As I walked into Kathy’s office she was behind her desk. She looked up at me with questions written all over her face. Over against the wall to my right was a man in a suit and tie, coat, pants. He was holding a briefcase which was chained to his left wrist. His right arm moved lightly to the middle button on his coat.

He was giving me a real close looking over with none of us moving. “Name?”

“Nova”

“Go on.”

Anti-Hero

We sat at Taco Time for what seemed like forever and wondered about what our fate would be. Would mom come with a fleet of police cars or just herself? I hoped for the police cars, as they would keep her from slapping the ever-loving crap out of me. Christy and Becky would receive the patented Linda Moone evil-eye glare several times form the rear view mirror until we reached their homes. Mom would either tell them goodnight or she wouldn’t say a word as they got out; assuming she would stop the car to even allow them to get out in one piece.

Four men got out of a blue Chevy sedan in the parking lot and headed to the docks, wondering who all the people already there were? Standing at the steps Spencer met them at the edge of the dock. He held out his hand for them to stop. “Security, what’s your names?”

“Fuck you, you’re no security I’ve ever seen before. Get out of my way.” The big tall guy started up the steps.

“The Aeroplane Flies High”

I woke up before Christy and stared at the bare walls of her bedroom. Christy lived in the partially unfinished basement of her grandmother’s house where the walls sometimes felt wet and hanging posters was just about impossible. The grey, naked bricks had millions of holes and I thought that if I could lose my mind counting those holes then I wouldn’t have to deal with my current situation:
That my family life sucked.
That my love life sucked.
That life in general sucked.

“Bartender, may I have a glass of blood?” I swear I will treasure the look on their faces forever before I started giggling. “Kidding guys, I really am not a vampire and I don’t drink blood. I am kind of thirsty though. A small glass of soda water if you’re open this morning.”

The bartender hesitated before he reached under the counter, retrieved a small glass and filled it with soda water. He set it on the bar sans paper coaster.

When the lady with Joan on her name tag walked up to me I asked the first question. “Is she calling the cops?”

Joan shook her head. “No, Jenna was her friend. Darla has a real hard on for cops now.”

“They aren’t all bad.”

“There are enough bad ones it makes little difference. You want an appointment?”

“Not really. Kathy said I did. Kathy is my boss now so I’ll do what she tells me.”

There are Predators and then there are the Hunters. Sometimes the same thing, sometimes they aren’t. To some the thrill of the chase and then the kill is all they desire in life. They can find employment with the more powerful and less ethical men, organizations, and even the government. Those predators get paid to do what they would do anyway, killing. They are top of the food chain.

The Huntress is a predator herself. Only…, she hunted the predators, those who hunted others. Always on the move, she tried to stay ahead of those who hunted those like her. Government agencies believed her kind should be eradicated from the face of the earth.

Melissa spends a nice, quiet, uneventful day, shopping with her aunt. At least, that was the plan, but with a codename like Mischief, when do things ever go as planned?

Gotta Know Now

I met Aylese a few days before my 12th birthday. It was an early spring day and I spent it in the woods across from my house in Papillion, Nebraska. The woods, such as they were, were a small patch of land that sat between our sub-division and the flat lands that once had a railroad line, with wooden beams, metal plates and rusty track spikes being the only remnants of that time. In the middle of the trees was a creek that during the summer and fall was near dry but in the late winter and early spring it was very deep and had a swift current.

And here, we have my very first attempt at screenwriting.
This was entered into the first year of Project Greenlight where it went to round two but was eliminated.

Unlike the other scripts, you will note the lack of any musical cues, as these were added in a later draft that was lost (along with my other scripts when I erased the wrong memory card).

Please note that the script's ending is NOT the same as the book (Unwritten Rules) will be (the subplot and narrative are entirely different).
