In "Soviet Russia" you will pay under 100 dollars per month for power, centralized heating, centralized hot water (50+ weeks per year), roads and parking cleaning (including snow removal during winter)... (my monthly bills are usually under 50 if converted into dollars.)
Last time someone "broke" into my car was some 20 years ago... They just took some spare change from the pocket and half a pack of sweets. Door was opened without any damage. But yes, you have to keep interior of the car clean of anything that could look valuable.
As an "Expat" you can find a nice 40 hours per week office job with the nice salary.
Fuel for the car is under 1 dollar per liter for the most expensive kind. Electricity is around 0.07 dollars per kWh "peak"...
Total tax is around 13%, medical is mostly free (there is a hidden tax for medical, but it is ... hidden, you don't need to concern yourself with it and if you are unemployed officially - medical is still free. Up to GCS/SRS in some cases).
Sorry for my rant here... Just remembered a meme about Peter Parker/Spiderman, that he preferred to wait it out after the bite of the radioactive spider because medical bills would have killed him for sure. (And I know that you are in Canada and situation in Canada is much better.)
And after listing all of the "contras" for living in Russia, there are some "pros" ;-)

Anyway... When someone breaks into your car...
It feels like violation. Not counting costs and time for the repairs... And so often it is done by somebody just because your car looks tidy, or washed, or polished... And those people build a hate for you like "you think you are better than me! so get it!"
I feel your pain. I can relate...

A long time ago, we owned an old car and the driver's window broke twice in a short period of time. The second time it happened I was actually driving the thing to the dealership for a service, so I know that it wasn't a break-in or vandalism. Nearly scared the pants off me at the time, though.
It turned out that something was misaligned in the door such that the window got stressed under certain conditons. It was a long time ago, mid-80's, I don't remember exactly what but it got fixed when they put the new pane in and we never had any further trouble.

My mom's Subaru is on its 6th windshield, and its not even that old, 2 were defects, the rest were because its simply designed such that debris can hit and cause a fracture fairly easily.
Sometimes it's just vandalism
Many years ago, I needed to stop in a local old business district where the businesses had no off street parking. So I was forced to park in the neighborhood near by. Someone took exception to where I parked. When I came back to get my car, there was a spot right in the middle of the windshield on the lower edge that looked like it had been hit by a hammer. Pure and simple vandalism.
Nearly as long ago, I drove a 79 Datsun (Nissan) station wagon. We didn't know it when we moved in, but there was a half-way house (house for convicts transitioning back into society) just a block down the street from us. As unknown to me Datsun and Toyota were the number one and two most frequently stolen cars, due to the design of the locks. Any flat blade screwdriver could force the lock to turn on both the door and the ignition.
One day, I found my car in a grocery store parking lot, across from the half-way house. Another time I was awakened by the police at 2:00 AM. The officer asked if I owned a brown 1969 station wagon. I said yes and then he asked where it was parked. I told him it was in my driveway. He shook his head and informed me that someone had reported that the car was parked in front of there house around the block from the half-way house. They reported it because they had just returned home from their swing shift job and heard someone turn off the car by standing on the break and dumping the clutch. It seems that a screwdriver can be used to turn the ignition on, but the mechanism won't let it be used to turn it off. The officer offered to go park behind the car to keep it there until I could get dressed and come get it.
I bought a device that locked between the clutch an steering wheel, different than "The Club" but rendered the vehicle undriveable. I took to leaving the car unlocked because using a screwdriver to force the lock in the door messed up the lock. Having replaced it, I didn't want to have it damaged just for the thief to discover they couldn't steal the car. When I installed my anti-theft device, I left the packaging on the seat. The next day, I got in the car to go somewhere and the packaging was gone. As I drove away, I saw it laying in the street about a half a block away.
