The rest of their journey down to Devon was done in relative silence. It reinforced the reality that Jacques was going to have to do a lot of explaining to do later that evening.

The sun was still high in the sky when Jacques drove the Van up the track to their home.

“Why don’t we leave unloading until morning?” suggested Jacques.

“Good idea. I’m bushed,” replied Vivienne in a firm voice.

Vivienne had no real idea exactly how long she’d been sitting outside the Cottage but it must have been a while. The sun was starting to go down behind the trees. The warmth of the day had long since passed.

A few goose-pimples had appeared on Vivienne's arms. These were the spur for her to stand up and go inside the cottage. It was marginally warmer inside but Vivienne was still cold inside. All she could think of… ‘where was Jacques?’ rapidly followed by 'I hope he is all right'.
She’d been inside the cottage for well over half an hour when she heard a sound from outside. It was the sound of Ducks and Geese quacking away. Something or someone had disturbed them.

Vivienne’s return to London from Paris was rather strange. It was strange in that she actually felt rather naked without the corset wrapped tightly around her body. Even after just a few days, it had started to be part of her. Then there were the brand new two suitcases that held all her purchases. If her daughters could see inside, then they’d probably keel over on the spot. She had spent quite a lot of money but Vivienne had plenty and it wasn’t as if she’d be going shopping in Paris every day or London for much longer.

Sixty is not that old - Part 15

The three-and-a-half-hour journey from Totnes to Portsmouth allowed the two women to begin the process of getting to know each other.

At first, Gabrielle was a little defensive towards her father.

Then Vivienne said,
"As I said when we were back in Totnes, I've just sold my home in London. In a few weeks, I will have the equivalent of more than three million Euro in my bank. I'm not after any money that Jacques may or may not have but this is not about that."

In my story, "Hot and Steamy", one of the characters is a former Industrial Steam Loco called 'Lucy'.
https://bigclosetr.us/topshelf/book-page/82210/hot-and-steamy
Little did I know when I wrote the tale that there is a small steam loco called Lucy residing on the NYMR (North Yorkshire Moors Railway). This Lucy is a formed Brussels Tramway Loco.

Strange coincidence or what?

May I wish each and everyone at BC a happy Christmas and hope that 2021 turns out to be a lot better than this.

The arrival of the supposed ‘Downsizing Experts’ the following day proved to be rather an anti-climax. They talked the talk but didn’t really persuade Vivienne that the services that they offered were what she really needed.

Their estimates of the costs for their services based upon their inspection of her home and garden made Vivienne gasp with surprise.

“That is an awful lot. It seems rather excessive,” she said to one of the three companies.

"Ja… Jacques? What are you doing here?" said a very startled and surprised Vivienne after they'd almost bumped into each other on 'The Strand'.

He smiled back at her. Any worries that she might have had just disappeared in an instant. His smile did that to her. Again!

"Meeting you," he replied.

Once Vivienne had gotten over feeling so foolish, a silly old woman and a dozen other even more derogatory things she suddenly felt a little lost. This sort of thing was all new to her. Back in London, her life had been framed by routine. Walk Betty, go to work, come home, walk Betty and go to bed. Rinse and repeat every day with a slight variation at the weekend.

Standing there with nature alive all around her made her realise that she was very much out of her comfort zone.

The sun was just poking its head above the horizon as Vivienne left home the next morning. She had high hopes for the weekend despite not having anywhere to stay for the next few days. The traffic was light at that early hour. It was just before 05:45 when she reached the start of the M3 close to Kempton Park Racecourse. The battery gauge on the dash told her that the battery in her car would get her to the charger at the Supermarket in Wincanton just as she’d planned. She hoped that she could get a late breakfast while the car was also fed but with electrons rather than her choice of Sausage, Bacon, Eggs and Hash Browns all washed down with a large cup of tea.

