It's pretty close to Alena's costume, a popular one in the GLC. Oh, and don't worry about Kyle just yet. He's going on a diplomatic mission to another planet. It would be the other GL that you have to worry about, if he shows up that is. He doesn't have a clue as to what's going on.

This is a very good chapter.

Just one question. I thought Kyle Rayner was still just a comic book writer in your CRU? Unless, this is just a temporal issue, where the GL Kyle Rayner is from the future.

Anyway, it interesting that Jade's ring has become sentient. And Sora is really giving Jade a hard time.

And nice Star Wars injokes.

Well, Kyle was already shown as just a comic book 'artist' in the stories, "Green with Envy" (later chapters dealing with convention), and "Lee Stone Presents". And at one point he accidentally angered the Spectre.

From this story, it sounds like Kyle has been gone from Earth since before Hal died.

As I always understood that there was only one Green Lantern on Earth at a time, are we dealing with Alternate universe Green Lanterns in the form of Kyle Rayner and John Stewart? This is another great story, Lilith, thank you for it.

Canon Green Lantern have four from 2814. Hal, Kyle, Guy and John. Guy is pretty much on Oa full time now. The rest still call Earth home. Additionally, it's not that there's one for Earth, but 4 for 2814 which contains boatloads of planets.

Ring deactivation

I imagine it will take a while before the existing rings can be deactivated, as it's not just an issue of fabrics that can adapt to whatever size the wearer is; there's also the issues of secure communication (present earth comms aren't discrete or long range enough) and additional ring functions (e.g. range finding). And on the costume front, the rings also allow quick changes - the heroines haven't got to either (a) wear their supersuit under their regular clothes or (b) carry it around with them, just in case they're called on a mission. In the case of one in particular, imagine wearing a swimming costume under your clothes all day, every day - yuck!

The Lanterns' preferred solution is to establish intergalactic trading, but that's going to be a bit difficult considering Earth doesn't have any long range spacecraft, so it would be virtually impossible for Earth merchants to visit trading posts. Besides which, I'd imagine many textile manufacturers wouldn't be too happy at the concept of a 'one size fits all' fabric.

I suspect, as with the initial deactivation command, that the rest of the Lanterns operate on what's best for the GLC, rather than what's best for individuals / the planets they look after. Let's face it, although the lesser GL rings contain advanced technology, I'd imagine they're 'keyed' to their owner, so are virtually impossible to use for nefarious purposes.

Meanwhile, if the Metas on Earth and the perceived abuse of the technology wasn't going to cause enough headaches for the GLC, there's also the issue of Alena. After all, the Star Heart was supposedly locked away by the GLC - so someone on the loose with its powers (which are similar to that provided by a full GL power ring) who isn't officially connected to the GLC could definitely be an interesting problem for them :)

I'd like to go through and explain most of what I have planned with these things, but that would give away the plot. Just something to keep in mind: read Out of the Ashes 2 and look for clues in there. Remember this story is a year after Jade first start out. That would make it October'ish. OOTA2 is in December.

At this time, Alena is in no danger. Kyle is off to start his negotiations, so Jade has some time. We just have to keep an eye out for John.

He'll arrive and presumably think he should be in charge of the Metas. No doubt the Metas will have other ideas, particularly if he has a significantly different management style to Jade :) It'll be interesting to see whether they eventually overcome their teething problems and work together, or if they just (barely) tolerate each other.

Still, in the trial, with a bit of luck Jade's AI should be able to be a useful defence ally - after all, she presumably needed its cooperation to create the Lesser Rings in the first place. And she / it can always point out that the rings are limited in functionality (no combat facilities whatsoever) and are probably keyed to their wearer, so wearers (a) don't know how they work, and (b) even if they had astounding IQ, couldn't replicate the tech.

No doubt all will be explained in future episodes :)

Actually, in one of the stories, Jade had her ring look up U.S. law on Terra's behalf, to protect Terra from being sued for emulating a comic book character.

