I loosed the tension on my bow and put my arrow back in my quiver. I heard a woman’s voice behind me say, "Thank you, Gervaise," but when I turned there was no one there.

It’s the last day of November and Judy is picking me up from school. We’re going into Daisy City again but not to do aerobics or see Thelma, who redid my nails yesterday. Now my fingernails are a glittery fuchsia color. My toes will be done the same way tomorrow. I can’t wait.

But today, I have an appointment with a Doctor Emily Pandora who will doing my operation. It’s a consultation and she will be explaining the procedure with me.

I mean, he obviously knew what happened at school—how I barricaded myself in one office. What was to stop me from doing that here?

I spaced out for the next few days. Orderlies came in and changed my bedding, nurses fixed my colostomy bags, and drained the catheter bag. I got sponge baths, and they manually manipulated my limbs, so my muscles wouldn’t tighten up and atrophy. All the while, I sat there in a fugue. Things happened, and I was aware of them. But I didn’t give them any thought, and I certainly didn’t respond to anyone.

Brett sighed, the sigh of one who was weary of the whole world, a sound that had no business coming out of a fifteen year old. “Mum’s a user. She’s not at home for days at a time. I know what she’s doing, but don’t want to talk about it.” I just nodded. “When she’s home she’s out of it. There’s me, Jonno and Sophie. Jonno’s seven and Sophie’s five. There were others but they died when they were only babies before mum left the hospital. I’ve been collecting the family allowance for a couple of years now. I hide the book so Mum can’t get it, or we’d have nothing to eat. I can’t afford to get caught nicking anything, or the others will get taken into care. S’pose that’s what’s going to happen now anyway isn’t it?”