Vivienne met with Verity late the next day at her offices on Victoria Street. They’d been at Boarding School together and had become firm friends when they both got struck down with Measles at the same time. Being the sole occupants of a Boarding School Sick-bay over the Easter holidays was no fun so they’d gotten up to all sorts of mischief together. That bond had lasted until Vivienne had gotten married. Verity had been her Maid of Honour at her wedding to Rex.

Vivienne had been nagged by the thought of some dark secret or secrets that Jacques was hiding refused to go away. His good looks and charming personality were tempered by this as yet unanswered question. She preferred to think that someone like him could not be all bad.
This was, of course, complete and utter bollocks naturally… but it sounded rather nice to her.

The Photographer from the Estate Agency, a still wet behind the ears youngster named Neil Thomas, finished packing up his gear and then left Vivienne alone. A job that should have taken under an hour had taken three hours. For some unfathomable reason, he insisted on using a full studio flash rig even in the Bathroom where there really wasn’t the room to swing a cat let alone all the kit that he’d brought with him. From what little he’d said during the visit, he was clearly more used to taking pictures of the very large houses that only the mega rich of Hampstead could afford. Still, it was at their cost not hers. If she wasn’t happy with the promotion material she could take her business to another agency.

Vivienne’s not so good day wasn’t over. At a little after seven that evening the front door bell rang.

As she entered the hallway, Vivienne could see two figures through the frosted glass on the door. It was either someone trying to convert her to their religion or it was her beloved daughters. For once, she really hoped that the former had chosen to try their luck with her rather than her daughters.

If it was the latter then it was to be expected given the virtual deluge of calls and messages that had been sent in her direction since the phone call with her daughter just before Betty's Funeral.

The ‘pet funeral’ people came and collected Betty later that day. It was hard for Vivienne to say goodbye to her lovable pet. As they prepared her body for transportation Vivienne realised that they’d not spent one night apart since she’d first came into her life almost nine years before. It really would be strange without the ‘Madness of Queen Betty’ to keep her entertained.

The people that came for her could well have been undertakers. They were dressed in black and spoke reverently in hushed tones about Betty and what Vivienne wanted done with her. After some discussion, Vivienne agreed to be there for Betty's final journey in two days’ time. She expressed that wish as it only felt fitting that Betty deserved a proper send off as thanks for the part she had played in her life these past years.

“That’s the last of the washing on Betty. Want to go for a walk?”

Her lovable companion wagged her tail and looked up at her mistress with doleful eyes.

Vivienne smiled back at her companion.

“Ok then. Go find your lead.”

Betty took off like a rocket only to completely miss the lead that was hanging over the bannister at the bottom of the stairs and thumped into the front door. She bounced off, turned around and grabbed the lead on her way back to her.

“I can see that someone is very happy to be home again aren't you Betty?”

All was quiet in the house. The Sun had risen well over an hour earlier. The hum of London grew as the city started a new day.

There were two occupants of the house. For one of them this was a day to celebrate. For the other, the prospect of walkies, rabbits to chase and food was normal.

In a bedroom at the front of the three-storey terraced house, Vivienne Carter was wide awake. Today was her sixtieth birthday, plus it was the first day of what she’d been calling her ‘afterlife’. She’d just retired from her job as very senior official at the HMRC in the ‘Collections Department’. The previous day which had been a rather sad occasion. Vivienne, could have carried on working for at least six more years until she qualified for a state pension but she’d had enough of work, commuting and putting up with the incompetence of other people for far too long so she'd decided several months before to call it a day when she turned sixty years of age.

When Maxine returned home from the Hospice, she sat still for a while. The carers were busy cleaning the Bedroom where Adrian had slept for the past two months. The medical equipment … The medical equipment was all being boxed up to be sent back to the rental company. It all seemed so final. She just had to accept that Adrian was not coming home again. Now it was up to her to run her life and the business. For the first time since she’d gone to that interview with Sally Jameson, she felt truly alone. She mentally sighed to herself. There would be many more days like this in the days, weeks and months to come.

