its been nearly a decade since writing and posting on here. the community is very different. do readers prefer short serial type posts for stories, or 74 page/30,000 word stories?

I prefer shorter chapters, but you write how you want to. It will be a pleasure to see you return.

While she prefers to read shorter chapters, I prefer to read in the 15 to 20K word range and will happily read 30K.
When I write, my stories run from 17 to 20K and change, and I post them in a single post. If I should happen go over 30K I'll break it into chapters of about 1500 to 2000 word and post 2 chapters at a time.
I'm sure that there some who give my stories a pass because of the length, but there are plenty who read them.
So write and post to suit yourself.

Length of stories
I prefer to both write, and read something that is in the 50,000-100,000 words in length. It takes me perhaps three months to write, but the readership on this site drops when I do that. I limit myself to about 10,000-12,000 words now and readers seem to enjoy that even though I have to skimp on character development. What I don't really like is the television soap opera format where the characters appear again and again, marry three times, are convicted of murder, and die several times over several decades, and never seem to age!
Will be glad to see another contributor.
My personal view
One of the things I like abut BCTS is the variety. Themes, format, styles. Whatever (almost) you are looking for you can find if you search around a little.
Having said that I'd go with those who say that you should do what feels best for you, unless you specifically want to please an optimal number of readers.
