Waltzing Matilda - 2011 Gabycon short story
The contrast between Warsop and Drew/Gaby's home shows the difference in the cultures. And the facts about Drew/Gaby's health hits a bullseye.

Interesting
With grovelling apologies to Maddy, I haven't read the Gaby series in full. I have read each of Angharad's stories about him/her, and what comes through to me is that those tend to be darker, more despairing than Maddy's own. I understand the reasons for the differing style (I hope) but this one, for me, captures well the pain of someone being railroaded somewhere they never wanted to go.
Drew / Gaby
I loved this story Angharad ,it is the first time I've read a Gaby story and really got into it ,I think Drew has already accepted that he is going be a girl in the end because every one around him/her are going to keep pushing the envelope because he/she already looks like a girl anyway .

Realistic look at where Drew's headed
... and it is with hope that all his/her experiences in Maddy's scriblings will have greatly eased his/her transition to what this moment heralds for the rest of Drew's life.
The good news is that there is hope Gaby can have a fulfilling life if even the worst will come to pass.

I understand how Drew feels.
He wants desperately to be the boy (or man) that he's always thought of himself as. The thing is, in reality, she is a girl. Once she comes to understand and accept that, much of her anguish would be over, but then, without that central conflict, there is little story to write about. Every story needs some kind of conflict.
I wonder if Maddy is still a bit smitten with her cousin, which could be why she drops Gaby into situations where she's uncomfortable?
I am so anxious for the release of the next book!
Ang, this story is beautiful. You handle Maddy's characters so well that I'm very comfortable accepting this into the `world of Gaby/Drew that I have in my head. That said, is this story canon? Will these revelations affect the character's in Maddy's work? I know that Maddy approves of your use of her characters, so I rather hope that it really is a part of Drew's world.
This was very enjoyable, and I dearly hope to see more of Drew/Gaby soon.

I know that's...
I know that's the general feeling - that Gaby is who Drew REALLY is... But, I can't help wondering if that's truly the case here. After all, Drew is more aware of this boy/girl trans/etc. stuff than I was at HIS/HER age. Heck, I was in my twenties before I was willing to believe that what I'd been brought up to believe was wrong (and I wasn't crazy).
Yes, Drew (Gaby) passes - as a girl, and doesn't pass as a boy. But that's on the physical layer... What's inside? There seems to be at least SOME boy in there.

Ok. I will tell you I
Ok. I will tell you I enjoyed the story, as I usually enjoy most of your writings. I had to come back and do that as my evening was hectic and I barely had time to read it before having to leave, and I was a tiny bit late since I wanted to finish it. I did sent a Kudo, but that is obviously not enough.
So, yes I enjoyed the story. It was well written. What I don't always get is if the fanfics have anything to do with the direction Maddy is taking the story, or they are indeed just fantasy written for the way you would like to see the story line be in the original Gabyverse.

CaroL
yes, I agree
nothing in any of Maddy's stories has said Drew was non functional as a male, just small and intersexed.
did this other part come from the your fanfic, I have not had a chance to read that one yet, I was going to start part 1 after I caught up to current on Bike. I'm only 180 back now.
don't give up writing something you enjoy. overall I liked the story, i'm just not sure where it fits yet.
thanks for posting it
I'll try to answer that
As a fanfic author, I'd have to say 'I doubt it'. However, it is Maddy's universe we're all playing in ... so she's free to develop her own take on an ideas she might have come across in a fanfic. If there proves to be a similarity between a fanfic and cannon, it's Maddy's doing. At least that's my story, an' I'm sticking with it.... :)
Generally, the 'Gaby' fanfics are stories that have sprung from someone's imagination, using the characters as set up in Maddy's Gabyverse. They may be inadvertantly triggered by an event that Maddy herself writes about or they can spring from an outside influence. For instance ... back in 2005, Maddy was then in the midst of writing Book 4 of cannon and I first started to form what became the "Notes of a Journey" trilogy by asking a simple 'what-if' question in response to an event first suggested in the closing chapters of Book 3.

