I kept to myself for the remainder of the morning. I mean, I talked to Christy and Becky during class switch and told them what happened. How I was going to have to spend my noon time sitting in a small room with Josh. We all thought it was kind of funny that a week before, it would have been perfect with just the two of us together; well, with a teacher or someone from the office looking in on us, but we'd still be near each other.

Once Upon a Time
I spent nearly every waking--and sleeping--hour of the summer and early fall with Josh--at least as much as we could as our parents would allow. They would attempt to keep us in eyesight, or appoint one of Josh's brothers to be the "anti-baby-sitter". The nominated brother usually got bored as we would just sit next to each other and say nothing that would interest them. It wouldn't take long before they stormed out without a word or their attention would wander to playing Super Mario Bros. and completely ignore us, which was always the idea.

The last time I saw my father was when I was in sixth grade. He had dropped us off at school and that night, his car, the one that Alex drives now, was found on the side of the Springdale Hwy. No damage, well, nothing out of the ordinary. The glove box was untouched. There was still an immense pile of coffee cups on the passenger side and fuel in the tank.

No key in the ignition.
No other tire tracks.
No blood.

I slowly moved to kiss him. I wasn't thinking anymore. All of the health videos, magazines, books, gossip, all of these things that told you how to do everything...complete and utter shit. No one should have had to study how to lean over and kiss someone. We didn't take a class or have cards to study before a test--we just did what came natural.

Cherry Moone is a story I have been working on since 1996...and no...it's still incomplete.

The story is about a family that lives on the outside of town and life. It is based on life at my former high school and a lot of the dialouge (the car trip to school in chapter one, for example) is almost verbatim.

Sorry, work and life has kept me from writing lately.

Chapter 10 takes its title from the song "Had to Grow Up" from the album "Life" by Aselin Debison,

While technically the song's lyrics have nothing to do with the story...if I could find a way to write lyrics based on the storyline...I think it would work.

Story note: Some parts of the the story are true...such as the part about the truck parked in the country...that did happen and we never did find the screw that was removed from the brake light casing.
