Aria? Aria, née Lewis looked around, holding up the lantern. A thick layer of dust lay on everything - even the empty Jolt cola can resting on its side in the corner next to a cheese crackers wrapper that looked slightly less aged than the can, judging by its lack of dust. “It’s beautiful,” she said. “But I’ll admire the scenery later. You didn’t bring me up here for a social visit.”

Heather actually beamed in the light of the lantern. “God damn. Maybe you really are one of us. Okay, let’s try a new one. Aria is what I call you, a nickname. Lewis Chambers is your scholar standard. Oh don’t look so surprised,” she laughed. “You think I’d let someone up here without finding out who they are?” She winked. “Anyway, you've got the trouser role, but up here in the shade you don't have to wear a mask. What's your true name?"

“Hyperextended in the AAA finals,” Jade sighed, balancing her weight. “They had to carry me off like a sack of flour. Totally embarrassing. But hey, now I’m a scout. I didn't see your name on the NAMASA roster, T-Bird.”

“Late entry. Jen thought I needed to ‘expand my horizon’ beyond the TKD bubble.” Tiffani glanced at the gold ‘NAMASA #1’ pin on Jade’s jacket. It caught the fluorescent light with a mocking glint. “The 2028 Olympics are the goal,” Tiffani said softly, her eyes drifting to the crowd. “But the noise, the drama about trans girls on the mat. NAMASA is already rattling the cage, Jade. I don't know if I can hold the mask for four more years.”

“Let’s see...” he said as he ran his fingers over the shelves. “Read it, read it, read it twice... Oh, what are you doing here?” he said, picking up the 1995 copy of Wicked. It was stuffed to the far right of the shelf, and, at least to his vague recollection of the Dewey decimal system, was completely on the wrong shelf.

A yellowed, old index card, fluttered to the ground. He knelt down to pick it up, turning it over.

‘If ur reading this don’t throw it away. Put it back where u found it. But, if ur looking for amazing acoustics, ask Jessica in the skool theater. She’ll show u the way to the utility corridor! -W.W.’

The second the bell - not a modern chime, but a literal, 1970s classroom steel bell that Clarity never bothered to upgrade probably because it would break something else if they did, screamed the hour, he bolted. He didn’t wait for a dismissal, or for Madison and her entourage to clear the hell out of his way.

He just. Ran. He knew there were bathrooms somewhere in the next corridor. He swore he would never use a public bathroom if he could avoid it. He even showered at odd hours, like midnight when everyone else was asleep, just to have a modicum of privacy, but this? This was a saliva soaked emergency.

He barreled through the extremely heavy door without a second thought.

Two new books in the works!

If you follow me on Bluesky (@ScaerieTale.itch.io) you already know about my current projects, but I know BigCloset is its own microcosm too. I wasn't going to announce anything yet because, at first, it was just one book I was working on. But I finished it and needed to occupy my time and creative energy with all the ideas that I didn't use in that book, so now, I'm writing a second one while the first one cools and awaits final editing. There's also been some family medical drama but I won't drag this down yapping about all that right now <3

When they're ready they'll both be available a chapter at a time here on TopShelf, or as an e-book for anyone who wants to skip ahead :)

>“I’m going to be brutally honest with you, Ms. Riley,” Ms. Winters said - and she was indeed Ms. Winters. Anyone daring to call her Melissa, with the probable exception of Karen, the photographer I mentioned before, would very quickly learn the error of their ways. “If I hadn’t so much respect for my dearest friend Erika and the amount of work she’s put into her inheritance here, I’d be trying to poach you for my modeling agency right under her nose.”

I wanted to think she was joking, but her tone, expression, all seemed to suggest this was not something she would joke about. I had no idea what to even say to that.

“Thank you,” I managed. “I don’t think I’m cut out for modeling.”

“Nonsense,” Karen spoke up as she approached us now, having photographed me at least half a dozen times from different angles beforehand. “Anyone can be trained how to stand, walk, smile, pout, but a natural team player is worth double her weight in gold.”

“So,” Avery said, “I gotta ask, before I forget... Do you happen to know someone named Lynetta?”

I very nearly choked on my cappuccino. “You’re the robotics expert she told me about?”

Avery cackled. “You’re the superbike owner I hooked her up with some custom parts for! Holy crap.”

I didn’t rev the bike too hard because we were still in the body shop, but as soon as I rolled out into the open parking lot, I opened it up, doing a 720 before spinning out onto the street and right in front of a cop.

“Crap,” I said to myself, slowing down as the blue lights flashed in my mirror. By some miracle, they flipped back off again. I guess it was just a warning. I rolled up to the stop sign, turned around and gave them an ‘Okay’ hand signal before waving. The cop, looking a bit smug, waved back and nodded at me as if to say ‘Just behave yourself.’

“Fans of the Midnight Dolls have been speculating for the last month over who the mysterious redhead was in that now infamous Raymond Max photo. Her publicist and bandmates are staying tight lipped,” she said. “I was wondering if you had any comment?”

“No comment,” I said before setting my cup down again. “On the record, anyway.”

She cracked a smile. “Off the record?” she asked.

“Whoa,” I said, “Hey. You haven’t done anything wrong.”

“That’s what Avery keeps telling me, but,” she threw a hand out and gestured wildly at the air. “All evidence to the contrary. I’m homeless, half my family hates me for existing, they hate my gramma for not taking a side, they hate each other for not voting ‘the right way’. Maybe it’s not my fault but I am the match that started the forest fire.”

