I've "danced the sticks" too many times ...
... Not for ankles, but for other stuff.
My good(?) luck was that all my breaks were for orthopedic corrections, so no "collateral damage" that a fall or a car-hit would cause.
If they have you on crutches -
Tripod.
Always be a tripod.
Crutches to the sides (where else?) and your good leg either behind or ahead.
Don't be afraid to "swing through" (between) the crutches with the good leg. Don't 'panic' and stop with the good leg half-way thru. You lose your tripod, and your stability is nearly zero. Not a good thing.
If there are stairs in your life... Well, you might be happier going up and down on your butt.

Never Good
The last thing anyone wants or deserves is broken bones. Takes a while to heal and of course the inconvenience to it all. Crutches are a pain and always in the way getting in and out of a vehicle, house, or bathroom.
Get an apron, the old fashion kind with a big pocket to carry everything in so your hands are free. I can't recommend the knee crutch where your leg is strapped in and your lower leg sticks out behind. Basically walking on the knee but that much leg sticking out behind is worse than normal crutches. Never had one of the smaller utility elec transporters but some of the vets I am around has them. Slow movers for sure.
Lots of different kinds of crutches, hope you find some that fit your need for mobility.
