My Fair Lady
Reading this wonderful story, I can’t help but think about Professor Higgins taking Eliza Doolittle to Ascot in “My Fair Lady”.

A little gem of a story. :)

A loveley little tale
but 'jockey racing'??? I don't think that is a real term in England. She should have just said, 'I breed horses for Equestrian events' and leave it at that.
A thoroughbred who can win a 7 furlong sprint is a very different animal from a 3-day Event horse.
Samantha.
PS
And well timed, as we are between 'The Derby and Oaks' from Epsom and 'Royal Ascot'. I'm 15 miles from Ascot.
Flat racing
Flat racing is one term I've heard.
Hugs,

Flat Racing
here in the UK, that is mainly a spring/summer thing. The Derby and Royal Ascot are all 'Flat racing' events. In the winter, we have racing over 'jumps' These are chases, hurdles and steeplechases. These are run over courses that have fences. Hurdles are the lowest. Steeplechases such as 'The Grand National' are tough steeplechases (30 fences, 4.5 miles).
AFAIK, 'racing over fences' is not a big thing outside Europe but I could be wrong.

Horses and courses, and tracks
I confess that I am not a horsey person, but I loved the image and I had to write the story behind it.
Eric did the edit and he corrected me on many things, including using the word "track" for "course" and he pointed out that it is "the Jockey Club" that controls the race in the US.
He also gave me information on how on track betting works, but that did not add anything to the story.
It is based on a brief conversation that I had with a man who was an expert on horses and a professional bettor.
