This is a fantasy story set in the U.K., in a world where there are fewer females being born. Western society has rigid social roles.

When the bus arrived all three of us got on and sat on the bench seats at the end of the bus. These seats faced each other. We sat facing Elsie.

“Well then Jan, where are you two off to then?”

I wasn’t used to hearing Nan’s first name. I called her Nan and my mum called her mum.

Helen did a double take when she heard Ginny blurt that out after the conversation she had been having with David and his breakdown, maybe this child had a better insight into her child than she did. Ginny's mother was trying to shush her daughter but David didn't seem to be reacting in a negative manner to what she had said. She looked closely and she could see the feminine in the young man and she wondered if there was something there. Helen and Richard had always seemed to be normal and when she had dealings with David he was a thug.

The parents of a troublesome teenage son finally had enough and sends him for special training. He gets more than she bargains for.

There's something special about sharing a meal, I think it creates memories, strengths the  bonds and such. So mom and I sat there, enjoying our pizza. I could feel the ice starting to melt away. Mom had ordered a jumbo slice of cheese pizza. I had ordered a jumbo slice of pepperoni pizza. One thing I loved about Sbarro's pizza was it was the style, it was New York Style, meaning the slices were huge, like massive and thin enough for you to fold them in half like a sandwich. A gooey, greasy, cheesy, pepperoni sandwich, a tiny bite of heaven.

“You act like it’s a hardship being young, beautiful, and talented.”

Some people say, 'the best-laid plans etc' often come to nothing. That was what happened to our intention to get our hair and nails done before our date with my father. Instead of a new hairstyle, we had to settle for a new outfit apiece.

The next morning and all dressed up in our new glad rags, we took an earlyish morning train from Leeds to Harrogate. This was well before the allotted time for my encounter and gave us a chance to wander around the town. I’d never appreciated the architecture of the town before but it was quite impressive. Most of the town had escaped the ravages of the 1960’s concrete brutalism that passed for good design at the time. This was a marked contrast to many of our towns and cities.

The drive home ended up being rather awkward for both Ash and his mother. Ash was still coming down from the high of having an absolutely amazing time at the shoot. Yet now in the car with his mother all doubts and nerves were hitting him full force again. Jessy’s pep talk had given him a boost, but it wasn’t helping much in this very moment. Did his mother suspect he liked it? What must she be thinking of him if she did? Her only son a sissy? Ash was no sissy, but in the moment those derogatory terms Keira had used instantly jumped to mind.
