Dragon's Fire Chapter 58

Chapter 58: Distractions

School dragged on in a way that felt almost cruel. The hallways felt colder, the fluorescent lights harsher, every sound sharper than it should have been. The air itself seemed heavy and stale, pressing in on Yuqi from all sides. Even the colors of the posters and lockers felt washed out, as if the whole building was drained of life. Around her, the laughter and chatter of other students only made her feel more isolated, their energy clashing painfully against her own numb exhaustion. Each step she took echoed with a sense of distance, as if she were walking through a world made of glass, watching everything move but never able to touch it.

Every minute stretched longer than it should have, each second oozing by like honey, impossibly slow and relentless. The ticking clock in every classroom seemed louder, marking time that refused to move forward. Classes blurred together, the monotony making it hard to remember where one ended and the next began. Teachers talked, wrote on boards, assigned work—but none of it reached Yuqi. The world seemed to move in slow motion, voices warping and echoing, words losing meaning before they ever reached her ears. She watched the hands of the clock crawl, convinced that hours were passing when only a few minutes had gone by. All of it passed over her like distant noise, something she was physically present for but completely detached from.

Her mind was somewhere else. She stared at her desk, but her thoughts spun far from the classroom—circling the coin hidden in her pocket, the shimmer of its surface, the weight of the spell she’d memorized over and over. She replayed every word of the ritual in her mind, searching for any possible mistake. Images of her father flickered in her imagination: sometimes a face she’d never seen, sometimes just a shadowy silhouette, always just out of reach. The future hovered in front of her, full of trembling hope and sharp anxiety. Would the coin work? Would she finally get answers? Her heart thudded with a mixture of dread and longing, her mind leaping ahead to tonight, to the possibility that everything could change.

She sat in the gym, barely aware of the movement around her. The squeak of sneakers on polished wood, the echo of bouncing basketballs, the shouts of classmates—it all blurred together into a dull hum. Her mind wandered, drifting far from the game unfolding in front of her. She found herself staring at the ceiling, tracing patterns in the lights, letting her thoughts float untethered. She imagined what it would feel like to finally hold a real conversation with her father, to see the coin glow with magic in her own hands. Little flashes of memory and hope flickered through her head: the words of the spell, the questions she would ask, the answers she might not be ready for. She barely noticed her teammates calling her name, her body moving on autopilot while her mind replayed every possibility tonight could bring.

The questions circled endlessly, each one feeding into the next. What would happen when she used it? Would it actually work? Would she feel anything—joy, relief, disappointment, fear? What would he be like? Would he recognize her? Would he be proud, or angry, or nothing at all? Why had he never come for her? Was there a reason he’d stayed away, or was it something about her? Even the happy possibilities felt dangerous, fragile. Would she finally feel whole, or would she just end up more lost than before?

“Yuqi.”

She didn’t respond.

“Yuqi.”

Nothing.

The world continued without her.

A sharp thud cut through the noise—

The sudden impact jolted Yuqi out of her drifting thoughts. Sapphire had appeared beside her, swift and steady, intercepting a basketball that would have struck Yuqi in the head. Sapphire’s arm was outstretched, her expression fierce and protective, the ball ricocheting from her hand and rolling away across the court.

Yuqi blinked, her vision snapping back into focus. For a heartbeat, all the blurred sounds and colors sharpened, and her eyes landed on Sapphire—her friend’s face vivid and close, concern etched in every line. The steady gaze and the reassuring touch on her shoulder felt like a tether to reality. But just as quickly, Yuqi’s focus slipped again, the world starting to blur at the edges as her mind threatened to drift. Around them, students stared in surprise, but that brief moment of clarity, with Sapphire at its center, lingered like a spark before fading.

Students nearby were staring.

Someone let out a low whistle.

Yuqi just… blinked again. Her face stayed blank, her eyes unfocused, as if she couldn't quite register what had happened. She hadn’t even flinched. There was no gasp, no startled movement—just a slow, almost mechanical response, her body barely acknowledging the near miss. It was as if her mind and reflexes were moving through molasses, unable to catch up to the world around her.

Sapphire stepped directly in front of her, concern clear in her expression. “Yuqi?”

Still nothing.

Yuqi’s gaze drifted slightly past her, unfocused, like she was still halfway somewhere else.

Sapphire frowned.

She waved a hand in front of Yuqi’s face.

No reaction.

“…seriously?”

A few students nearby started murmuring, watching the exchange with curiosity. Some exchanged confused glances, and a couple of voices rose in nervous laughter. Yuqi, normally so composed—even intimidating at times—just stood there, completely disconnected from reality, and it unsettled them. One student nudged another and whispered, "Is she okay?" Others watched with wide eyes, expecting a reaction that never came. The silence and lack of response made the moment feel even stranger, a ripple of unease passing through the group as they realized just how far away Yuqi seemed, even while standing right there.

Sapphire’s expression shifted, a mix of concern and mild annoyance.

“Okay, that’s enough.”

