As my vision has deteriorated, I have become dependent on a tablet reader. I fell into using a fire tablet when my brother sent me one when my arthritis prevented handling or turning pages in paper books. That problem is under control but the poor selection of available large print books means I need to be able to adjust font size. That nine year old tablet is failing. I'm torn between an e-reader and a new cheap tablet. If you've used either, or preferably both, which do you find better? Why?

Fire Tablet
I personally use a Kindle Fire Tablet. Although my vision is fine (at least with my bifocal glasses it is), so I don't need larger text when reading, I am dyslexic and need the SCREEN READER feature that is available on most Kindle books. With vision issues, you might find it helpful at times. Even if you are reading along while it reads to you, it can take some of the stress of reading off of you and your eyes. If your vision is continuing to deteriorate, it might be more of a necessity as time goes on.
NOTE: not all Kindles have a speaker in them to support the Screen Reader Feature without a Bluetooth connection to a speaker or headphones. The Kindle Fire does have a speaker in it, so I get the Fire Tablet.

I currently use a 60.00 Android tablet that my wife ordered just before she passed. I can surf and do email just fine. It will not read a rich text document, but does fine with txt. files such as fm stuff, fm swi files and the formats Used here including the printer ready files. Also pdf files. A free kendle conversion allows use of those files. Epub files open just like kindle, but not in kindle. My first step is turning off 95 percent of Google I will never use, especially since Google is so non- invasive. Comes with blue tooth and wireless Internet. It automatically opens a gmail account/email if you don't have one, so it will transfer most files to a new device automatically, same with saved passwords. Usually does what I need it to. Won't use a USB stick, but has a spot for a micro card.
Just personal taste-------- I don't like ONN brand. I also prefer landscape, so if the charging plug in is on the short side of the machine, it is in my way when holding the device and I have damaged two machines that required replacing the connection. Cheaper to just buy another tablet. My current is a tab 10 pro. Using landscape, speakers on the lower back left and right. Charge port is top left out of the way, camera is top center. Micro card point on top between charge and camera. I really prefer Lenovo brand for numerous reasons. But the charge point is center on short side ,in my way, and easy to break. It works if you use it in portrait. Touch screen to enlarge or adjust in settings
Text size adjustment….
I use an iPad (have used both mini and regular size) and the kindle app (nearly 5,000 books). I have to increase font size. Standard Wi-Fi connection. I recommend the most memory you can afford (helps later with upgraded OS). I also email, surf, online order, and bank online with it.

I much prefer e-Ink screens (such as the Kindle Paper White), though they are much slower and probably lower resolution than conventional displays.
If your eyesight is going this may make a lot of difference, or almost none ! If you can, try both sorts of display.

Oh, the web browser on the Kindle Paper White was terrible when I last had a chance to try it, so if it hasn't improved, that is a negative, but I found e-Ink much more comfortable.
