Pretenses
Em's friends know she has a nephew, so it would be weird that she'd never mentioned his name, but no one has brought up the coincidence that the cousin she's never talked about has the same name as her nephew. So it's possible that Em isn't really lying to her friends, only to Kim, and the complicated story is just to get Kim to stop worrying about being read. If George and Amy and Bec and Fran all know that Kim is really Em's nephew but don't care, it could be less stressful in the long run.

No graceful way out, now. That was the frosting on the cake. Having told Fran (s)he was having a period, there will be some seriously out-of-joint noses later should the truth come out. While there might have been an "innocent" explanation for the feminine presentation, there really can't be for adopting a declaration of genetic female.
So, this is going to be fun! Not to mention introducing a bit more suspense.
Consequences
Yes Em came up with the excuse on Kims behalf to give him space. Whether or not she was believed by Fran who is such a smart alpha woman is doubtful. Could be more likely she'd be even more suspicious and inquisitive after such a lame excuse. Thanks for your comment and it is well noted.

Liking this story as well as I did "The Visit." There was something about this chapter that was tickling my brain when I was originally going to comment, so I backed out of the new comments page to figure out what it was.
I guess it was Frankie saying she'd teach, or was it turn, Kimber into an Alpha. From what I have seen, Alphas are naturally occuring, or they are a result of trauma or hitting rock bottom (could include someone's BS breaking point). I'd like to see how Kim is turned or trained alpha.
Lol, I like a happy story with obstacles, so I'm kinda of hoping it goes one way, but that may not be the direction the story is planned to go. I'm just gonna follow along and enjoy myself with what has turned out to be a pleasure thus far.
Frankie - Alpha Woman
I think you should consider that Frankie is a woman who really challenges people. She is a woman who is strong and marches to the beat of her own drum. She has high expectations for herself and from the person she dates. She believes that women nowadays are more independent and stronger than ever. In her opinion gone are the days of women “needing” a man to help them. She socialises with her girlfriends and men are not necessarily on her priority list. She likes to have men working for her. She has taken an immediate shine to Kimbers or was it planned?

Fib after fib on top of fibs
Kim has felt, and told Em, he feels more confident as girl Kim than his normal self.
His normal self was bullied to the point he withdrew within himself and seldom, if ever socialized. His poor self image radiates and affects how others treat him.
Going where he isn't known has changed how others see him. Kim has been seen as a girl more often since he began staying with Em, even having the Center move him to the lady's lockroom because men perceived him as female and found his presence uncomfortable.
Then Em started her magic, all for fun, and when Kim now dresses, a very beautiful is all whose seen.
The perception at the Center that Kim was female wasn't a fib since Kim never declared he was female. Em, on the other hand, has spoken out of the other side of her mouth and left many with the impression that Kim is female. That when Kim looks completely female when dresses enhances that perception.
Now the question is why Frankie was so concerned about Kim going to the ladys with Em? Does Frankie have an agenda with Kim? If she does have an agenda with Kim will that continue when she discovers the truth? Or might she become Godzilla and take it out on Kim, making hospitalization necessary? Fran does not sound as though she likes to be played, implied or otherwise.
Others have feelings too.
