Chapter One

Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner

Darrin called from the open doorway. “Sam…have you seen my…”

“Briefcase?”, his beautiful blonde wife suddenly appeared and smiled at him with the object of question in hand.

He returned the smile as he took possession of the briefcase in one hand and his wife in the other. Rewarding her with a kiss, he reluctantly released her and turned toward the door.

“Sorry Sam…I've got to run. Larry wants to go over the new account before Mason and McCoy arrive. It's the first time the agency has ever run a campaign for a legal team, so wish us luck.”

Samantha leaned forward and gave him a peck. “You don't need luck when you have the best young ad exec in the business.”

Darrin rolled his eyes. “You’re prejudiced.”

“Guilty as charged”, she smiled as their lips met in a last kiss.

As Darrin turned toward the door with his wife's sweet kiss on his lips, she administered the sour. “Don't forget …Mother's coming for dinner tonight.”

His smile quickly evaporated as he pulled the door toward him “I might have to work late…REAL late.”

Before Sam could object she found herself face to face with a closed front door. Sighing, she shook her head and wondered if two people she loved with all her heart could ever learn to like, if not love each other.

Traditionally, mother-in-law's and son-in-law’s often had a tumultuous relationship, but when your mother is a witch and your husband is a mortal, being the witch referee in the middle took the ongoing battle to new heights.

Yes, Samantha and her mother were spell casting, broom riding, cauldron stirring witches, while Darrin, the love of her life, was a mortal.

Their six year “mixed marriage” had been frowned upon, scrutinized and constantly interfered with by her family and the Witches Council since the wedding.

Samantha's decision to live in the mortal world as a housewife and refrain from using her powers unless absolutely necessary, has been a challenge at times, but the sacrifice was well worth it to build a life with the man and daughter she loved. Tabatha, was the five year old product of their love and a junior version of a nose twitching witch like her mother.

Shaking her head, she sighed aloud, “Sometimes I think you two are going to drive me crazy.’

“Well little one, if this tedious mortal existence has you talking to doors, you might already be there.”

Samantha whirled around to find her mother Endora had popped in for a visit, literally.

“Mother!”She greeted her with a smile and a hug. “I didn’t expect you this early.”

“Well …I was posing for Leonardo, but Italian artists always get a little handsy…so I thought I’d come early and spend the day. Maybe we could take Tabitha to the New York World’s Fair. I’m sure she would love it.”

Sam gave her mother a puzzled look. “There’s no World’s Fair going on in New York.”

Endora smiled slyly. “There is in 1936.”

“Mother…”, Samantha rolled her eyes and giggled

Suddenly the front door opened and spanked Sam’s bum, causing her to squeal and jump. When she turned she was greeted by Darrin’s smiling face.

“I’m sorry honey I didn’t know you were there but when I got to the car I found…”

“Oh look, it's tall, dark and dumb dumb.”

Darrin’s smile drained as he stopped mid sentence to trade barbs with his favorite antagonist. “Endora, what a surprise. I didn’t hear you ride in.”

“Darrin! …Mother!”, she scolded them. “Now you both promised to be nicer to each other.”

Endora raised her hand high in the air. Her fingers curled like a cobra ready to strike. “He would be so …much easier to be nice to if he was a Cockerless:Spaniel.”

Darrin’s eyes went wide as Samantha stepped in front of him and shook her finger at Endora. “Mother …you promised.”

Endora lowered her weapon and huffed, “Samantha you have no sense of humor. I might as well go up and check on Tabatha.”

With a wave of her hand, she was gone leaving the loving couple alone again.

Darrin was still bristling from his near rendezvous with a flea collar. “Your mother makes me want to move to Salem.”

Sam sighed and changed the subject. “You said something about the car?”

“What? Oh yes ... I found this on the windscreen.”

He handed her a flier with the words, “Parent’s Beware”, in bold print and then several pictures of men below it.

“I didn’t have time to read it carefully, but it mentioned a toyshop. I think it’s the one you're always taking Tabitha to and I thought you might want to look into it, but I've really gotta go.”

He gave her a light kiss on the cheek and then shut the door behind him. Samantha gave him an air kiss after the fact as the flier had caught her attention.
