Taylor’s Farm:
Carrot stands up from picking cabbage and looks towards the other people picking near her. She still had three-quarters of a row she chose to harvest. The vegetable patch she had agreed to work was rather large. Her straw hat kept the sun from giving her a headache.
Carrot picked up her thermos and drank some cold water. She loved vegetables, and the farm was hiring pickers. She spoke with her mother and got permission to work for the farm.
She went back to picking and doubled her efforts. She had a quota she needed to meet today, and she was behind by four baskets. By the time the field supervisor told everyone to break for lunch, she made up the missing baskets and was one ahead.
Carrot went and grabbed her lunch from her scooter and sat down next to Casey. Casey was a female humanoid Lemur. Sitting across from them was Big Tony. He was a humanoid male coyote person. At least four of them lived in town.
“What you bring with you today, rabbit?” Tony looked at Carrot with a smirk on his face.
“Mmmm? I think my mother made me a fried baloney sandwich with lettuce, tomato, covered in spicy mustard.” Carrot loved cooked baloney sandwiches.
Casey could smell the sandwich as Carrot unwrapped it. Her mouth started to water from just the smell alone. “You got my mouth watering, Carrot.”
“Sorry, my mothers know I love fried baloney sandwiches.” Carrot takes a bite from her sandwich.
Carrot shares some of her carrot cake with Casey and Tony. Her mother made it for her the other night and gave her a large slice to take to work. Since the baloney sandwich and small salad filled her up, she ate a small slice. She took only a small slice of the cake and shared the rest.
“Thanks.” Casey loved homemade food.
Carrot notices Tony eating a huge Dagwood sandwich, with lots and lots of meat and some veggies on it. She could smell the different dressings and spices on the sandwich. She shakes her head as she watches Tony devour the sandwich in two bites.
“Dang! Tony. You inhaled that sandwich, like it was a snack.” Casey couldn’t believe how fast Tony devoured that sandwich.
Tony lets out a burp as a playful smile appears on his dog-like face. He loved shocking people like Carrot and Casey.
“That was a small sandwich for me. Wait until tomorrow when I bring in the Stackhouse for lunch.” A lustful look appears on Tony’s face.
The field supervisor informs them that lunch break is over. Casey, Carrot, and Tony clean up their mess. Carrot puts her lunch box back on her scooter and goes back to work. She listened to music while she worked.
By the time the field supervisor called it quits, she had met her quota with ten baskets to spare. She refills her thermos before leaving the farm. The well water tasted nice and refreshing. She doesn’t know what was in the ground, but the water was better than what she got at home.
Carrot rides her scooter back to the house. She waves to some of the people she has met while looking for work or just out and about. She loved exploring the new town she and her mothers were living in.
By the time she arrived home, one of her mothers was already there. Carrot parks her scooter in the garage and hangs her helmet up on one of the wooden pegs mounted on the wall. Just as Carrot enters the house, “Mom, I’m home.”
“Okay, sweetie,” Emily answers back from upstairs.
Carrot walks upstairs and peeks into her mother’s bedroom. She spots her mother, Emily, changing out of her work clothes and into her comfy
clothes. She knows her mother enjoys getting out of her work clothes. She knocks on the doorframe before entering the room.
“Hi, Mom.” Rabbit sits on the corner of the bed.
“Hey, sweetie. How was work today?” Emily didn’t mind Carrot coming into the bedroom while she was naked or in her underwear.
“Busy. The field should be cleared in the next few days, before we move to another field.” Carrot knew they still had three more fields to do.
“Do you think Mr. Taylor will allow you to bring home some of the veggies?”
“Yes, ma’am. He said he always has extra left over, and we are welcome to take as much as we like. I’m going to need to hook the trailer up to
my scooter so that I can fill it on payday.” Carrot planned to load up on fresh veggies for the house. She knew her mother loved fresh veggies, especially if they were picked from the garden.
“Okay, just be careful, sweetie.” Emily knew Carrot was still getting used to the trailer for her scooter.
“So, did anything unusual happen today, Carrot?” Emily looked at her daughter as she removed her makeup.
“Nope, everything was normal and back-breaking. Do you know pulling heads of cabbage from the ground is hard work?” Carrot had to get used to bending over a lot.
“Now you see why Mr. Taylor pays everyone a good, decent wage and gives you all the extra veggies you can carry.” Emily heard that Mr. Taylor was a good guy to work for. Sure, the work was back-breaking and sometimes hard because you were outside in the heat. However, he looked after his pickers and made sure they had plenty of water and places to take shelter.
Over the next few days, Carrot and the other pickers were busy. They finished the cabbage patches and moved on to tomatoes and potatoes. Carrot had been asked if she wanted to work the carrot patch, but she refused.
By Friday, Carrot got her first paycheck and all the veggies she could carry. She filled her trailer up with baskets of veggies from Mr. Taylor’s farm. She even bought some fresh eggs from Mr. Taylor. She bought two dozen duck eggs for her mother to use in their baking.
According to Debbie, duck eggs were great for baked goods. She also bought some mushrooms. Mr. Taylor’s wife grew their own mushrooms.
After Carrot loads up the trailer, she heads home with her goodies.