I am sure that Jade would be able to do the same in this story, dealing with GL law, if the Guardians allowed it.

EOF got an early look at this last month or the month before when it was first written but not polished. Yes, it's been that long since I wrote it. See, I try to get a lot written before it's released so I try not to disappoint.

I wonder how Alena (Zwei) plays into this... After-all, the other Lantern's are going to want to destroy/imprison the Star Heart, aren't they? Is this how Jade is initially in trouble with the Corps?

Vengeance??? Is this somehow tied to Misty's story?

The intersex thing with the ring. Does it have to do with the current malfunctions/reprogramming? (Hal did this, didn't he...) After all, Kyle, John and Hal don't seem to have that issue (at least not publicly so far).

Hmmm... and this is a year after first emergence... which means EOF's Blue Beetle (of the Reach) will have been around for 6 to 9 months... and the Reach and the Lanterns do NOT get along. So I see Kyle and John giving Jaime a bit a trouble. ;)

One thing that I don't think

One thing that I don't think anyone (or very few people) have noticed is that I don't use other people's characters. Or if I do, it's very very brief. I have a gigantic fear of messing with people's future plot lines, so i just don't do it, and save myself the stress. The other authors and I chat about future plots and try to stay synced up so we don't step on each others toes, so BB, Megan, and Alena have nothing to fear from me.

Vengeance: has to do with something that hasn't been presented yet in this story. (Future chapter)

The TG thing with the Corps/Ring. That is an exclusive trait that is found only in humans. Human GL's are often, but not always TG because they have the more to fear than the average person and those that conquer their fears are the in high demand with the GL's. Regarding Hal and the Ring, I'm not saying at this point. But it's hinted at in future chapters. But I will say that there is at least one other GL from Earth that is TG and one that is not. That leaves one in question.

Oh, I almost forgot. Jade's in trouble for giving advanced tech to an underdeveloped world, but it's not a high crime or anything. Still there has to be a hearing(trial) to figure out her punishment.

Just the ring made my day in this story. The rest is quite nice too. I love it all.

I have to wonder if the AI from the Blue Beetle story somehow mixed with the ring. Or maybe the AI started from the ring and became the AI in the Blue Beetle story. Either way, it's great.

The AI in the Blue Beetle story is the Future Brother Eye...he appeared in Maid Joy's Catwoman chapter Sandy Claws---which actually takes place much later in the grand scheme of things. The Future Brother Eye won't make a reappearance until my Blue Beetle sequel...so I don't think the two of them are connected in any way.

I'll explain some more about him as soon as I get around to things...I have a couple of stories I need to finish before I get there... :)

That would be a crossover event of massive proportions. Everyone would have to come out of the woodwork to fight Kyle and John, even then it wouldn't be fair to the metas. A heavily trained GL (contrary to the earlier comic bad-guy of the month) would wipe the floor with most of them. There are a few, Phoenix, Miss Mars, Thor-Girl, would be able to put up a good fight. Specter could do some damage, but that's not her game.

I just think about Parallax or Ion when I remember about how much damage a GL can do, but they were boosted up with power.

The explanation about Hal/Ring/Sentience plot answer is far off. I do tease it all over the place though. ;)

Once BB figured out all the neat things she can do with her scarab, probably... and it would be several months after she got it. But right now Cassie is land bound. She has the same problem Dream does.

"If I can get my hands on you, you're toast! Come'ere dammit!"

Then again, as long as the ring is charged they have to get through the shield. Defeating the GL would be more a fight of intelligence and strategy and less brawling. John Stewart moved an entire planet with his ring and his will alone. That's some serious power.

Another reason I'm having the majority of this story take place off of Earth.

