5.
"I don't understand."
Jason was used to that very statement. Just never in this type of situation.
Melissa’s jaw had practically detached from her face, her gaze darting between the apathetic teenager in the oversized t-shirt and the powerful woman standing beside him. The silence stretched, heavy and thick, as the receptionist tried to reconcile the image of the "street urchin" with the concept of property ownership. The guard, Harry, stepped back instinctively, his posture shifting from an aggressor to a subordinate in a matter of seconds. He looked at Jason with a newfound, albeit confused, respect, while Melissa looked as though she had just swallowed a lemon.
Jess walked over to the reception desk. "What's not to understand." She pointed at Jason. "She owns the building, she owns the shops, she owns the company."
The color drained from Melissa's face as the truth truly dawned on her. "But then that would make her..."
Jason hated flexing. It was one of the reasons he tried to keep things on the downlow. He didn't like to throw his weight around because it was too exhausting. It was one thing to be mistaken as a girl everywhere he went but he couldn't hide that. But his accolades were different. He didn't stand out unless there was no other choice. He knew that Jess would handle things.
It was the reason they decided she would be the front of the company.
"She's..." Jess started but Jason shook his head.
"A very important investor," Jason added without a second thought.
Jess stared at him then leaned over to whisper in his ear. "That's what we're going with?"
"It's accurate", Jason whispered back.
Melissa visibly relaxed.
There was no reason to say anything more. The girl was humbled, that was enough.
They had come out with the idea in college shortly after meeting. Jason was fourteen at the time, studying in the library. Out of habit, he was doodling in his notebook. He and Jess were sharing a table, she was sitting across from him when she noticed it. She was a fashion major. When she saw what he was doodling---a dress that Trix asked him to design for her---Jess flipped. Their friendship grew from there. It was ultimately Jess who came up with Vex. They made a deal: Jess would run the company, Jason would stay in the background. He never expected it to take off like it had.
When everyone started talking about the genius designer behind Vex, the mystery only deepened. He had no intention of coming out and saying it was him. The mystery sold clothes. It was a win win for all involved.
"That's a strike" Jess said, staring both Melissa and Harry down. "You understand what that means right? Vex prides itself on people who treat others with respect. You insulted a very important investor. If Miss Cooper is willing to let it slide..."
Jason sighed. Melissa was rude but harmless. "I'll let it go but only once."
"Apologize" Jess said coldly.
Melissa stammered through the apology, on the verge of tears. Harry nodded politely through his.
"Don't let it happen again" Jess said sternly then led Jason toward the doors leading to the premium section of the store.
The moment the heavy, soundproofed doors clicked shut behind them, the icy CEO persona evaporated. Jess practically lunged at Jason, her arms wrapping around his shoulders as she let out a high pitched squeal. The authoritative stride was replaced by a bouncy, energetic hop that nearly knocked him over. "Oh my god, Coop! I missed you so much!" she gushed, her eyes sparkling with genuine excitement. She grabbed his arm, leaning her head against his shoulder while she beamed at him. "You look absolutely adorable today, seriously. That oversized look is so effortless!"
The real Jess had emerged.
They made a very distinct pair. When they were in school together, no one could quite figure out how they were friends. Most people kept their distance from him back then. He was the little fourteen year old genius, who quietly read books and kept his head down. He was the only one his age, everyone else was older and mature. As soon as they met, Jess was like a wrecking ball. She swung into his life and opened the world for him. To say she was his best friend was an understatement, she was his savior.
Not that he'd ever tell her that.
Jess looped her arm in his, showing off the space. "What do you think?"
Jason looked around the premium lounge, his eyes scanning the seamless integration of the obsidian flooring and the floating glass displays. He had approved every single blueprint, signed off on the material choices, and vetted the lighting schemes through a series of encrypted emails, but he had never actually stepped foot inside the flagship store. He had always preferred to keep a distance, treating the project like a game of SimCity where he directed the growth from a remote screen. Seeing the physical manifestation of his vision was different.
"Its a bit much, isn't it?" he asked, not sure how he felt about everything being so private and elegant.
It bred people like Melissa.
Jess laughed, the sound echoing through the pristine white lounge. "A bit much? Coop, this is the gold standard of luxury. The clients love feeling like they've stepped into a futuristic sanctuary. Besides, you're the one who insisted on the obsidian floors. You told me they looked like a frozen void." She gave his arm a playful squeeze, her expression softening. "But I get it. You've always been a ghost in your own machine. You signed off on every blueprint and approved every light fixture from miles away, but you never once wanted to set foot in the actual building until today."
