When Samantha wants to help Jenna, she finds out her friend is the victim of a three hundred year old family curse...and a whole lot more.
“Jenna…I really wish you would stay.”. Her attention turned toward the flier on the coffee table. “You can’t let a few small minded people and a little bad luck ruin what you’ve built here.”
Jenna chuckled when Samantha mentioned bad luck. “Bad luck…is something the Stewart women have been living with for over 300 years.”
When she saw the puzzled expression on Samantha and Endoras’s face, she topped off everyone's coffee and explained that Stewart was her maiden family name and misfortune had fallen on her female ancestors as far back as she could trace the family tree. Most Stewart women died before reaching sixty and nearly all had endured lives filled with poor health, unhappiness, and numerous misfortunes. To Jenna, having been born a female in a male's body was just another chapter in the family tradition.
Jenna finished her tale with a heartfelt smile, “Some might say being transsexual was just another misfortune but if that's what I had to endure to be blessed with a wonderful husband and two girls then I think I’m the first Stewart woman to beat Rebecca’s Curse.”
Both Endora's and Samantha's eyes went wide as they looked at each other and said in unison, “Rebecca’s Curse?”
Seeing their interest Jenna continued the story. “It’s just an old wives tale that's been passed down for over three hundred years, but the story goes that my great ..great…great…well you get the point, grandmother, Rebecca Anne Stewart was a witch. I mean a real spell slinging, cauldron stirring, broom riding witch who fell in love with a mortal man and married him. Well …evidently witches aren’t allowed to marry mortals so when this Witches Council found out about it, they demanded she annul the marriage and never see him again. Rebecca refused their demand and when they threatened to take her powers, she renounced them and spent the rest of her life as a mortal, but that's not the end of the story. It seems the Witches Council didn't take too kindly to Rebecca telling them to stick those powers where the sun don’t shine and placed a curse on her daughters and every Stewart woman to follow.”
When Jenna finished her tale she looked at her two friends who sat quietly and ashen faced as if they’d seen the ghost of Rebecca Anne Stewart herself. “It’s just a silly story. I mean everyone knows there’s no such thing as witches, but…”
She opened the top two buttons of her blouse to reveal an old locket which she opened to reveal a small portrait “This was supposed to have belonged to Rebecca’s daughter and the picture within is Rebecca herself. Over the years it survived wars, disease, and even the sinking of the Titanic, to be passed on along with the curse to the next Stewart woman. My mother passed it on to me when I had my surgery, but I guess that means the curse dies with me since I don't have a baby maker, but as I said, it’s just a story because everyone knows there’s no such thing as curses and there’s no such thing as witches.”
