Every rookie police officer knows the dangers of the job by the second week under their training officer. By the end of their training every rookie understands that there are something they can’t control, and not all crimes will be solved. Though all rookies share the same dream. Their first assignment following training. For 21 year old Officer Joe Cartwright of the Baltimore PD that dream is to be a member of the Mounted Patrol. What he got would lead to a life changing path.

One day I was talking with Anna. “You know, I never did figure out where vampires came from.”

“Did we have to come from somewhere? Couldn’t we have just developed, like humans did?”

“And what, we converted the apes and Neanderthals back before humans developed? That doesn’t seem right. Why does holy water have an effect on us? Are we demonic in origin?”

“Huh. I never really thought about that,” Anna remarked.

The rest of the way to the mall, Sadie observed Chris’s process for his latest task. After seeing how it amused the others, as well as how fun it was to get Amy’s cousin to stumble through explanations of why he was saving each particular picture, she kept up the questions and comments. Despite the inappropriate nature of what they were talking about, Sadie somehow managed to keep up her innocent demeanor. It was a confusing contrast to Amy’s smug attitude and Julia’s more dominant energy.

Friday I didn’t have an evening date with Anna because she was working in the restaurant again. This time, I decided to try the Straight Only club and find a guy. It was weirder than I expected. I realized that all these men used to be women who turned into their idea of the ideal man. But that didn't seem to fully explain what I saw.

I followed her down to a portal to the 18th level, where there was a theater. But not movies on a screen. We went past the main entrance to the theater, down a long corridor, and through one of several doors, onto an empty stage, behind closed curtains. From some sort of control panel Anna selected something. There was a mechanism that I could hear under the stage which moved some set pieces into place. The title “Romeo and Juliet” appeared facing us at the top of the curtain. She did a bit more, and the display changed to read “Rosalie and Juliet.”

“Do you want to be Rosalie or Juliet?”

Chapter Five

Taylor had his phone now, which was one of the few improvements from the previous day. He dug it out from where he had stashed it in his backpack before daycare, planning on texting Anna to see if she was at the house. Before he could do so, Sarah plucked the device from his hand. “Taylor, this is just to be used for emergencies,” she said, “Is this an emergency?” She tucked the phone between her thighs for safekeeping while driving, correctly assuming that Taylor wouldn’t reach down there to get it back.
