If you've not heard of them, the Spiral Scouts are an inclusive organization.
An answer to those that Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts won't let in.
No religious discrimination - so not believing in the Christian god doesn't disqualify you (atheist and pagan are not allowed in the BSoA).
No sexual orientation discrimination - gay, lesbian, heterosexual, bisexual and asexual are all equally accepted.
No gender discrimination - there are male, female, intersex, and transgender members both as scouts and the adults helping support the organization.

Sadly...
... The wording of the firefly promise will likely cause such an organization to be unacceptable to many christians (not all by any means) or others as well.
An Inclusive organization like this is something that IS needed for many of our youth.

While I don't see anything particularly objectionable in these oaths, I'm well aware that my Christian beliefs do not mesh well with many of the conventional organized religions. I was a scout a long time ago, and this alternative take on scouting is interesting to read.

What troop, Karen?
I can see the diffculties.
I had to fudge the religous requirement to get my Eagle Scout, not being a member of any organized religion. I will give our troop credit, they made a point of going to a wide variety of churches on Sunday mornings when we were on a campout. They were all Christian denomination and mostly mainstream, but the Unitarians were fun and the Catholic churches were a hoot as the Catholics in our troop *interpreted* what was going on and basically blasphemed like hell. You got a real work out with all that up/down stuff and they had this neat padded footrest ... they served a snack partway though the service, how considerate!
A real pity a narrow vision seems to persist in some of the leadership of Scouting, or so it is perceived. In many ways the values they taught are universal and it was a great way to socialize in a more constructive environment, for the most part.

Boy or Girl Scouts?
The one I enjoyed the most was the Senior Girl Scout troop I was affiliated with in high school one year. The troop specialty was sailing, and they owned a couple of small two person sailboats. Had a lot of fun with those!

Sounds like a fun group
I was in the Boy Scouts. I sailed a little in the Y and S outs and it was fun.
Girl Scouts always worried me, I mean they got merit badges for everything. There was an Explorer troup -- coed --in our area with sailing cannoes -- collapsable FoilBoats, but they folded by the time I was old enough. The only Explorer groups around by then were all tied into law enforcement and such.

This afternoon,
I stood on the spot where the boy scouts were founded in 1907. I went to Brownsea Island, which is in Poole harbour. A delightful place, spent much of my time there birdwatching and counting red squirrels (in case Cathy needs to know).