"I've been busy" he said truthfully.
Jess fake pouted, letting go of his arm. "I've been bored without you, the city is not the same without my bestie!".
Jason leaned against a floating glass display, his eyes drifting toward a piece of fabric that caught the light. It was a deep, midnight blue silk that shimmered with a subtle iridescent glow, a design he had conceptualized months ago but had never seen materialized. He reached out, his slender fingers grazing the material. The texture was perfect, a testament to the quality of the artisans he had hired. It was a strange feeling, standing in a room full of things he designed, admired by distant people who worshipped a phantom version of him, while he stood right there in a t-shirt and combat boots.
"How is your project coming along?" asked Jess, a moment later.
He sighed. There were a lot of them actually. Thankfully Maya was handling most of them but the important one was still a work in progress. "Its getting there".
"What about the Whitmore one?" she asked, a bit more seriously.
He sighed. That one was a bit more complicated.
"Its proving more difficult than I anticipated" he truthfully admitted.
"Has Maya..." Jess started but Jason interrupted her.
"There's no digital trail, Jess." He was frustrated by the whole thing. "There's nothing for Maya to find. If there was, do you think I'd even bother coming here in the first place."
"Why not ask Nathan, with his connections..."
Jason shook his head. "No, Arthur Whitmore is too cautious for that. What he has, he's keeping it close to him. I need to get into his paper files."
Jess snorted. "Who keeps paper files these days?"
"Someone with something they want to hide."
Jess smirked. "They fucked with the wrong person". She paused for a moment, her mood shifting then clapped triumphantly. "All of that is tomorrow's problem, bestie. Today, you're here to relax right!"
She stepped closer, her eyes scanning his face with that intuitive warmth that always managed to ground him. Whenever Jason felt the suffocating pressure of the world or the isolation of his own secrets, Jess had this effortless way of making him feel like he wasn't alone in the world. She was a bright light, a vivid burst of color that could cut through the greyest of his moods. She didn't ask for explanations or demand a map of his mind; she simply accepted him as he was, providing a sanctuary where he didn't have to be a genius, a ghost, or a pawn.
The problem was, he was always scared of Jess's idea of "relaxing".
"What do you have in mind?" he asked, cautiously.
"Lunch of course!".
It was never just "lunch" with her though.
"I'm afraid to ask what else".
Jess beamed, her eyes lighting up with a predatory sort of glee. She didn't answer with words; instead, she pivoted on her heel and practically dragged him toward the back of the premium lounge, where a series of opulent, velvet-curtained fitting rooms awaited. "You can't go to lunch in that oversized rag, Coop. Not when we're going to L'Avenir. You'll be practically invisible, and we can't have that. Besides, I have a new sample from the 'Midnight Bloom' line that was practically screaming your name the moment it came off the mannequin."
Midnight Bloom wasn't one of the lines he worked on personally but like everything else, it had to go across his desk for final approval. He remembered it as something chic and girly, the type of look that teen girls and young women would flock too, i.e. most of their customer base. It was a project that Jess spearheaded, so it was definitely her style.
Jess practically threw him into the fitting room, her enthusiasm bordering on manic. "Just trust me, Coop! You have the bone structure of a goddess and the poise of a ballerina. If we play this right, we can make the entire East End stare." She disappeared for a moment and returned with a hanger holding a shimmering, short sparkly dress that looked like it was woven from starlight and neon pink. Along with it came a pair of cute heels and some oversized designer sunglasses that looked like they belonged on a movie star.
"Why are they pink?" he asked, eying the garment and shoes.
Jess waved it off with a giggle, before pushing the garments into his arms. "Its all in your size. Hurry up, we have a reservation and NO hiding that cute little figure of yours."
She lightly smacked him on the butt before pushing him toward the dressing room.
Once the heavy velvet curtain fell shut, the silence of the boutique returned, though the muffled sound of Jess humming a pop tune drifted through the fabric. Jason let out a long, weary sigh and began to peel off his clothes. He stepped out of the scuffed boots and pulled the oversized t-shirt over his head, tossing them onto the small bench. He stood there for a moment in the mirror, staring at his reflection. He looked down at his chest, where a tight compression binder held everything securely in place. It was a necessary layer of armor, masking the softness of his frame to keep the curves from showing too clearly, though the effort often felt like a battle against his own biology.
Biology.
A funny thing about that.
On paper he was technically male and yet...