Maxine sat at her desk and gazed into space for god knows how long thinking about everything and nothing at the same time.

I left the Office still smiling and shaking my head at what Sue-Ellen had described to me. I didn’t want to tell anyone else about it until I had seen it for myself. Kelly tried to divert me to tell me when the ATF team were arriving but I waved her away and said that I’d update her as soon as possible.

The images of what Sue-Ellen had described to me over the phone just brought back memories of watching ‘Wacky Races’ on TV as a child.

Those images turned out to be almost correct.

Walt slowly got out of the truck and sat on the floor. I didn’t need to tell him to keep his legs straight but crossed below the knee.

After leaving Maxine’s home in Reigate, Kim travelled by train back to Royston where her car was parked. Absentmindedness was a family trait that she’d worked hard to eliminate. Kim wondered if the emotional trials and tribulations of the recent few weeks was finally catching up with her.

Kim finally left the hotel in what was for her, a rather odd mood. She wasn't sure what to do next. For someone who was generally so sure of herself this mood/feeling was becoming far too common to be good for her.

The weather wasn’t playing ball either. A brisk north easterly wind was bringing rain in off the North Sea. It was decidedly chilly and a far cry from the lovely sun of the previous day.

She was glad to get in her car and start the engine to warm up the interior. After a few minutes, she switched it off. Once again, she had no idea what to do next or where to go.

Even after a good night’s sleep, Kim’s resolution about the validity of her plan for the day ahead had not changed one little bit. Claire’s visit had actually strengthened her resolve not to leave without at least firing a few salvoes of her own. As she lay in bed that fateful Wednesday morning, she wondered how much she’d get for her home after paying off the mortgage. It was clear now that she was done with the newspaper industry. Of that she was certain. Proper Journalism was dead and just waiting to be buried and the current newspaper business model was on its last legs anyway. Unless you were an online scandal and gossip sheet there was little future in the industry.

Wednesday came around far too soon for Kim.

It seemed that she had not stopped for more than an hour or two since Saturday when she arrived at her London home late on Tuesday evening. The only thing to greet her was her answering machine. It told her that there were twenty messages. The ‘time remaining’ counter said ‘0’. There could have been more but... She smiled for a moment. That was tiny compared to the absolute deluge that had been left on her mobile phone.

Oh my word (and lots of them)

With nothing better to do... I started working out how many words I have published here.
I had this itch that needed scratching.

I've not finished adding them up yet and it is getting close 900,000 and will be well over ONE Million by the end of the year. I have one story that is over 80,000 words long ready to publish.

I will have been posting here 10 years in November. If anyone had said to me that in ten years I would have written and posted around a million words then I would have told them that they are mad, stark raving bonkers.

“Welcome to the company Kim,” said Brian as Kim walked into the building the following Friday Morning.

Kim was a little startled to see the Managing Director, Brian West sitting at the reception desk.

He saw her the look of bewilderment on her face.

The Editor had called one of his reporters in to see him.

“Kim, very well done for your last story it went down very well. The reader feedback was very positive.”

“Thanks Sandy. It was touch and go for a bit but I got to the bottom of it in the end.”

Sandy Wynn, the Editor smiled back at his reporter.

“Are you ready for a new assignment?”

“As I’ll ever be? What is it all about?”

Sandy leaned back in his chair with the tips of the fingers of both hands touching.

The Summer Ball - Part 2 - You can't hide

26 months later, September – At a bar in a small coastal town in Northern California.
The place was fairly quiet as it was early on a Monday evening. It would get quite rowdy later as the ‘Dallas Cowboys’ were playing at home that night against the 49’ers and the game would be shown on the big screen. Naturally, this being California, most of the locals supported the 49’ers.

Two people were working behind the bar preparing for the night ahead when the door opened and in walked a tall Blonde woman wearing a white blouse, black tight leather trousers and black ankle boots.

