were justified.
(I think our protagonist was stupid not to check the upstairs floors, once she determined that someone -- even Amber, since she hadn't turned up on the doorstep yet -- could have been lying in wait up there. Someone still may be, for that matter. But Lorelei's distraction on that was understandable; it's the earlier ones that don't make sense to me.)

Good points
You're right -- Lorelei could easily be making two stupid choices there, but I do have a theory or feeling about what she did.
Parenthetically, she *did* tell Kass that the door was unlocked, and that the switch in the doorknob was pointing up and down -- which *does* mean unlocked. You're correct in any case, because she didn't confirm it after checking outside. Kass didn't ask her, though.
My feeling about it is this:
* Neither Kass nor Lorelei believe someone's in the house. If they did, they would have called the police right at the start. They're just being careful.
* Lorelei told Kass that she was done checking because she wanted to let Kass off the hook, and this is related to the remaining reasons:
* In Lorelei's mind, the only enemy is Amber. For Lorelei, the unlocked door represents Amber's secret entrance.
* Lorelei doesn't want to get into a conversation about Amber at that moment
* The only place Lorelei doesn't check is the second floor, but she was distracted by her attentions to Max
But, yes, it all could have gone tragically wrong.
I could tell a hair-raising story about a friend who was woken in the night by a noise that sounded like an intruder, but he fell back asleep while debating whether to get up and check the house. The hair-raising part has to do with a big kitchen knife, but even then, there was no intruder.

Birth Control
Hi Io,
This has been wonderful writing making the suspense last. Lorelei almost got trapped twice in the same night but she can get out of the relationship at any time by the use of magic. I can just sense Max thinking that he has to be careful because Lorelei could leave him like all the other women in his life starting with Amber. We get to see if Max remembers any of this encounter with Lorelei in the morning. I love it that Lorelei get's to frustrate Amber's plans once again. I can't wait till your next chapter is revealed. More, please!

2x4 and duct tape?
What Lorelei is experiencing as a woman with Max is new and without buffers built in. Without previous experiences to tell her how to handle the feelings that came to life when she kissed Max, then she and Max were kissing. Then when her motor started.
Lorelei may want Max, but halting things before they went farther was the right decision. Reversing her change still is possible, if she wants.
What does it take to get through to Amber, a 2x4 and duct tape? The 2x4 to get her undivided attention, and the duct tape to cocoon her, then suspend her upside down over a gator infested lagoon. Maybe then she'd get the message to go away.
One thing for sure, her sneaky house entrance has been closed. And hopefully she hasn't any other ways to get into Max's home, short of breaking in.
Others have feelings too.
