The Baker's Dozen was a series of short stories I wrote under my previous pen-name, Shawna Stimple, featuring the Baker sisters, and the people in their lives, through the 1960s, and beyond. I'll be updating, and re-releasing these stories as I go through them, correcting the errors that came with my first attempt at storytelling. I do intend to take a crack at these again in the future, and possibly release this series as an anthology, fleshing out the characters a bit more but that's a little ways off. In the meantime, please enjoy this little trip back in time.

The first part of the series is the story of Jimmy Baker, a young boy whose father has recently passed. Being the only male in the household, he starts acting out, and after nearly ruining a family outing on a visit to his grandmother's, his sisters think they've found a solution.

The next morning, Tommy woke up feeling the warmth of his wet diaper and of the sun streaming through his window. His mother greeted him with a smile and a loving hug. "Good morning, sweetie! Let's get you changed and ready for the day," she said. Once she had finished, his mother lifted him into her arms and held him close. "There we go, all fresh and clean," she said, pressing a gentle kiss to his forehead. "Now, let's go have some yummy breakfast, and we can talk about what fun things we can do today."

T he next few days were quiet compared to the last few weeks. Katie and I had split up, she said she didn’t want a boyfriend who would dress up like i had been and although she had great fun the evening they had me dress up as a maid and other outfits, she said we had grown apart. I tried to convince her otherwise but it wasn’t a very hard attempt to win her back as my mind was growing more and more fond of Rachel.

I took off the dress wondering what mum had in store for me next.

She said she had changed her mind and would save the ‘best’ for last. ‘Let’s keep you guessing about the outfit I think will really show up the girl in you’ she said.

The regionals were held in December, right before Christmas Break. In the two months leading up to it, Genesis trained hard with Ramona, Charlotte, Talia, and the rest of the cheerleaders. Over time, Genesis learned the routines that Ramona and Mrs. Wilson had planned out. Her nerves were amounting about the regionals, but she was doing pretty well in practice. It helped that Ramona had basically abandoned her old bitchy persona, and was now much more encouraging. Everyone on the squad appreciated the now-positive influence she was bringing.

….I stood for what felt like ages before she returned with two bundles of light blue satin and lace. It was going to be a long afternoon!

‘Ahh’ she said ‘look at you waiting like a good girl for your dress fitting’ and chuckled

I just pulled a sarcastic smile. I was sure she had tidied her hair and touched up her make up while I was waiting, she looked gorgeous and definitely looked more striking since I first walked into the shop.

The first dress was lowered into an open ring on the floor and I was instructed to step into it.

Genesis barely remembered going home from the mall. All she remembered was the shock she was in. Mirna had been murdered. She wouldn't be able to reset everything to the way it was. Genesis would be stuck as a woman for the rest of her life. By the time she got home, she was right on the verge of crying. She didn't even bother talking to her dad or stepmom. She just went straight to her room, flopped down on her bed, and started crying. She cried nonstop for half an hour, feeling really sorry for herself. Her life had hit a low point that she doubted she could get up from.
