Curious Commentary

Taxonomy upgrade extras:

No comments for over three hours in the middle of the day? That's just weird when this site averages over 3 comments an hour and generally manages 2 even in the middle of the night. Anyone having problems with the commenting mechanism?

Hugs,
Erin

Nova Party Line

Bob has set up a micro blogging site for TG readers, Nova. Check it out! You can leave it open in a window and check it now and then, carry on quick conversations. Looks best in Firefox, BTW. Bob and I will be looking in often. It's quick and easy to sign up for and use. (Kind of like Twitter and other microbloggers.)

10,000 Posts!

Taxonomy upgrade extras:

In about a month, BC will hit 10,000 posts. That's not stories, stories+chapters will be a little over half of that because posts includes blogs, forums, title pages, announcements, links and images. But posts is the easy number to count. :) There are about 1500 stand-alone stories and 350 serials with close to 4000 chapters on BC. Exact numbers aren't really possible because of sloppy coding.

I hope people are following the "Skin Horse"* comic I now syndicate at the bottom of the blog pages. :) Today's fan-drawn episode features Tip, the crossdressing hero(ine) of Skin Horse and Wil Smith as MiLBDs so I've added it to the bottom of the front page, too. :)

Erin

The main hit counter for stories is working, the daily one is not. The story scheduler is not working correctly, either. The 100 comments is not working, as I said before.

No idea why, but we're also throwing some errors in the error file that seem to have to do with loading of some software.

Hoodwink at Fictioneer

Hoodwink, a character I created for my Promethean Universe, will be appearing on Fictioneer in occasional vignettes dealing with his struggle against Brass Nails. I just posted the first one earlier today.

I won't promise how often I'll be doing these, and they're very short, but I'll do them as often as I can.

Runaway Google Attack

The site went down this morning for a bit and when I brought it back up it seemed to be under a denial of service attack. So, I took it down and put up an error message while I investigated. Turns out it must have been a Google crawler that got a wild hare and kept hitting the same page, several thousand times.

Feeling a bit better

I've been under the weather lately, sinusitis and an injury to my foot. Both are doing better now, though the medication for my foot makes me a bit queasy.

But it's a great day today, a band at the college is going to perform some of my music. :)

I made a change in how the site looks over the weekend and no one commented. I'm curious, did anyone notice? If you're using the Reversi theme, I didn't make the change to it yet. :)

Voting on the Summer Romance Contest is delayed because the fucking voting software does not work. The old software worked, poorly but it worked, the new stuff does not and the old software is not available now.

I've spent two-and-one-half hours on this and I've got bupkiss. I'm going to bed.

So Much Good Stuff

You know, I haven't been able to keep up with reading all the postings on BC for over two years. So Much Good Stuff. I want to say thanks to everyone who posts stories, makes comments, blogs or helps me out with tech knowhow, front page assistance or freelance editing.

It just keeps getting better.

Take care all of you, hugs,
Erin

Downloaded a tool for keeping track of updates and upgrades to the software we use here. Looks like I've got two or three days work to do to get the current version up to date

One Year Ago - New Featurette

While trying to create a random pick of old stories, I stumbled across this neat little capability in Drupal. For now this little list will go in the top of the left column on the main page and will show stories from about one year ago, plus or minus 24 hours. I may be able to expand this to include stories from two years ago, three years ago, etc. And maybe not. :)

Counting Seismologists or Earthquake Terminology 101

We just had an earthquake here, or near here. A few people called so I just want to post that I'm okay. :)

Actually, I was in a restaurant drinking coffee and talking to a friend in Florida when it hit. I told her all about it, she asked how bad was it and I went into a spiel I made up on the spot.

I said something like this:

Software Upgrade

I just upgraded the core software for BCTS. Everything seems to be operating fine, I re-hacked the code in a couple of places where I had customized it. If something that did work no longer works, let me know and I'll investigate.

Over on the FictionMania Hyperboard, someone started a discussion of the use of sex-changing viruses in TG stories and someone made a comment about the impossibility of a virus being able to change bone structure. Here's a version of my contribution to that thread:

Maiden by Decree by Maggie Finson

Maggie's new epic about a boy who becomes a "Maiden by Decree" is now appearing at StarDust. I've got permission to post it here but haven't done so yet. If you want to read it right away, as it comes out, the chapters will be on StarDust days before they appear here. And it's good. :)

Erin