Jason sighed, reaching for the edges of the compression binder. He let the fabric slide away from his torso, feeling the sudden, sharp rush of relief as the tension vanished. He let his small C cup breasts free, the skin pale and soft against the dim light of the fitting room. He stared at himself in the mirror, tracing the curve of his chest with a thoughtful expression; If Arthur Whitmore knew what he was really hiding under his shirt, the man would have a coronary.
That brought a small smile to his lips.
A gentle knock on the door brought him out of the moment.
The door opened a moment later and Jess slipped her way inside. She was holding a bra and panties, with an amused smile. "Wasn't sure if you were going to be needing these" she said softly then paused. "Can't remember the last time I saw those."
The "those" she was referring too were of course his breasts. He could count the amount of people who had actually seen them on one hand.
"Its been awhile for me too" he admitted honestly.
Its not like he kept them bound all the time---that was painful---but he rarely let them be on display. Generally, he just wore a sports bra or baggy tops to hide them. He didn't hate them, he just wasn't sure what to make of them. While he technically didn't identify with either gender, it was easier to try and pass as a boy. It was just physically taxing to do so all the time.
It was nice to let loose sometimes.
Besides, its not like he was much of one anyway.
Jason reached for the lingerie, the fabric feeling like a cool, liquid weight in his palms. These were from the new intimate line, a collection of pieces designed to be as much a piece of art as they were clothing. He stepped into the panties first, the sheer, midnight lace clinging to his hips with a precision that felt almost clinical. Then came the bra, a delicate, structured piece of ivory silk and gold hardware that cradled his chest perfectly. It was an exquisite fit, the kind of garment that felt like a secret weapon against the skin, offering a level of support and luxury that made the memory of his compression binder feel like a distant, barbaric nightmare.
He took a moment to admire his figure in the mirror. There was only a girl there. One that didn't look even the slightest bit like a boy. Not even the small lump between his legs could fool anyone.
He reached for the dress, the fabric a shimmering, iridescent pink that seemed to change color as he moved. The garment was a masterpiece of construction, featuring a structured bodice and a skirt that floated around his thighs like a cloud of stardust. He slid it on, the silk gliding over the ivory lace of the lingerie. The dress hugged his narrow waist and accentuated the curve of his hips, fitting him with an eerie, mathematical precision. It was a look that demanded attention, a bold statement of elegance and fragility that would have made Arthur Whitmore's skin crawl with visceral disgust.
Jason stepped into the heels, his posture naturally shifting. He didn't have to try to be graceful; it was simply how he moved. He leaned in toward the mirror, adjusting the strap of the dress. With the oversized sunglasses perched on his head, the transformation was complete. He didn't look like a boy playing dress-up, nor did he look like a girl trying too hard. He looked like a creature of high society, a polished gem of the East End who had been born into luxury rather than fighting for it.
"There's my girl!" Jess said happily, clapping her hands.
Jason smoothed the front of the dress, running his---no her---hands down her side.
This felt natural again.
"You want me to do your makeup real quick?" Jess asked, excitedly.
She knew if she said "No", she'd pester her until she agreed.
Jason sat on the small velvet ottoman and tilted her head back, closing her eyes as Jess stepped into her space. She could feel the light, rhythmic tap of her fingers against her jaw, guiding her face to the perfect angle. The air of the fitting room was filled with the scent of expensive primers and the soft clink of glass bottles. Jess worked with a focused, surgical precision, her touch light but sure. She didn't go for anything heavy or dramatic, opting instead for a soft, luminous glow that highlighted the natural symmetry of her features.
A dusting of shimmering pink shadow swept across her lids, echoing the iridescent hue of the dress, while a touch of rose-tinted gloss gave her lips a subtle, inviting fullness. As she blended a hint of peach blush into her cheekbones, Jason felt the familiar detachment from the boy the Whitmores were trying to forge. In the mirror, the reflection staring back was a vision of delicate grace, a girl who looked as though she had been sculpted from moonlight and silk. The makeup didn't feel like a mask; it felt like a correction, aligning her external image with the fluidity she felt within.
"Now you look like the girl I know" Jess announced after finishing.
She stepped back, admiring her handiwork with a critical eye. Jason stood up, the iridescent fabric of the dress catching the light in a way that made her look as if she were glowing. She felt a strange sense of liberation, the physical weight of the feminine clothing acting as a counterbalance to the heavy psychological burden of the Whitmore estate. For a few hours, she could stop being the disappointing son or the invisible orphan, and instead be the ethereal mystery that the high fashion world adored from a distance.
