What is that metaphor, or is it a simile. Such skullduggery, but it might work out to the better. Then again it might not. Wait until she's figured it out.

Christmas Eve ...
I know this was a one off, and it is quite nice, thank you. I am sat here listening to Handel's Messiah. I tried a bit of Vivaldi but it felt to stuffy for me. Perhaps it shall grow on me?
Much peace

Try
the Nulla in mundo sung by Emma Kirkby, she has such a pure voice, it's amazing. The Gloria is also very good and certainly not stuffy.

Ang, charming tale even given the conduct of mom & ... REVISED
REVISED.
My intent in these comments is NOT to be critical of the tale nor its author.
It is only to express some of the feelings it elicited and is by no means compressive.
I MUST say I very much LOVE this story and applaud Ang for writing it.
A short story like this necessarily makes it hard to give the reader every clue to the motivations of the main characters.
Thus we must use our imagination .
None of us will *read* the same story. ALL interpretations are valid.
Bravo to Ang for providing this Christmas Eve treat.
I quote,
>>
His mother had been delighted that he was going to get a good education from a such a high status school but wondered what would happen if or when his voice began to break. She’d confided this to her sister, a doctor in nearby Whitney, who gave her some pills to give to him when he reached age twelve. He was still taking them unaware they were preventing his puberty, although he did wonder why his contemporaries all seemed more hirsute and spotty than he was.
>>
So no matter the accolades the BOY gets he has been cruelly used by his mother.
Short story so we don't know if he has transgender issues. But unless he really was/is a female in his mind she has done him GREAT harm.
Can he ever be a man?
Is he now sterile or practically so?
Can he ever grow unto his genetic potential or will he always be slight, short and effeminate in build and voice?
To assure her child a great education she may have sold his future as a man. Without his consent or knowledge.
I noticed she reacted when he mentioned he should see a doctor to find out why he was so far behind his contemporaries as a male.
In effect I fear she has made him a modern castrati.
Nice tale. Not so nice mom. And that doctor should lose her license. Maybe both spend some time in prison for child abuse?
See, you must have wrote it well, Ang. I CARE for the child and want to go boo hiss at the mom and her co-conspirators.
John in Wauwatosa
REVISED. See what a well written tale, even a very short one, can illicit in responses from its readers?

Go on
you like to hiss and boo at my stories anyway!
Merry Christmas to you and your cats.

Poor negotiation
He should have negotiated for a 128GB Ipad Air 2 with all the trimmings. Given there current agreement he could just get the base line 16GB with only WiFi. Or if he wanted to go to college a retina mac pro 13 inch with all the trimmings for going to his classes.

It came upon a Christmas ...
Greetings
Thank you for the story, however, I hope there are not parents who really treat their children in such a way without considering all the implications. Though there are some children who plainly make their opinion known about how they wish to grow up.

This Is Good - Please remember it's FICTION!
Angharad is one of the most respected writers that there is, sure this story has parts that upset people but get real folks this is Fiction and damn good writing at that.
When the people say that they hope parents like that don't exist remember female genitalia mutation this is condoned by parents as is forced marriage for girls as young as 10 or 12 all condoned by parents. And please don't say that this only happens in third world countries it happens is the so called civilised western countries.
I am setting myself up for demonisation but Angharad is worth it.
Thanks Angharad
Thanks
You show us a person that try to do right by them self despite what life throw at them.
Yes some complain about the actions of some, they just need to wake up and read the paper, look at the TV to see a lot worse.
Adam/Eve Christmas the star of the tale, is a charm to read about, thanks
Big Hugs tmf
Happy Holiday to All
Fantastic Story
I loved it, once again you've produced an excellent piece of work. Thank you.

Interesting start
Most stories have the boy going in blindly and not objecting. Adam knew what was going on, except for the fact that his mother was feeding him the blockers. He even has concerns about how he is developing.
It wasn't clear to me if Eve would have been boarding at Ms. Moore's college or living at home. If he accepted the opportunity, there would be the question of how he would continue to be dosed with the blockers, considering the fact that he didn't know that he was receiving them. Exploring how he would react to that revelation would be good too.
It made sense that Adam would agree to be Eve on a temporary basis. What boy wouldn't make that kind of mercenary decision if he knew that it would remain a secret?
Will we see more about Adam or was this a one-off for Christmas?
taking into account the
taking into account the reminder from my friend christina h that this is fiction, i will not
go into a lengthy diatribe. suffice it to say that, based on the story as written, in my
opinion, the actions taken by adam's mother are reprehensible and inexcusable, and those taken by his aunt -- the doctor, no less -- are criminal. phydeau
This is a GOOD story
If elements of it are offensive, then so what? Many people found that Adolf Hitler was offensive, so does that mean any story about WWII in Europe must avoid references to him? The protagonist of this story is in a situation forced upon him without his knowledge. Within the realms of this story, this is a fact - and so the author (who gets my award for outstanding and continuous brilliance) deals with the fact and the ramifications of that fact. Why is that so wrong?
It ain't.
End of.
Excellent job, Angharad.
Thank you.
Well done!
I read the story more than once and thought about what I'd say in my comments. Well, here goes It is a shame about what Adam/Eve's mother and Aunt did to her (it's easier for me to use one gender). But, It may be due her mother wanting her child to be able to get a chance at a better education her future. This story all but cries for more chapters to give the readers some closure regarding Eve's life. Milady,, if you would be so nice as to add a chapter or two to show us where you are going to take Eve and her story. I am sorry as in my previous posting I called Angharad a gentleman when I did not know her true gender and asked If the Kind Sir could give us readers some new chapters regarding Eve.
There are males...
There ARE males today, that have gone through puberty that can sing like that. Take a listen to my voice teacher (Tony winner for the revival of Chicago) sing this bit from the show: David Sabella-Mills. And, some of his classical arias.. Beautiful, and amazingly high. (Counter Tenor is what it's called... He can sing like a guy, too... LOL) And, no, I can't sing worth beans and had no idea he was so good/talented when I asked if he taught.
Lovey story, and an expected outcome. LOL
Thanks,
Annette

If they want him in the college...
[This story popped up on the front page as a Random Solo]
If they want Adam/Eve in the college, maybe he can hold out until they offer a car.
A nice story. I'm glad the child shows some mettle.

Blockers won't be enough
If Eve is going to study for a music degree, blockers won't be enough to carry the impression she's a genetic girl. She'll need a full HRT regimen and we all know that that leads to.
