Brightbird and the Cosmic Egg
Chapter 4 - Echoes of Grace and Creation
By Jo Dora Webster
A Transgender Coming of Age Adventure
From the Limoxian Universe
The observation deck of the Alvian Embassy on Ceti Alpha looked out over a breathtaking mosaic of starlight and planetary trade lanes. To anyone else, it was a magnificent vantage point. To Milia—known to the cosmos as the Terra Novan avatar Arcana—it felt like a cage of blinding mirrors.
Her hands hovered over the polished metallic railing, trembling faintly. The fingers that had once typed equations on a Terra Novan keyboard now hummed with a resonance that felt less like flesh and bone and more like pure starlight.
"You're fracturing the light again, Milia."
Milia jumped slightly, turning to see the familiar, elegant figure approaching. Collar moved with the effortless grace of her Alvian heritage, her wings folded neatly behind her, yet she wore her signature clerical collar and modified vestments—a proud nod to a life lived across radically different worlds. As teammates in the Alvian-Ceti Alphan superhero force, they knew each other's secrets well, right down to the human names and past lives they had left behind on isolated worlds.
"I didn't mean to," Milia whispered, pulling her glowing hands back. She let out a shaky breath. "Xanthia’s training is... it’s expanding faster than my mind can hold, Collar. One moment I'm learning how to channel avatar creation protocols, and the next—" She swallowed hard. "I accidentally wove a piece of an Alvian teammate's essence into a living shape. I have a daughter, Collar. An accidental, miraculous, living manifestation born from sheer cosmic static. How am I supposed to wield the power of creation when I barely understand who I am?"
Collar stepped closer, her expression softening with a deep, maternal empathy that transcended alien biology. She leaned against the railing beside Milia, gazing out into the dark expanse of the Limoxian Universe.
"Breathe, Milia," Collar said softly. "Creation is a heavy mantle, especially when you're still getting used to the weight of your own skin."
Milia looked sideways at her mentor-in-faith. "You make it sound easy. But you’ve walked this path. You understand what it means to be pulled from one reality and thrust into service to the Supreme Being—the uncaused cause that birthed the whole universe's thermodynamic march. How did you do it when you were first stranded on Terra? Back when you were just 'Jenna Richards' hiding behind an implanted armband?"
A quiet, nostalgic smile touched Collar's lips. She adjusted her clerical collar instinctively—a habit retained from a very specific, strange chapter of her life.
"Oh, Jenna Richards was just a desperate Alvian refugee trying to figure out how to praise the Creator in a backward gravity well," Collar murmured, her eyes drifting to the distant arc of the Milky Way. "When my escape pod vaporized upon crashing on Terra, and my starship was nothing more than shrapnel in orbit, I thought my destiny as an Alvian evangelist had hit a dead end."
"How did you survive it?" Milia asked, her anxiety temporarily replaced by genuine wonder. "You didn't look human."
"The Limox disguise armbands worked wonders, but truth requires a translator," Collar replied. "I was befriended by an Episcopal priest on Terra who saw right past my alien confusion and recognized a kindred theological spirit. We sat in a quiet rectory for hours, trying to map my native Alvian faith into human architecture."
Collar chuckled softly, the sound light and musical. "I had to invent terms that Terra could swallow without breaking its worldview. I explained the Supreme Being—the great Uncaused Cause—as Gina. And I broke Gina down into three aspects that felt familiar to them: Grace as the Parent, Love as the Teacher, and Glory as the Muse."
"You tricked an entire earthly denomination into a cosmic theology?" Milia asked, a small smile breaking through her stress.
"Not a trick, Milia. Translation," Collar corrected gently. "It mirrored their doctrine of the Trinity closely enough that they gave me a pulpit. And I used it to preach unconditional love. I wanted to collar the forces of hatred on Terra, to pull that broken planet toward justice one soul at a time." Collar touched her clerical band. "The Supreme Being noticed. In a moment of divine grace, my form shifted, rewarding my ministry. I became Collar—half-episcopal vestment, half-Alvian evangelist. Even when the rescue ships finally broke through the Van Allen belt to deliver us from Terra, and I was reunited with my people in our true Alvian forms, I kept the costume. It reminds me where I learned how to fight for people who didn't yet know they were loved."
Milia listened intently, the frantic pulse in her hands finally beginning to slow. "You bridged two entirely different universes with a metaphor and a prayer."
"And you are bridging Terra Nova, Ceti Alpha, and the divine legacy of Goddess Xanthia," Collar said, turning her piercing, kind eyes directly onto Milia. "Power isn't something to fear, Milia. Whether it's the uncaused cause sustaining the big bang or Xanthia preparing you to take her place when she steps beyond our reality, power is just love given physical form. Your 'daughter' isn't a mistake. She is evidence that your soul is finally creating from a place of truth."