The two of them left the dressing room, the velvet curtains parting with a soft hiss. As they stepped back into the main showroom, the atmosphere shifted instantly. The hushed conversations of the elite clientele died down, and several heads turned in unison. A group of young women stared the two of them down.
Jason ignored them as she followed Jess back toward the reception desk, Melissa pretending to keep busy but secretly staring.
The receptionist had a stray thought: *She's not just an investor, she's...*
Walking out the door, Jason turned to Jess. “Let’s go to Charlie’s place for lunch.”
Jess smiled and nodded long. “You’re the boss.”
Author’s note: As I’m sure all of you know, comments are life blood to an author. I’m not begging or demanding, but I certainly would appreciate anything you have to say (or ask). It doesn’t have to be long and involved, just give me your reaction to the story. Thanks in advance...EOF

Two revelations
In this one part we learned that Coop is the main fashion designer behind Vex and also that on top of all the other femininity she's got breasts. And you've promised us more for the next part!
More
Well nothing big as the reveal in this chapter but the next one does give us something ;)
I'd thought androgenous like David Bowie as Ziggy Stardust
But, and Coop says it best
"Biology.
A funny thing about that.
On paper he was technically male and yet..."
He also said he/she is more comfortable as female, yet does not identify as either sex
All this obvious wealth yet is a ghost in life
We've been told Coop is a genius
And his carefully chosen friends adore him... Jess in particular
A lot of mystery here
This IS BC so intersex lurks in the back of my mind
But is the secret to Coop that simple
Has he or is it really, she ever had a complete medical workup?
Though Coop has a girl he is enamored of we've been told
What is Coop, just a Genus and a bit unusual biologically but male where it counts, so to speak
Or something much more complex
I agree a certain pompous head of family will explode if Coops breasts are "exposed"
Coop is getting "very interesting" as Artie Johnson used to say

John in Wauwatosa
Coop
Coop is Coop, that's what makes Coop so interesting. A long time ago, I wrote a story about a character called Geo. There's a lot of Geo in Coop :)
Jess
Everyone should have a Jess in their life to brighten up their existence a bit. She's a great addition to the story.
Jess
She was one of those characters that I thought up in the moment. I love her a lot too :)
Great reveal
Intersex is a reasonable guess, PAIS, CAIS would be a reasonable guess though the smaller genitals may deny CAIS.
I am amazed that no modeling scout has gotten wind of this stunner.
I want to pile on and say Jess is a great blithe spirit which somehow has the management teeth when she is in role, almost Jekyll and Hyde.
True friends are rare privileges imho, absolutely priceless. To me they are family, even better actually, they are your Chosen Family versus the poor excuses that are his parents.
Finally, I mean, Jason is naturally fem even when using the 'he' pronoun, now that it has shifted to 'she', the femininity must be going to overdrive.
Coop's Medical Condition
I made it fictional. I probably won't go into too much about it, its easier that way.
Really loving this story..
Coop is a fascinating creation, a nice mix of all seeing and not really understanding themself at all.
If owning the hotest designer fashion house is only one of the irons in Coops fire, I shudder to think what the others are.
Really enjoyable writing. Thank you. Lucy xx
"Lately it occurs to me..
what a long strange trip its been."
Irons
There might be a few more ;)
The dress designer
So the whole stylish clothing line at Vex is Coop's work. What a reveal. She's got breasts, ok, yawn. That just kind of goes with the rest of Coop's appearance.
What I'm wondering is if any spy from the Whitmore's will see them at lunch? That would add fuel to the fire. Looking forward to more EoF.
>>> Kay
Spy?
I wouldn't say anyone would intentionally spy on Coop. If someone was there, it was just coincidence.
Breasts
That they are there as part of her medical condition is not a huge surprise, sure, but it is still an important data point to her identity, namely that he did not have them surgically removed, aka 'top surgery'.
Gynecomastic men get top surgery all the time as far as I know and he could easily justify it instead of binding it all of the time when trying to present as male so it is an intentional choice which speaks to the gender fluid nature they have.
That said, I am waiting for the review of her name, Jason just won't cut it in any public situation.
Her Name
Funny you should mention that...I hear the next chapter has something new :P
Now, that
Was a chapter worth waiting for! Well done!
Hugs
Diana
Thanks :)
I'm glad you liked it. Hopefully Ch.6 will be posted next week. I just gotta get cracking on 7 :D
