That was not unusual.

Chris was usually there before almost everyone, sitting on the wooden bench outside the library with a backpack tucked close beside one foot. Teachers passed with coffee cups and key rings. The custodian pushed a cart down the hallway. Students came in laughing, yawning, arguing, complaining about homework, and never wondered why Chris always seemed to be waiting before the day had even begun.

And just to add a bit more uniqueness, the start of each novel involves a pinch of fantasy, so that the ordinary becomes extraordinary. The main story is the mystery solved by a transgendered protagonist, but the fantasy is in the background so that the unexpected can happen at any time. And as they say in the mystery classics, "The game's afoot." And so it begins.