“Hello Sean. I’ll have a G & T please but hold the T.”

The barman looked up from the ‘shot’ glass he was drying and saw Ingrid standing in front of him. His face dropped. To him, she looked the spitting image of Marylin Monroe in the ‘Seven Year Itch’. Another words, totally stunning and totally out of place for the clientele of ‘Big Jake’s Famous Bar & Grill’.

The Summer Ball - A night to forget

This is an oldie from 2010/2011. The original ending was very abrupt so I’ve updated it quite a bit.

Company Dinner/Dances are events to hate for the vast majority of single, unattached men. When these things come around, they are faced with three questions which may or may not become problems later in their career.

Firstly, do they get a date for the evening and risk becoming the office gossip for weeks and/or making a real fool of themselves on the dance floor with their multitude of big left feet?

Or secondly, do they say, ‘To hell with this’ and adjourn to the bar with the other poor male sods once the formal part of the evening is done and dusted and get totally ‘rat arsed’.

Adrian took hold of Maxine’s hands and said,

“It is time,” he said softly.

That was all he needed to say. Both Cliff and Maxine knew what he meant in an instant.

The revelation that Adrian’s life was about to change for the worse shocked Maxine right to her core.

Maxine fled to her room and cried her eyes out. It seemed that her world was crumbling around her. First her mother becoming a lesbian and now Adrian. What would be next.

The Forsythe Saga

I have one more part of the story ready for publication which will appear here next weekend. But as with the best laid plans and all that, I need to get two more pieces published (one is written and one is still to see the light of day) before I get to around part 8 of my next story which currently has a working title of 'Vivienne' but may change. Maxine plays a part in that story but I need to introduce a character that plays a major role in 'Vivienne' otherwise, the 'continuation error junkies' out there will see a huge problem with the latter story.

Adrian was away in Scotland doing on what he called ‘a fact-finding mission’, which left just Cliff and Maxine in the Office when the phone rang.

Maxine saw the caller ID and answered it.
“Oh, hello Mum. What’s up?”

“Why am I asking? Didn’t we speak for nearly an hour at the weekend?”

“No. I don’t think I am busy tomorrow night. It could work out pretty well as I’m due at a meeting in Devon the following day.”

“No, he won’t mind. He’s busy with a different project in Scotland.”

“What time and where and why?”

There is a saying that goes something along the lines of ‘The best laid plans of mice and men’. There is another one that thanks to Monty Python, has become common place. That is ‘No one expects the Spanish Inquisition’.
No one in the business world expected Frankie Mangan to do what he did a few weeks after the meeting between Garth, Maxine and Adrian.

Maxine was alone the Reigate House. Adrian and Cliff were away in Sheffield looking at a prospective deal. She was dealing with paperwork and the accounts. This was the one part of being in business that she hated but it needed to be done on a regular basis. All the businesses that Lorelei had invested in made regular financial reports. These needed to be collated and various profit and loss projections made. This, along with the expenditure of the business allowed them to see a picture of how things were doing with the business.

Adrian had been very patient with her when he introduced her to the intricacies of doing the books for the many different companies that she and Adrian controlled. What was hard for her at the start was getting to grips with the different requirements of other countries had for business accounting and reporting.

What Every Woman Wants (is a decent hairdresser)

The dust had finally settled from the purchase of the Hotel in Devon and the fallout from the fraud that many of the top people had been undertaking at the Hotel Chain. The new owners, Geo-Stay Inc had gone to the high court in an attempt to get the sale nullified but it was pointed out that Geo-Stay had almost two months of access to the fake books and their people nor their business advisors had found the errors in the accounting process. They tried and failed to sue their advisors who pointed out that they had told Geo-Stay in writing that the books looked dodgy and that they should walk away. That failed and left them with another very large legal bill to settle. It seemed that the American Company had forgotten that in the UK, the loser pays the other sides costs by default.