Milia bit her lower lip, her eyes dropping back to her glowing, starlight-tinged hands. The hesitation hung heavy between them before she forced the rest of the truth out.
"That isn't even the hardest part, Collar," Milia murmured, her voice trembling. "When Xanthia realized I was channeling the power of creation, she understood something terrifying: my original Terra Novan body simply didn't have the biological or spiritual capacity to contain the sheer magnitude of avatar power I was going to wield. So, Xanthia gave me a Ceti Alphan body—knowing it could hold the energy because she herself was once a Ceti Alphan girl groomed to be a goddess."
Milia reached up to her ear, pressing the activation stud on her temporal plate. With a soft hiss of displaced air and a shimmer of hard-light refraction, the universal Limoxian armband projected disguise flickered and dissolved.
She stood before Collar in her true, native Ceti Alphan form, her pointed ears catching the ambient starlight of the observation deck, the unmistakable biological heritage of Xanthia's people laid completely bare.
"I can't hide behind the armband illusion anymore, Collar," Milia said, her voice steadying as she looked directly into the Alvian evangelist's eyes. "Not from you, and not from anyone else. If I am going to figure out how to process where to go from here, I have to face what has happened in the light, without hiding."
Collar held her gaze, watching the raw courage flicker in Milia's expression as she continued.
"I’ve been using my implanted armband technology to hide my new Ceti Alphan appearance, keeping up the illusion that I'm still just Milia from Terra Nova," she confessed, squeezing her eyes shut. "But the origin of this new body... it's a wound that hasn't healed for anyone else. During the last war, the Postulate Twins lost their third sister. She was brutally murdered right in front of them by the enemy before Xanthia could intervene. When Xanthia formed my new Ceti Alphan form, she used the essence of that fallen sister to shape and reincarnate her into me."
Milia looked up at Collar, unshed tears catching the ambient starlight. "When the Postulate Twins saw me, the illusion broke. Xanthia realized too late what she had done—she had forced them to look upon a living reminder of their sister's horror, and because of the rules set down by the Supreme Being, Xanthia's hands are tied. She can't magically undo her mistake. She's forced to just deal with the fallout of her own actions."
"And the twins?" Collar asked softly, her voice a steady anchor in the storm.
"They're fractured," Milia said, a heavy sigh escaping her. "The Priestess of the pair has found peace. She cherishes that a piece of her sister has been given a new life in me—in someone who never asked for any of this, but receives her love anyway. But the Protector... she’s suffering a devastating crisis of faith. She blames Xanthia for her sister's original death, and she physically cannot look at my face without seeing the ghost of her murdered sibling. I'm caught between one sister's fierce, desperate affection and the other's absolute disgust."
Milia wrapped her arms around herself, the cosmic power humming anxiously beneath her skin. "And it goes deeper than that, Collar. For the first time, I realize how much I've missed in Xanthia’s mentoring. I’m starting to understand that I’m not just being trained as a superheroine. Xanthia is grooming me to take her place—to be the next Goddess of Ceti Alpha when she leaves our reality to join the Supreme Being."
Her voice cracked on the edge of panic. "What if she leaves me before I'm ready? What if she deserts me right when I need her most to clean up this wreckage with the Postulate Twins, and I’m left holding a universe I don't know how to rule?"
Collar stepped closer, gently placing a warm, steady hand over Milia's trembling shoulders. The Alvian evangelist looked into Milia's eyes with profound, hard-won clarity.
"Xanthia gives power, Milia, but she cannot carry your heart for you," Collar said gently. "The Postulate Twins are walking through their own grief, and you are walking through the birth of a deity. But remember what we talked about—the Supreme Being didn't build this universe on mistakes; He built it on grace. The love the Priestess offers you is real, and the anger the Protector feels is a cry for healing. You don't need Xanthia to fix every jagged edge of your new existence. You just need to trust that the same love that shaped you into being can teach you how to heal the house divided around you."
Avatar looked upon Collar with a look of relief and perhaps even a way of dealing with her new reality.
Collar continued, "And more than that... I have been blessed with the ability to commune directly with the Supreme Being, and to share that communion with others. I have deep hope that if we quiet our minds together, the Supreme Being might reveal a glimpse of the greater design being worked out between Xanthia and you. Is that something you would like to experience?"
Before Milia could find the words to answer, the embassy's communication arrays flashed a sharp, amber warning across the bulkhead. Across the star-lanes, deep within the territory shared by Alvia and Ceti Alpha, the subtle ripples of an approaching threat began to register—the new enemy alliance moving into position.
Milia looked down at her hands one last time. The chaotic, sparking light smoothed out, settling into a steady, radiant warmth. She drew herself up, the panic gone, replaced by the quiet resolve of an awakening avatar.
"Looks like our quiet conversation is over," Milia said, her voice steady.
Collar smiled, her wings unfurling with a crisp, resonant snap as she stepped toward the staging doors. "Good. Let's go show them what creation looks like when it fights back."
