It's been a long time, but....
I've been away from posting for a quite a while. I was working on fantasy fiction for small publishers. It didn't go too badly, except monetary-wise. People out there don't seem to want to try out new authors. Also, small publishers can't do much advertising. Regardless, I now have three books in print under my real name. Three additional books have been accepted and are awaiting publication. Oh, there is a 4th book in the same state, but I've lost hope that the publisher is going to move on it. He's sat on it for almost 5 years now! Further, I've had three stories put into anthologies. I'm currently working on a collection of action short stories that I hope I can sell to one of my existing publishers. The rough drafts are done, but it will be still months of work polishing them for submission.
So, I'm no less busy now than I was back in 2021, I would really like to help get TWILIGHT polished while I still can. The clock is ticking.
As for TWILIGHT, author Aladdin wrote it about 20 years ago, but then he got a career job and had no time for fan fiction. He graciously let me read the rough draft and I thought it would be a crying shame if it was never presented to the public. I think Aladdin has really nailed down the personality of Mantra, the character originally created by comic writer Mike Barr. She's so quirky and so much fun, while still being a caring and brave as hell person.
Since the work I need to do on TWILIGHT is so extensive, and since Aladdin has been very supportive of the revision work I did three years back on WOUNDED WORLD, he has offered me the chance to take credit for being the cowriter of TWILIGHT, not just the editor. I'm as pleased as can be to add this great book to my resume.
TWILIGHT is a full novel. In its rough draft form it was even longer than WOUNDED WORLD and I don't think my draft will be much shorter, though I have been tightening the language wherever I think it warrants. I hope to post more than 1 chapter a month for a while, but with so much other work on my shoulders that might not always be possible. I'm going to be doing my best, though, to not put up less than 1 chapter monthly.
Working with Mantra is fun. The only thing not fun is that my stories engage so little in the way of comment. But I've been bemoaning that for years and after all this time, I don't think it's going to get any better. I wouldn't mind being surprised, though.
But let me say a little about the image that begins the story. It was created by one of those new AI Image-creating sites. I started out trying to make the image grass green and it was hard going to figure out how to do things. The pic is the 2nd one I did. I liked the first one, but the background was a problem and I couldn't find the tools to fix it. So I redid it from scratch. I did the house first and then I took the pic to a different site to "generatively fill" in Eden standing in front of it. There were some small flaws in the image then and so I had to take it more than one different site to find the tools to fix the flaws. It doesn't help that some of the sites work well one day and will let you down on another. There was one site that was supposed to be good for photo editing, but they always had a dumb tutorial pop up and block the workspace. No matter what I did, I couldn't get rid of the tutorial window, so I had to find yet another place to finish the job. There is a detail or two more that I would have liked to chang, but I couldn't spare the time. So, that's it for now. If anyone likes the picture or the story please tell me about it.
A Glossary for Chapter 1 of Twilight of the Gods
As the Malibu Ultraverse ended publication about 23 years ago, one cannot expect most readers to be versed in the background and terminology introduced into Malibu comics. For that reason, I am introducing a glossary which should help readers understand terms and concepts that figure in the adventure that Mantra has just embarked upon. An explanation of the important terms found in Chapter 1 follows:
Glossary for Chapter 1, Twilight of the Gods
Godwheel
The Godwheel is an artificial world with a unique design. It is build like a finger ring that that surrounds two suns. A life-supporting atmosphere is maintained for human beings and various alien species. The culture of the Godwheel peoples range from primitive to very advanced. Some societies are empowered by magic, some by science. The humans living on this vast world came from the planet Earth, kidnapped in prehistoric times to populate the Godwheel. Mantra has visited the Godwheel four times before this and has found it to be a place for grand and dangerous adventures. In general, she considers the Godwheel hectic, dangerous, and exhausting and prefers not to go there unnecessarily.
Multiverse
Multiverse theory suggests that our universe, with all its hundreds of billions of galaxies and almost countless stars, spanning tens of billions of light-years, may not be the only one. Instead, there may be an entirely different universe, distantly separated from ours — and another, and another. Indeed, there may be an infinity of universes, all with their own laws of physics, their own collections of stars and galaxies (if stars and galaxies can exist in those universes), and maybe even their own intelligent civilizations. It could be that our universe is just one member of a much grander, much larger multitude of universes: a multiverse.
Timekeepers
A race of beings originating on the Godwheel. The Timekeepers were created for this story by Aladdin. They command very advanced technology, the most important of which controls time, at least locally. They are charged with the responsibility of monitoring the timelines of the Multiverse and correcting anomalies that occur. In this story, Mantra meets the Timekeeper Gabriel, who appears to be human-like. This may be the natural appearance of the Timekeepers, or it may be an illusion or disguise that members of his race might use to mingle with human beings.
VIGOPS
To gather the immense amount of information they need to carry out their work, the Timekeepers use supercomputers called VIGOPS units. This word is an anagram that has no meaning in English. A VIGOPS unit is a memory bank. It uses intrusive technology to gather information about the Multiverse and its timelines. The Timekeepers are connected to one or more VIGOPS units and may draw the information they need from it to facilitate their duties. They seem to have a "wireless" connection to their VIGOPS unit that allows them access to the information it holds from far away, and even in a different period of time.
Zero-time
The technology of the Timekeepers allows them to create pockets of time that exist outside of natural time (also called Real-time.) These pockets are zones of limited size in which the passage of time can be slowed down to almost zero. Only persons with enabling technology can move about inside Zero-time. What is not touched or connected to the person is held frozen in time. This has certain strange effects, such as a dropped object does not fall. It hangs in midair. If one is short of time, a Timekeeper can enter into Zero-time to perform lengthy work or research and then emerge into "Real-time" with only microseconds having passed.
Thank you Christopher
It has been a while since I visited the world of Mantra; it is good to be back at last, and seeing your work.
