When John Philips goes to college it is the single biggest achievement of his life. Orphaned at a young age he is managing to pay the expensive college fees with the help of an aged benefactor. “I’m sure Miss Benson put no pressure on you to cover her butt either to keep up this charade?” Mom spat.

“Really Mom!” I pleaded. “I chose this.”

“Lynn, I’m so angry right now, please, don’t say another word! You and Mindy could have ended this before things went beyond crazy. All you had to do was tell the truth, and Miss Benson should have accepted that she was part of a cruel hoax. That should have been the end of it.”

“Please don’t be angry, Mom! I really don’t mind being a girl."

 
I laughed in spite of myself, but to my horror, it wasn’t my usual laugh. It was higher pitched. A girl’s laugh.
“Ha! I knew it! You ARE a girl.”
I felt something twinge inside me when she said that.

 
The more pressing issue, though, was how I was going to be able to pee. I covered my face with my hand. I was just in a bathroom, my mother’s voice in the back of my head told me, why didn’t I go then?

I looked around, realized firstly that I had collapsed on a tiled floor, secondly that it was the floor of the women’s restroom.