set the timing
it might help for a note saying the time frame and if this story fits from " the name of the fanfic, or the Gaby book "
I have not read all of the fanfic's but most, they go in several direction.
Fair 'nuff
In canon, Book 3 ended just before New Year 2004 and Book 4 covered the early few months of 2004. I think Book 7 takes place in 2005/6.
The afore mentioned fanfics that Angharad penned ('Drew Goes South', 'Crossing The Line' and 'Whatever Next') all seem to occur prior - possibly the summer prior - to the American kids visting Warsop ... so somewhere around Book 2 & Book 3 of canon, I should think.
As a comparison, my trilogy covers the period from just after Christmas 2003 to July 2013 - a bit outside of canon's current timeline. My followup fanfic, 'Never My Love' covers two weeks in Dec. 2013 - again outside of canon's timeline. Gaby's age in my fanfics, goes from just-about-to-turn-14 to the middle of her 23rd year.
In canon, she's still 15 - after a little more than 1yr in Germany. (In canon and my trilogy, we both have the Bond's moving to Germany in Gaby's 14th year.)
In 'Waltzing Matilda', Angharad's given no specific timeline, but it's obviously at a point between the Bond's move to Germany (Book 5 of canon)and the earlier 'cooling of relations' between Gaby and Maddy while visiting the States (Book 4 of canon). However, since she's still riding with the Apollinaris Youth Program, this should put her somewhere between 14 (yr she moved to Germany) and 18 (she can still ride with the Apollinaris Youth Project in the U19 catagory) and by my figurin' ... that put's the timeline of this return visit to Warsop, between 2004 & 2008/2009.
Unfortunately, a puzzle piece that might narrow the timeline down even further, is missing from the Gaby saga ... that being the duration of Drew's involvment with British Cycling. In Book 4 of canon, Maddy has Jenny telling 'Gaby' that being associated with the Apollinaris Youth Project, wouldn't prevent him from also being associated with British Cycling's own youth development scheme and like the Apollinaris project, I'd assume participation in the BC youth project would end once an individual was too old to compete at the U19 level.
As for Angharad's latest tale fitting in with canon, I don't think it does or really ever will. Just as I presented the character's differently than Maddy had, with my own plot deveations away from canon, in my trilogy ... so Angharad has treated her rendition of Maddy's character's differently than Maddy, herself ... as well as provided her own spin on a small glimpse of Maddy's 'Gabyverse'. It's that different POV what makes a Gaby fanfic a fanfic as opposed to just another chapter in Maddy's canon.
All of the above is solely my guess-work based upon the various 'Gaby' writings.

book 8
I need to read it again but I think she mentioned in book 8 spending some time in the coming summer back in england working with British Cycling, so that not given up yet.
your stories were very straight forward on the time frame. Angharad's trilogy I haven't read yet, its on the list.
Another great gaby story
Another great gaby story gives us a really good look inside drews/gaby's head. Great job :D.
Thanks Angharad,
ALISON
'you draw your characters so well and it is hard not to feel for Drew/Gaby while Maddy is tipping
buckets on her/him.So difficult to know which camp you are in,but the inevitable looms.

I love your Gaby fanfics,
I love your Gaby fanfics, Ang. Thank you for this new one!
Does Bonzi help with these, or is he strictly a "Bike" kind of cat?

Bonzi
I think Bonzi is a "Bike" cat and doesn't want to cut into the snooze time to help here. But I do wonder if Lady Catherine secretly helps here, so she can read them to her kids at bedtime.
Interesting take...
Interesting take on "going home"... It certainly can be difficult... Even for people that don't suffer from Drew's malady. The body conspiring against HIS wishes. I sometimes wonder how happy Drew really is - in your variation on the world. I don't mean situationally happy - Drew does have fun. I mean in general. It really doesn't sound, to me, like Drew's really reconciled to the situation. If Drew's really a HE, under all that, it'd really SUCK to be in his situation.
Thanks for sharing this with us.

Thumbs Up!
Quite entertaining, and as I've not yet read book eight yet (waiting for it to be on big book rather than 4) something of a spoiler, not that I mind much. Seems that Maddy was firmly placed Drew in the Gabby ring and is still rather self centered. Drew may be right in avoiding her in the future, or at least until a final decision is made in regard to Drew's gender.

Excellent story telling Ang. It is a great fanfic view into the heart and mindset of a great character. You have a great handle on your view of the hero/ine. I so often want to get ahold of cousin Maddy and slap some sense into her. She treats poor Drew so badly, even she might be miles ahead and trying to do her version of the right thing.
Waltzing Matilda??
You stole our defacto national anthem. That aside, waltzing is walking not biking.
Seriously, I enjoyed the story although a "G'day mate" from Justin might have helped :)
