“That is more than enough.” The voice called out. The voice belonged to a young woman, who judging by her height, and her fashion choice was at least four years older than me. She was dressed in a cream colored top, and a black, pleated leather skirt, leather boots completed the outfit. Her violet colored hair reached down to her shoulders.

“Shake her hand, you both fought a good duel.” She commanded.

Easter Dinner

Nothing really happen for the rest of he day. Despite going to a Catholic Private School, Aunt Flora and I decided to skip going to Easter Sunday Mass. After breakfast Aunt Flora went to get her morning shower and I cleaned the kitchen. The rest of the day was spent with Aut Flora napping and I reading. Dinner was of course the mutton joint that had been stewing away for a good seven and a half hours now.

Easter Morning Breakfast

I took a deep breath as I walked into the kitchen. According to the calendar that was pinned to the wall in the hallway, today was 'Easter Sunday' not that it meant anything to me. I don't really consider myself a 'Christian'. True, I'm enrolled in a semi-private Roman Catholic Academy, but that was Aunt Flora's decision not mine. Plus she often boasted that she had the headmaster under her thumb.

Sights and Sounds!

In the Episcopal Church, Confirmation is supposed to be a sacrament of initiation that strengthens the grace we have received at our Baptism, it is supposed to be a marking of a deepening of one's own personal commitment to a Christian life. In the bourgeoisie South it's seen as kind of a social stepping stone. A young girl's Confirmation is often seen as a foreshadowing to her own Debutant Ball. A girl from a bourgeois family would often be Confirmated at age twelve, and at age sixteen or seventeen she would become a debutante. What is a debutante?

The traditional attire for young women, often ages twelve to eighteen who are to be confirmed into the Episcopal Church is a pearl white, floor length gown with long sleeves and white gloves. When one door closes, another opens.

Slowly I opened my eyes. My body did not feel as hot, and I was no longer seeing pastel unicorns floating around my head, also those pastel colored unicorns were no longer being preyed upon by the neon glowing dinosaurs. The room though was full of shadows, lots of shadows.

Could today be my last day on Earth? 
My body felt like it was on fire. As I lay flat on my back, I saw neon colored dinosaurs floating around my head. The air inside the tent was hot and humid. I was glad to be rid of my heavy, woolen, uniform with its big brass buttons. And that heavy musket.

Our picket line was a mile and half from the main camp. It took me around forty five minutes to reach the line. I was surrounded by total darkness. It seemed not a soul was around for miles. I took a deep breath as I watched Jamie collect the plastic brown tray that was heavily laden with a mountain of food that I'm sure contained enough calories to power a nuclear power plant. At three o' clock the next morning I found myself putting the twinkling lights of Benton behind me. Roughly five hundred or so miles of open road lay between me and Orange Beach.
