For us Reel-Amerikans, think 4th of July fireworks but no bang.... pity
The plan was sure BIG in its intent
I mean, Parliament's basement filled with barrels of gunpowder
Ironically if Fawkes waited a few centuries Parliament would burn down on its own
So have a fun night but celebrate responsibly

Traditions
vary around the country for whose effigy is burnt on the bonfire this night. At my grandmothers place, the figure was Oliver Cromwell. I saw some clips of one processions where multiple 'donald trumps' were heading for the fire.
It is a way of expressing frustration over those in power which was what the plotters all those years ago wanted to do by blowing up parliament.
Long may this continue.

Effigies
One of the better known bonfire events is at Lewes in Sussex, and each year they have a dig, as Samantha describes. This year's effigies included Nigel Farage, a man with his... bodily part, orifice, Mango Mussolini; construct your own revolting image of toadying. It was a deliberate choice to give the villain in my 'Black and White' story arc the same initials and first name. Also shown was another sycophant to Agent Orange, Gianni Infantino of FIFA, and Paula Vennells, the head of the Post Office when a large number of subpostmasters were wrongly prosecuted for theft due to a malfunctioning computer programme, resulting in bankruptcies, jail terms and suicides as she refused to review the facts.

Podcast about The Gunpowder Plot
The Podcast Queens, Kings & Dastardly Things posted a very interesting and informative about The Gunpowder Plot this week.
The hosts are very good storytellers, on top of being serious and well respected historians, journalists and biographers. And despite the seriousness of their topics, the podcasts are also well seasoned with that typical dry British humor.
