Don't worry...
Write what you want to write. There is no Law or Rule that says you have to write short stories first. If you've got that long story in your head, write it.

Then again everybody has...
...personal perception of long vs short. For some authors "long" is anything longer than 2000 words. And some authors (or so it seems) consider anything shorter than 20000 words as a drabble :-)
I have felt the same way
I have several ideas for stories that I don't feel I have the skill or practice needed to do them right. It is okay to set a big, complicated idea aside for a while in order to practice with simpler stories. If you don't feel like you are ready to tackle your big idea, start by writing stories around that idea. If your idea is centered around a world, write a short story within it where the characters aren't faced with it all at once. If it is centered around several characters, write about one or two at a time in stories where they have to figure things out about themselves.
The most important thing is to have fun with it so try and find your own approach.

Find an Editor
The first story I ever wrote was long. I just enjoyed being able to write a story. It wasn't very good, but so what, I had fun writing it. As a first time writer have your story edited, if for spelling at least. If you're lucky you'll find an editor who will make suggestions for changes to help your story flow better. Write whatever you want to first. Personally I find it harder to write shorter pieces - it's tough figuring out only which details matter. In a long piece, you have more room to wander. It just takes a little more time actually writing it.
