Virus CLeaners Don't Always Work
Clean your cache and cookies after running your virus protection. Both places are a favorite for virus programmers. Then run your virus protection again after you clean. I also suggest you use a virus protection which scans your "web root", or basic programming as key loggers often hid there.
I've even had to deal with virus embedded in boot up commands, and in hard drive sectors. The best virus protection is usually lagging behind the latest scammers.
Hugs Ahabidah, stay with it hon, persistence will win the war. Frustration is the norm. Growling along with exceptionally colorful language, and placing a hex on virus writers helps.

Nasty little things
Had one last year that was hidden in a locked down json file (ctac.json? I think). I ended up having to delete the things after after several searches via my Fedora partition because not even Microsoft Power Toys would touch it.really need my new case to tramsplant my mini-ITX mother board in to. May also pop anther m.2 drive in there. Have a spare 8TB one here somewhere. I really want that FLP02 case /drool

And hope for the best. My Laptop is a fifteen-year-old Dell. Whenever I get frustrated, it just smiles and explains that it's doing the best that it can. Or as Gandalf might say,
"Latitude. She's a Lady among all laptops, and she's been my friend through many dangers..."

I'd seriously consider Linux Mint. You can run it (or just about any Linux distro) off a USB stick and see if it suits you, then go for the install after that if it works well for you. Great with older hardware, solid protection against ads, spyware and so on... with the added bonus of not having AI crammed into every corner of your workflow. Also, no more OneDrive and 365 subscription fees. Do Microslop really deserve your business?
I think the last seven or eight books that I wrote were done in LibreOffice Writer. I can't imagine ever going back to Word.

I think Rasufelle also uses LibreOffice. Is it a subscription, or do you actually get to (gasp!) buy the software?
I’ve been using Google Docs, since it didn’t require a subscription. But I’ll admit I’m not feeling very trusting of the company whose motto used to be ‘do no evil.’ I gather the Proton suite is getting much more robust, but I’ve only used them for email. I don’t know whether their document program is a good substitute.

computer troubles
Those are different matters touched in postings.
Dear Emma, you won't believe it, but Libre Office has this peculiar name because it is what it says: Libre, free, as in free beer. Donations are much appreciated, but you can download and install it without paying anything, not even with your name or other personal data. Every few months you will be notified about updates, which you can download and install, if you want - or not, if you don't.
I would never, ever use an office suite as SaaS, which essentially means, using it over the net, due to privacy concerns. Does not matter whether Google or M$. They store literally everything about you (storage space is comparatively cheap). Every mail, every text, every search ...whatever.
Which leads to the other point I would like to mention.
While I wholeheartedly agree with Bryony, that Linux is the way to go, I disagree that it will automatically protect you from malware.
True, it is much better than Windoze, but that's not difficult.
I can talk until my mouth gets tired, but people won't get it: The point is not just, what you use, but how you use it.
You do not want your mailbox full of spam? Do not give away your mail address.
You do not want malware on your box? Use a script blocker (much more important than antivirus-crap), an ad-blocker, avoid MS-outlook and similar junk but use a decent mail-program, do not visit dubious websites.
If you don't want people snooping around after you, do not use their software, including most "social media". On those you are not the customer, but the merchandise.
If you write your stuff with Google docs or Office365, do your websearches with Google search or Bing and then send your mail with google-mail or outlook, using edge or chrome, forget privacy, just forget it, because it is impossible to help you.
Sorry for the rant, but I have been advising people about safe computer use for more than 35 years now and every morning it feels as if I am starting at zero again and again.