You're right...I forgot how powerful John is. It would be an interesting little skirmish. I think the Metas could hold their own for a while before he gave them all the smack down :)

We have Earth's Green Lantern's ring acting completely independent. It defies or at least refuses to comply with other sanctioned Green Lanterns and even it's *owner* at times. The ship also refuses to comply, goes so far as to shoot at a Lantern in a non lethal but painful level then threaten the use of lethal force. Hal Jorden chose to be buried, location unknown on Earth.

Did Hal reprogram the ring? He was a candidate to lead the entire Green lantern Corps at one time. Was the ring so influenced by him it chose to become independent in his honor OR is part or all of the spirit/soul/mind of Lantern Jordan IN the ring. Green Lantern Zwei studying the *ring manual* Green Lantern 's ring gave her learned the rings have a mini environment inside that a lantern can retreat to in extreme emergencies and survive indefinitely. Could a lantern knowing they were dying store a copy or their actual consciousness in the ring at the moment of death?

Oh, will Green Lantern ever complete her transition to female? The ring supposedly with sufficient info can do it, IE make her completely female in every respect down to being fertile as a woman. Will she tell her meta friends the truth about her/his self..

The Lanterns and our heroine did not mention Olivia Queen, AKA The Green Arrow. Does she come into play? And we have the other Blue Beetle about to take over a young boy. Will that be *in play?*

Fun to speculate.

BTW any new stuff from your magic universe. IE Ares Bane and company?

I'm starting to see one of the common pitfalls of literalism and computer logic. The Earth people have deliberately introduced tautologies and paradoxes into the ring's goal orientation and logic. As long as it believies it's acting in the best interests of its primary goal (the preservation of life, amirite? (too lazy to check)), it can do anything, based on extemporaneous need and utilitarian planning.

You are correct in your observations. In canon GL all of these things exist, but I'm not going to go that far. The ring became one of the biggest Deus ex machina's in that particular comic. They'd set up an impossible situations, back Hal into a corner, and then pull out "Ring Save # 4982". I think that's about the time i stopped reading them and it was only recently that I got back into it.

But you've got some really good deductions running here with sound evidence to support it. I'm not saying if it's right, of course. ;)

And as stated above, I do not use other people's CRU characters. I try to keep them in mind when I write, but I don't involve them in my story unless it is in passing, much like I did when Jade "Contacted Megan, Alena, etc. "

The rings AI

I love the rings self-awareness also. To me, and not speaking of offical Canon, the ring seems to have determined that there were to many rules to follow for each race. Each race is different in how they are to be treated, they are not all the same. By using self-awareness the ring is determining the best course of action for planet Earth. Mega-humans could upset the balance in this quandrent and in my opion refused to accept the current ring bearers refusal. Work with the ring and the ring will work with her.

Now onto the other chapters.

You do have some genius level heroes already...

Giganta and her girlfriend, Lena, are both geniuses. Lena has actually been studying the software of the Jade's power ring, with some progress.

It would be funny if these two geniuses beat John.

John would never live it down by being beaten by someone whose only major superpowers, besides her brain, were to grow bigger, get tougher, and get stronger.

Sort of like when Batman decked Guy Gardener. Guy never lived it down.

Does Tekik from the Villians story play in here in any way, after all he is out there destroying worlds in this sector. And then there is the questions that you have given us in this chapter with what is going on with the ring. Hal must have done something to cause the AI to be so independent, I just wonder why it waited so long to show this hand. Looking forward to the next chapters to see how you play this out. And what is waiting on Oa when they arrive? Such fun questions that I await the answers to.

I was re-reading the various retcon stories, seeing if I'd missed anything. (I've enjoyed all of them except the green goblin one - just not my cup-o-tea) Well, I saw this one, and read it.

It wasn't until _four hours later_ that I realised that it had been posted today. I figured I'd just overlooked it.

My first experience of Green Lantern in the 80's was with the Corps rather than Hal, so I always enjoy seeing them and the chance for Jade to introduce us to them on Oa is something I'm looking forward too. :-)
