Part 3

It’d been three months and I’ve had two more dreams. The first one was me living in Louisiana. It was hot as hell there and I woke effected by the heat, my sheets sweated through and curled into a ball crying my eyes out until my mom can in and tried to calm me down.

The cooler we’ve just hauled out to the car signals the end of our preparations–everything is packed in the car and ready to go. I can hardly wait until morning when, finally, we will be on our way. I realize that I’m looking forward to heading to the mountains with almost as much anticipation as I would if I were still Chris. The thought of hiking to the top of the mountain overlooking the lake really appeals to me as does spending some time in the canoe with a fishing pole. It’s been a long time since I’ve done either. Of course, doing it with Andy really adds to the appeal. On the flip side, hanging out while waiting for Rana & Co. to drop the other shoe will be nerve-wracking. Maybe he won’t get the message. One can always hope.

No explosives -- good boys -- and a bunch of zip tie handcuffs. No masks, though. Why is that?" I looked up at the men, expectantly. I had their heads seriously messed up. It was obvious they couldn't decide whether to run, or stick it out. Bald Guy produced a nasty-looking knife. "That's no business of yours, girlie. Don't ya know who we are?" I pulled a few of the zip cuffs from out of the bundle. "Oh, I know you. You're a couple of the Cartel's disposable soldiers…" Then I gave him a feral grin. "But -- you don't know who I am."

Mrs. Harrison gives me a tight hug before turning to the rest and nodding her readiness to get back to the meeting. They return to the conference room to continue whatever planning they are doing. Dr. Quinn smiles and winks at me as he returns with the group. I’m pretty sure that he knew what my answer would be. He knows me too well. Now, I only have to await the decision. It’s going to be a long afternoon––

Zach loved the outdoors: the fresh air, the open spaces, the rugged mountains, the sheer diversity of nature. Maybe what he liked most was the fact that there wasn't any of those damn LGBT types out there. Heck, that was why he was out there now, them and their damn Pride parade! Still, storming through the woods and mountain trails helped work off some of the anger, though there was still a lot left. Maybe if he wasn't so angry, he would have paid more attention to where he was going that misty morning, would have been more sure of his footing. Unfortunately, such things are left as afterthoughts of such incidents and looked back on in hindsight.

Chapter 13

It felt so good to sleep in. I know we went to bed early last night but it just feels good. I don’t know if it’s that fact I’m in bed with Taylor or it’s our bed and this is home to me, but it feels great. Taylor’s alive because I can hear him snoring a little. I don’t imagine he slept well in the hospital knowing what I know now.

I roll over onto my stomach and a little offside taking the pillow and scrunching it in my arms to push it up enough so I can rest my chin on it as I watch him sleep. I don’t think I’ll ever get tired of looking at him.

My relationship with Laurie suddenly comes into sharp focus. It was what? Two months ago that I was having this same conversation with her? Only then I was the one feeling like a fool. If she felt half as bad then as I do now, I really feel sorry for her. I know how Andy must feel having been there myself. I need to try to make him understand that I really do love him, regardless of the motivation which began the relationship. That’s how Laurie got through to me. I really, really hope this conversation has a similar ending to the one I had with Laurie. At least we won’t be fighting mosquitoes at the same time.
