Who is Heather Elizabeth Croft?

A few days ago I think I had an epiphany. I think I decided on a whim that my real name was not “William Alexander Croft” but instead it was “Heather Elizabeth Croft.” A revelation I'd not dared to share with anyone in fear of being laughed at or at worst being put aboard a south bound train to Chamberlain Hunt, a private military school that was located in Port Gibson, Mississippi. Some one hundred and fourteen miles south of Greenville, Mississippi.

"Dancing bears, painted wings... things I almost remember

"Ha ha! You're always singing that song," she said, giggling.

Her brother looked up from the couch, still singing.

"It's my favorite song!"

"But you sing it every day... every... day!" she said, giggling.

"You know, you kinda look like her with your green eyes."

He blushed with a gentle smile and dreamy eyes.

Breaking out of his reverie, he threw a sock at her.

I took a deep breath. According to the army green wrist watch I always wore on my wrist the time was around two thirty in the afternoon. I'd been mowing grass, pulling weeds, and pruning bushes for a good five hours now. It was now in the hottest part of the day and I was thankfully I'd just finished the job. Dripping sweat I took a shallow breath and sat down upon the concrete steps of our front porch and peered out at the sun drenched vista that spread out in front of me.

Prologue

The whole house was asleep. Which afforded me a measure of privacy I did not have during the day. According to the wall clock on the kitchen wall it was twelve o' ten in the morning. A rerun of Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex was playing in the background. And I was sitting at the family's computer. Trying my best to write something. I needed to write something. I had this burning desire to write something, I had ideas, but I did not have the voice.

“Do we have another question?” The emcee asks as I look out at the audience — a typical crowd that you’d get at a press conference, but this one is different in many ways.

A few weeks ago my life had flashed before my eyes. I'd been forced to cosplay as a Confederate Rifleman for a dumb Civil War reenactment by my tyrant father. In the course of the reenactment I'd developed a second degree sunburn, was bitten by a venomous snake, became dehydrated, and finally the cherry on the sundae was the fact that I had to spend three weeks in the hospital.

The first morning Emily signed her name instead of Aaron’s, she expected the pen to hesitate.

It didn’t.

The ink flowed across the page with quiet confidence, forming six familiar letters that had long since ceased to feel borrowed.

Emily.

She looked at the signature for several moments after the form had been handed back across the counter.

Nothing extraordinary happened.

The clerk smiled politely and moved to the next customer.

“You want me to do what?”

Danny stared at Zoe across the small café table, his cappuccino frozen halfway to his lips. At five-foot-six with a slim, almost delicate build, Danny had never been the adventurous type. That had always been Zoe’s department.
