Sophie Wilson
Sophie was born in Leeds, England, in 1957.She studied computer science at the University of Cambridge. She worked at Acorn Computers in the 1980s.
She designed the original instruction set for the ARM chip in just a few days.. ARM stands for Acorn RISC Machine. The design uses very little power and runs very fast
Billions of devices use ARM processors.. Most smartphones and tablets rely on her chip design. Routers, gaming consoles, and smart devices also use ARM
Without her, so much of todays tech would not be possible.

There was a Docudrama about the battle between Clive Sinclair and Acorn computers in the 80's She played a huge part in designing the BBC Micro computer. An actor plays Sophie (Roger then) Wilson, Although, Sophie did appear at the end as a a barmaid at 1:19:55 in the drama.

Í'm a great fan ...
... of the BBC Micro. It was my second home computer (the first was a copy of of the TRS80 called a Video Genie) and I was very impressed with its architecture. I built a second processor board using a Motorola 6809 running an OS called Flex which we used at work and enabled me to write S/W at home. I'm doubly impressed because I'm very much not a fan of Clive Sinclair for a wealth of reasons.
I regret to confess that I've never heard of Sophie Wilson but I'll certainly follow up the links you've provided and correct that. I'm long retired and extremely rusty technically but my first involvement with computers was back in 1961 (I was 21) when I had to 'Google' the local library to find out just what they were before my interview, so a little more background into how we ended where we are now is welcome in my dotage.

The 80's were "peak computer" A new system coming out every few months. I was an avid Sinclair fan, I had the ZX81 then the Spectrum. This was due to cost. In the docudrama it shows that he hated the fact that his machine was mainly used for games. Is showed Chris Curry of Acorn who used to work for him was unhappy that there were not that many for the BBC. It really is worth a watch.
Sinclairs obsession with his electric car broke the company. The pity is, if the Sinclair c5 was a scooter or a bike it would have been a success I remember it's launch and it was only a few days in when someone pointed out that it was so low to the ground that you were invisible to HGV;s, The solution was to put a huge 6ft aerial on the back with a flag. He had the right idea, as electric bikes have been big in the last 10 years.
When he left computing, he was still obsessed and developed a kit that converted a standard push bike to electric. He doesn't come over as a nice person though.
Sophie Wilson's impact on modern systems was huge. Just Google her or seach on Youtube.

I used to ride a racing trike ...
... mostly in winter for commuting when it was icy/snowy and was hoping to meet a Sinclair C5 so I could pass it on pedal power alone on a 1956 Higgins :) Someone used one for a couple of weeks to commute to work but not on my route.
My main grouse with Sinclair were his exaggerated claims for his non-computer products like the class D amplifier, as well as all his other so-called HiFi products, the digital watch etc. He was mainly a con-man, I'm afraid.

That's brilliant Piper! I have watched a lot of interviews with Sophie Wilson, they are all about her work, not about her transition. That alone shows that she is held in awe of her contribution to computing, not her personal life.

Thanks for bringing this to people's attention. The woman who designed the Acorn BBC Micro (my first computer...) , and was lumped with creating BBC Basic to work on it too. Oh yeah, and created the chip archicture in all our phones. And beat that t****er Clive Sinclair, he of the C5 fame.Talking 'bout my generation (ish).

I get the impression Sinclair never knew much about computers. He made his money to found Sinclair research by selling radio kits and digital watches . His stuff had a cool look to it but was often flawed. He had some good ideas though. The ZX Spectrum started so many careers in computing in the UK. Not because it was a good machine, it was very affordable. It's main rival the C64 was better speced, but programmers squeezed everything out of the Spectrum . When you see some of the games today. This was a 48k machine. Even a cheap smart watch today has hundreds of times more power.
