Old memories
I've done enough trudging around in the wet and the cold (and the hot and the dry!) carrying entirely to much "stuff" on my back to sympathize with Maralin. he evidently has a knack for soldiering...
well done.
High level meetings
I wonder if Keren is with the Duke? Huuuuuuuuuuuummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm!
DJ
I wonder about that too.
I also wonder what Keren's response will be when Maralin's familiarity with guns is mentioned. Keren's a very bright boy. He and Garia had to have talked about others being brought to Anmar by the Beings. I can't wait to see where this goes!
~And so it goes...
I see him being promoted again
He needs the rank to supervise the training of men in new tactics and weaponry.
Maralin, in my opinion has
Maralin, in my opinion has kept more knowledge regarding what she saw in the old war movies and TV shows, in her mind. All she needs is someone, possibly Garia and/or Keran to help her bring it all out. Hopefully, the three will finally meet up with each other and become a real help to each other as well.
Problem is at least for now Maralin is a foreigner
The Duke is not his liege I believe. Maralin has no formal requirement to support the Duke at this point. Also there may be the need for a formal alliance and treaties between them before any advanced knowledge may be shared between these two nations,
Maralin I think is less knowledgeable than Garia is if I were to guess so *shrug* I don't know if Maralin can offer anything Garia does not already have.
Not quite so
When Maralin was inducted into the levy he swore an oath to serve the Duke "for the duration". This was quite a common happening in medieval times and even as recent as World War II.
If he decides to take a permanent position with the Duke's forces he would, of course, take a proper oath of alliegance and at that point become a naturalized Jothan.
Thank you for your comment,

I think...
Something that needs to be taken into consideration is that it seems that each time the Beings bring someone to Anmar, it's for a specific purpose. Garia was brought to help accelerate the technological advancement of Anmar. It stands to reason that Maralin was brought for another reason. Given how easily Maralin has adapted to being in command and military matters in general, at this point I would hazard a guess that Maralin has been brought by the Beings to help modernize Palarand's (and its allies) military. The reason behind this guess is that Garia was surprised at how well she remembered scientific and technological details. Maralin is surprised at how he can remember details of military tactics and equipment.
Of course, I might be completely off target.
~And so it goes...
Not off target
Not at all, I'd say.
Garia has, pretty much from the start, shown that she not only remembers more details about 18th / 19th century engineering than a 15-year-old boy should but is also very quick to grasp how this knowledge is applicable to what happens in Palarand. Maralin seems to have similar skills regarding military life, going in a few days from a raw recruit to a competent NCO who's leading intelligence-gathering patrols, and redesigning uniforms and small-unit tactics. Not something you'd expect from a cook struggling with an abusive boyfriend and a related drug habit. I'd guess the quasi-divine beings have essentially amplified the natural inclinations and potential of both of these people and removed as many of the residual problems from their old lives as necessary.
Keren is making a serious effort to form an alliance in the Palar valley. It would seem that they now have someone else to take over the military side of that project, so that he can concentrate on the political issues.
Yes and no
Garia did pretty well with leading her small unit into battle (as an officer-like way) during her second ambush, good situational awareness, battlefield management except for her near fatal lapse with Fikt/Sopo. Just because she has not had a need to command a small team in the same way Maralin has had to does not mean she cannot. She was raised as a boy after all and likely had to have been exposed even more so to male culture and the hierarchy as a boy. She has shown she does have a gift for command, possibly better at strategic then tactical but that does not mean her tactical thinking is necessarily incompetent.
I don't think...
Anyone was disparaging Garia's use of military knowledge. I was just theorizing that Maralin's military knowledge may have been amplified in the same way as Garia's knowledge of technology.
~And so it goes...
Okay
I would suggest one minor correction then. Maralin is here to help modernize Joth's military capability, not Palarand's necessarily as you wrote above. Garia is taking care of Palarand I think. Thing is, Joth seems like a reasonable state and as foreseen in SEE the valley states may very well form a union one day, with or without Yod. Maralin could serve a parallel effort, not necessarily be the sole spearhead of the effort to modernize their military for all the valley states.
Given there is common cause at this time, it would make sense for Palarand and Joth to coordinate military matters and if Keren is meeting the Duke then it would of course be of high importance that Garia meet with Maralin. I am not sure if Keren would be there though as he is not suppose to be in a position to put himself at risk in an invaded country.
I don't think so.
I'm sticking to my theory, and will wait for the last AoJ and the next SEE to "see" if my theory holds any weight. I think you've made too many assumptions.
~And so it goes...
Okay I'm Plenty Interested in This Story........
but I'm missing SEE. I recall that this story was supposed to last 5 postings (likely a bit more). Penny, any idea when SEE will resume?
SEE / AoJ interactions
I have explained this but it is easy to miss something when browsing the site. I do frequently.
I never really liked the bald statement, "Joth has fallen to Yod" and decided to write a mini-tale based around that fact.
While still thinking about that I realized that the geography of the Valley was going to encourage Keren to do something his father is going to consider rash. However a look at the map, and knowledge of the situation from SEE means that anything he does won't be that dangerous. He can probably get as far as Forguland without crossing paths with anyone from Yod and he's hardly likely to be traveling in full uniform with banners flying.
That being the case, it was obvious that Maralin (or whoever) stands a good chance of meeting Keren along the way. If that were to be the case, I needed to fix that part of the story before Keren gets back to the palace and explains everything!
So that's why SEE was put on the back burner for a short while. What happens in Joth is important, but not directly to Keren and Garia's personal situation. There will be one final chapter of AoJ which will be posted next week, and I an already working on SEE #113.

Thanks
I've read your Somewhere Else? Not Entirely blog, but didn't connect the dots to the level that you have explained here. Your approach is a reasonable and interesting way to flesh out significant happenings without adding another point of view in SEE.
Exactly
It let me do two things. First, to expand on the situation 'up valley' and show how AoJ will tie in to SEE eventually.
Second, it gave me a chance to show a reverse transformation. That has different consequences than most of us consider. I admit I was surprised myself when I had to think about it in detail. It also allowed me to show a situation where the protagonist didn't end up cosseted in the palace, at least not right away.

How is this going to play out.

New clothing worked
Maralin was proven right with the change in clothing colors, and they were successful in their reconnicence of the two Joth gates. With more practice, and better clothing, the could get to the point where they could ambush the Yod patrols. Ambush enough and they may stop sending out patrols.
The word gun is why Maralin is going to see the Duke, and maybe travel a bit further south to the palace. Together with Garia, they could come up with a combination that could prove decisive in defeating Yod.
But first, Maralin will need to trust these people enough to tell them the whole truth.
Others have feelings too.
Directions
Actually, if you are referring to the palace of Robanar in Palarand, it would be approximately north-east of Joth.