Before Yuqi could even begin to process what was happening, Sapphire reached up, cupped her face, and pulled her into a deep kiss. The sensation was electric—a sudden warmth flooding through Yuqi, clearing the fog from her mind. The world, once distant and muffled, seemed to snap into sharp focus. Sapphire’s lips were soft and insistent, her hands gentle but steady, holding Yuqi in the here and now. For that moment, Yuqi felt every heartbeat, every breath, the rush of reality pouring back in. The kiss was more than affection; it was a lifeline, tethering Yuqi firmly to the present.

The world snapped back all at once. For a split second, Yuqi felt every detail with startling clarity—the thump of her heart, the warmth lingering on her lips, the faint scent of Sapphire’s shampoo. As her eyes widened, the gym's colors seemed brighter, the echoes sharper, and every face around her came into sudden focus. She could feel the cool air on her skin, the polished wood beneath her sneakers, the collective hush of the students watching.

Yuqi’s eyes widened slightly before she melted into the kiss for a brief moment, instinct taking over where her thoughts had failed her. As reality settled in, she became aware of the weight in her body, the sensation of being truly present for the first time that day. When Sapphire pulled back, Yuqi blinked rapidly, her focus finally locking in, her gaze meeting Sapphire’s with a dawning sense of awareness.

For the first time, she could actually track the world around her—Sapphire’s concerned face, the gym, the basketball rolling to a stop, the ripple of whispers from the other students. She drew a shaky breath, feeling her thoughts gather and settle as the fog of distraction lifted.

“Sapphire…?”

Her voice was soft, a little disoriented, but she was finally there. She looked around, noticing the gym, the students staring, the basketball slowly rolling to a stop across the floor.

“…how out of it was I?” she asked.

Sapphire couldn’t help the small chuckle that escaped her. “You didn’t respond to me calling your name or waving my hand in front of your face. I even tried snapping my fingers, but you were completely gone. You just stared right through me.” She tilted her head slightly, her tone softening with concern. “You also almost got beamed by a basketball. If I hadn’t stepped in, it would have hit you square in the head. You didn’t even flinch—you were so far away, Yuqi. It was like nothing could reach you until I…” She trailed off, a blush touching her cheeks, “…well, until I did what I had to.”

Yuqi closed her eyes, letting out a slow breath as the weight of that settled in. “…yeah, that sounds about right.”

She lifted a hand, resting it lightly over Sapphire’s where it still lingered near her face.

“Thank you,” she said quietly. “For getting me out of my head.”

Sapphire’s expression softened immediately.

“I know tonight is really important,” she said, her voice gentler now. “And I hope everything works.” Her thumb brushed lightly along Yuqi’s cheek. “But stay with me for the rest of the day.”

Yuqi opened her eyes again, this time fully present.

For the first time in what felt like hours, she really saw Sapphire—not just as a comforting presence on the edge of her awareness, but as someone vivid, warm, and real. She noticed the worry still lingering in Sapphire’s eyes, the gentle way she held herself, the fierce loyalty that always shone through.

She realized how much Sapphire had been her anchor, not just today but so many times before, pulling her back from the brink of spiraling thoughts. In that moment, Yuqi understood how much she needed Sapphire—not as a distraction, but as a lifeline, someone who refused to let her disappear. The concern. The steadiness. The quiet strength. The way Sapphire always pulled her back when she started drifting too far—this was what kept her tethered.

A small, genuine smile formed, gratitude and affection mingling in her gaze.

“…okay,” Yuqi said softly.

She reached down, lacing her fingers with Sapphire’s for a brief moment before letting go as the teacher called for everyone to get back into position.

The gym suddenly sharpened her awareness: the polished wood floor cool beneath her sneakers, the buzz of the overhead lights, the faint smell of sweat and rubber in the air. She noticed the cluster of students resuming their game, the whistle, the basketball bouncing on the court. Everything felt more immediate, more real—no longer distant or muffled.

This time, when Yuqi moved—when she joined her classmates in the next drill, when she made eye contact with Sapphire across the gym—she was actually there, her body and mind finally working together. Each breath anchored her, each sound and sight a gentle reminder that she was present, grounded, and not alone.

The rest of the day didn’t magically become easier. Yuqi found herself fighting the same battles in her mind over and over—her thoughts looping back to the coin, to her father, to all the questions that refused to let go. Every class, every hallway, every quiet moment brought the same swirl of worries and what-ifs, pulling at her focus like an undertow. Her chest would tighten, her vision would blur just a little, and she’d have to remind herself to breathe. The urge to drift away, to retreat into her head, never fully left. But now, there was something grounding her, keeping her anchored to the present.

Every time her focus started to slip, she felt it—

Sapphire’s presence.

A glance.

A small nudge.

A quiet reminder.

And each time, Yuqi came back just a little faster.

Yuqi walked out of the gym, the evening sun spilling through the windows and painting the hallway with gold. Her worries hadn’t vanished, but they felt lighter with Sapphire beside her, a steady presence at her side. Each step toward the unknown was still daunting—but for the first time in days, Yuqi believed she could meet whatever came next. The world was still wide and uncertain, but now she carried a quiet hope, tethered by the hand she’d held and the promise that she wouldn’t have to face it alone.
