Sadly Kyle was right in a way
.In less than a day, I would never feel that pain again.
Disposal would have that effect as well.
Good but sad story.
Indeed.
The sadness is part of the reason I didn't bring this over to BCTS back when I initially wrote it, but left it on the Patreon: it's not a particularly uplifting story, but I do feel that I wrote it fairly well.
Also, all credit to Erin for her amazing work on setting up the splash image for it.

Good science fiction
Not just a good trans story but a very fine story.
Hugs,
Erin

Kyle "DIES"?
Missed that first time around. Sad. :-(
Is this a kinder, gentler Blade Runner? Does the #16 look like Sean Young?

Read it
more like Dee-Ezz As in Ten. Though, yes, the double-reading is intentional.

Excellent
The writing is excellent and the story poignant. Grim, but . . . if we don't contemplate the bad places tech might take us, we'll just get there faster.
Big hug, Melanie!

Thank you!
Tech can be scary, but it can also do a lot of good, too, and much as people like to doomsay everything that comes along... the world wouldn't have all the good it does if we didn't push forward.
There are plenty of ethical concerns in the future for tech, but the problem isn't in the technology itself: it's in the way that we, as people, choose to use (and abuse) it.

Like tears...
... in the rain?
You got it.
I'd originally used that whole phrase, but Erin suggested shortening it so it's less obvious, and I took her advice.

Efficiencies
Sad that swapping the processor core to the right body was deemed less efficient than disposal, as with such a mental history the productive output (as it were) could be enhanced by valuing the 'new' form all the more.
Good story, and probably has a few of us grumbling (if not outright cursing) the lazy developers behind our own brain pans...
Planned Obsolescence
Why repair something you intend to be discarded anyway?
Melanie E.
I'm surprised I didn't see that coming
the title alone should have been a clue.
well written even if sad.
I added the caution notes,
but wasn't sure how i could make them more relevant without giving away the game.

Confusion
>Some day she hoped the labor units would be given awareness too.
In my understanding Kyle Dies is a labor unit and clearly has awareness.
Thx for a nice but sad story^^
To an extent.
The labor units are designed not to know they're robots.
Think certain synths in Bladerunner, or, if you've ever seen it, the film Moon with Sam Rockwell (a good film, worth a look.)
Melanie E.
Ah, I'd call that "True Self
Ah, I'd call that "True Self Understanding" or "Complete Self Understanding".
Yeah, I saw Blade Runner. Both of them.
Moon didn't make it to the cinemas where I live. :-(
Moon
Is an awesome movie. It is virtually a Sam Rockwell one-man show. So we'll done.

"Will Be Lost In Time"
"Like tears in rain". Rutger Hauer's best acting moment.
Truly memorable.

Humans in this world
Are pretty cold. To grant something sentience and then make it a slave ought to be illegal.
Historically it hasn't been
even when that thing was another human, though I fully agree with you.