“I’m not mad,” Erika said. “I just want to hear the whole story from your perspective, and why at 5 o’clock last night Victoria McQueen was calling me begging for the address of ‘that sweet Riley girl you have on staff’,” she said. She wasn’t betraying whatever feelings she had about the situation, for better or for worse.

I gulped. I know she said she wasn’t mad, but there were oh so many other emotions she could be feeling behind that poker face.

I caught a glimpse of both Emily and Claire standing near the back offices, and Nick was on duty at the front desk again, too. If these walls had ears, they’d probably wish they had hands instead, so they could shield themselves from the coming bloodbath.

“Riley,” she said, looking me right in the eye as I felt her hand slip into mine, “Is that what this is about?” she asked, shaking her head. “Look, as long as you’re honest with me, you aren’t going to hurt me. I don’t give a flying weasel’s tits what the tabloids have to say.”

Ghost in the Strings

12 year old Cassy Teegan is excited to spend the summer with her aunties June and Denise, not least because she gets to spend the summer as her true self, but also because Denise is finally going to teach her how to play guitar. But there's something unusual about the instrument that Denise brought home for Cassy as an early birthday surprise. The previous owner was quite attached to it, and it seems she isn't quite ready to let it go just yet.

“Um, about that,” Sinead said. Shannon elbowed her hard. “Oh come on now. You can’t seriously tell me you don’t recognize Shannon McQueen?”

Shannon glared at Sinead.

“I am so sorry,” I finally managed. “Now I feel bad talking how much I love your music and not even realizing I was talking to you this whole time.”

“This isn’t going to change anything is it?” Shannon asked cautiously. The whole vibe had turned on a dime, and she looked ready to bolt for the elevator.

If you're struggling with depression

Let me start this out by saying I, personally, am in a good place right now despite everything. This is not the blog post I wanted to make at Christmas time and my TopShelf anniversary, but it's the post that I need to make.

If you're struggling with life, especially at this time of year, you don't have to suffer alone. I need you, anyone, everyone, to understand this. Mental health issues aren't a sign of weakness that needs to be tucked away like an ugly Christmas sweater your grandma gave you when you were five.

If you need help right now, call or text the 988 lifeline. This is a completely free service no matter how major or minor.

““Hey,” Erika called in a warm tone as I walked past the wide open door to her office. I stopped and backed up, poking my head inside. “You’re looking better,” she said and motioned for me to come sit, so I cautiously approached and took a seat in front of her desk.

“Thanks,” I said. “I didn’t mean to look so...”

“Angry?” Erika supplied. I blushed. “It’s okay. I was just worried about you. Claire told me you had a family emergency the other night. Is everything okay?”

Sword and Sacrifice: A Feudal Fairy Tale in One Act

Sword and Sacrifice:
A Feudal Fairy Tale

Every hundred years, a sacrifice is demanded in order to ensure the prosperity of the nation, but one young noble swordswoman has taken it upon herself, not to break the cycle, but to at least postpone the loss of another innocent life for the next hundred years. How will the deity that holds back the dark react to her gesture, though. Will her sacrifice be accepted, or will both she, and the woman she loves, be taken for daring to try and change the pact?

“Hey, can I ask you a stupid question, now that we’re being all open and stuff?” I asked, adding, “Maybe this is just one of those girl things I can’t understand as a boy.”

She snorted loudly. “There’s no such thing. That whole men are from Mars, Women are from Venus is just a tired boomer stereotype to sell books. Ask away,” she said.

I debated posting this (because minor spoilers for GEM)

Pretentious "I'm a writer!" blog post. Sorry, not sorry ;)

So, "As a writer" (See, I told you! lol) I draw inspiration from everywhere, my own experiences, others' experiences, other works of fiction and non fiction, and sometimes - okay, a lot of the time - I'm just making it up as I go along just like the rest of us. But I have never experienced this before, where something I wrote actually perfectly mirrors someone's real lived experience, right down to using the exact same words to describe it, AFTER I had already written it.

I've got cold chills.

Set in the same universe as "Becoming Robin" and "Magic of the Kingdom" 17 year old Riley's life is going nowhere out of high school, and college in his own words "Just isn't for me," but a chance help wanted ad catches his attention, and changes the course of his life forever.

Set in the same universe as "Becoming Robin," 17 year old Riley just had no direction in life. College wasn't in the cards, not for a lack of options, but for a lack of interest. "I'm just not college material" was his refrain. But he didn't want to sit home doing nothing while his two older sisters regularly attended the nearby ivy leagues.

I Write Like Stephen King, Apparently. Wat.

Every so often YouTube remembers that I'm a writer and starts throwing random writing advice channels at me. Lately, and annoyingly, it's been people shilling AI writing (a can of worms I am notgoing to open here, but in brief: no, I never use AI, and we'll leave it at that). But this one actually caught my attention. It's a video essay discussing how Stephen King is such a prolific writer, including video clips of the author himself discussing his process, and, shockingly? Me too.

I had the wildest dream last night

Blog About:

Author:

Not the most descriptive title, I know, but I couldn't think of any other way to put it other than freakin' wild. I've never had a dream, or technically a set of dreams, stay on point to tell a continuous story like that in my life, and, bear in mind I have ADHD so I'm used to "weird" dreams that are unhinged. This one was actually somewhat down to earth which is what made it stand out. It almost felt like a past memory more than a dream, except for specific elements that I remember, that definitely point to it being a dream and not something more supernatural/paranormal.

Basically, I lived the life of a gay teenage girl, but with a heck of a plot twist at the end.
