Chapter 13 – The little details
One evening later that spring Mom returned from work in a strange mood. She was clearly preoccupied by something but as usual was being mysterious about it. I reckoned that this was one of her methods of keeping control of my life. After supper however, all was revealed.

After I calmed down I looked out my bedroom window.

I knew it was a big mistake to go on stage again after I had stopped touring when Covid-19 struck. The last two years had been the best of my life and I had absolutely no wish to resume my stage career as Daisy Sweetheart, the soppy singer/songwriter. Especially since it was obvious that this concert would be a disaster. I hesitated before going onstage but my manager gave me a shove and I walked out there. If only I hadn’t swiped that book from my sister five years earlier.

Warning:Most of this story takes place in Louisiana during 1963 . there is some language so be warned.

Chapter Four – Buckwheats

Final installment. Trans FBI agent Jennifer Jones is undercover trying to expose the evil Ukrainian Mafioso Dmitriy Yakovich. She is on her own relying on her training and the preparation provided by Uri and Katya.

3525 Clam Dig Road, Los Angeles, California:
“Who’s our guest?” Leland watches as Tammy removes the body armor the person was wearing off their body.

“I don’t know, but you wouldn’t believe what they went up against.” Tammy slowly removes the body armor.

When she gets all the body armor off the person. She could see they were wearing some sort of black bodysuit underneath the armor. It had a spongy feel to it as she touches it. There was a hole where whatever hit the person had gone through the armor. The skin was burnt and blistered.

It came as no surprise to anyone when Edmondo eventually died. He had not enjoyed his last few months, being trapped in a body he could not control. I could see his anger in his eyes and tried to talk to him about good things to keep him happier.

“You got an eyeful?” I asked, once I had my door closed behind me.

The two teens made their journey to the Copperthwaite's house on the bus, Cary once again in skirt and tights. The bus stop was about two houses down from theirs and Cary had voiced his concerns about being recognised again and Tara noticed since he'd been practising as a girl and learning all the songs, he sounded more and more like one. She was convinced he was pretty well foolproof.

"What if we meet someone from school on the bus?" Cary postulated.

Chapter 4

Of course, you don’t invent a new and legal business as easily as pulling a rabbit out of a top hat. No, there has to be a lot of thought and not a few meetings. We first talked through what we did do as a family and, once you took away the prostitution, money laundering, stand-over tactics, and smuggling there wasn’t a lot that we could turn out hand to and still keep our self-respect.

Chapter 5 – My big day
The day before Thanksgiving I was surprised to see my mother’s station wagon at the school gates at the end of the day. When she saw me she motioned me to get in the back of the car.
“Hurry Jennifer! We’ve a lot to do and not much time to do it in,” she greeted me as I pulled the door shut behind me. I was desperately hoping that no-one within earshot had heard her make use of my femme name!

The dryad had made its way back into the woods, out of sight. There weren’t many sounds, except the crying of Rachel as her world was turned upside down once again.

Daddy and John seemed to have put the loss of Ralph behind them, or at least realized that dwelling on it wouldn’t get us through this mess we were in. It seemed as though they were talking to the pixie. I wasn’t sure what they hoped to get from her, but I quietly joined them.

“I can’t be bought and sold like a cow,” she said. “Much less lost in a bet”.

Chapter 2

He checked my chart and signed it before he left, leaving me to ponder my fate. Well, someone had been through my knapsack! As I continued to think, I realised that I was unlikely to be in a prison hospital because this countries’ police would have just finished me off with a brick to the head before announcing that I had been dead on arrival; and then splitting my haul and my savings between them. This made it more curious but left the question of why was I here?

You can fool most of the people some of the time, but how long can you fool yourself?
