what would usually happen in a story
like this is for some organization who has been trying to find this armour for millennia now knows it's all together and to come try to find it.
Maybe they buried someone as one of Sophia's friends as a sleeper agent.
Another thing would be if some villain attacks the city and he feels he can help.
I like the idea of there being a war, out in the public eye against some group aliens or demons and he gets recruited into that. His mom could be tech support for him, and as he uses it more and more, he gets addicted to the power, has to see a counsellor to deal with that addiction and with gender issues.
While fighting the enemy, it could be that only women are capable of wearing the other suits of armor that allow fighting this enemy. He falls in love with one of the other women, maybe.

If I HaveThis Right...
It only takes the one piece to change the wearer, and Sophia thinks the length of the change is exponential. If those are true, the previous owner could have worn it for a relatively long period of time (weeks? months?) and made the change last for her presumed lifetime, which would let her put the bracer back into circulation.
Lee's supposed to be the expert here, but his assertion that the piece is now attuned to Mark and won't work for anyone else seems premature at best. All we know is that it won't work on Sophia; it'd seem quite conceivable that there's a category of people it can change: males, teenagers, gamers, whatever.
Along those lines, based on their similarities in height and strength, we may have just found out Cathy's origin story.

Suit's wearer
Hmm, the suit could be attuned / bound to the energy signature of Mark's soul. Which would mean he was a girl in a previous life.
Fae Armour
I am suspecting the armour only react to some race of fae.. since atleast one of Mark parent is a mutant, most probably he is one too. And he might already have some trait present in his body which could have react to the magic armour.
And by absorbing some power from the armour, I am afraid he has already starting to cook some sort of a fae hybrid in his body. Just imagine if originally he should be a nimp and the armour was meant for some other fae race.
It can be very confusing mix and can be a centre of focus from would be friend and foe as well.
My oh my.. what ever it would be, it will be a blast.. hahhahaha..

Power and sex causes mushy minds
Mark has been bullied from one school to the next, and is tired of being the pet project of the school bullies. The latest group got their butts in trouble after going after Mark. And what, lunch money? Really? They still think they're in grade school, or something?
Cathy hits Mark and blames him for her getting expelled? Huh? How did her getting kicked out of school fall on Mark's shoulders? He didn't tell her to hit him, but he did the right thing by reporting the attack.
Now he's experienced power such as he's never felt before because of the spell on the armor. And his hind brain is telling him if he had been that powerful before the bullies would have left him alone.
So power has turned his rational mind to mush. The fact he turns into a girl has escaped him over the power he feels. It shocked him at first, but after lifting that heaviest weight his only thought now is being strong.
Chances are Mark is going to carry that brace with him and the next time he's attacked, by Cathy maybe, he'll use the bracer to power up. But...um...how will he handle that person seeing him change into a woman? And what if the wrong person watches it happen?
One very angry young man has shut down the rational side of his brain, and hasn't thought far enough down the road to think about the period that is likely in her future.
Others have feelings too.
