“Hey, are you okay?” the contractor suddenly asked me. All three of them were staring at me now. I could feel my cheeks burning as I shook my head.

“I’m not sure. I’m not feeling well,” I trailed off.

“Nikki!” Marry shouted. Nikki stepped around the corner, laughing at something, but she suddenly stopped laughing when she saw everyone’s serious expressions. “You need to get Robin to the hospital.”

Thirteen year-old Taylor Landt’s step-mother believes that he should be the next great football player for the high school he’ll be attending in the fall. Having a dad who is an accomplished professional linebacker, and growing up surrounded by professional football coaches and players should all but guarantee his ability to dominate on the field. Unfortunately he hates playing football, and knows his height and build will never allow him to be successful at the sport. Faced with an obsessive step-mother who ignores his obvious talents in other areas but instead thinks he is a blight on his father’s reputation, Taylor does the unthinkable and moves to Ohio to live with his mother who abandoned their family and left him with his father eight years ago.

Soon after his arrival, Taylor discovers there’s more to his inability to follow in his fathers’ footsteps than just his height. Will it be possible for him to make friends in a new town in the middle of nowhere outside the shadow of his dad's fame? Will Taylor be able to finally make peace with his mother who abandoned them all those years ago? And how long can he keep his secrets to himself?

Eldorado part 1.

Eldorado…part one.

Chile 1855….

It’d been a long damned tired trip from home to Chile and I’d thought that I’d left all the excitement and the drama of America behind me. Well guess not, I just came to find out that South America was still an America of a sorts.

Just as wild, and just as filled with its own dangers. Like the tsunami that hit here a week or so ago. I wasn’t here but riding through the countryside the last few days I’ve seen plenty of things that really show the power of nature.

Part of me honestly wants to stop and help a few of these folks but one I’m a gringo until they take in that I’m a woman or that I look like one, then there’s the fact I’m white and American and a senorita.

Yep…heard right.

I look like a girl.

Bailey is stuck in a world becoming evermore confusing.
When things feel so right, he feels so wrong.
Even when things seem so positive around him,
Bailey feels something is horribly wrong beneath the surface.
It may be the beginning of a winter slump,
but perhaps there is more to it than that…

“So what’s next?” Angel asked as she fiddled with her phone.

Casey smiled as she loaded her app and changed her pin number then looked at her sister. “Lets head back to the dorms, and meet up with everyone so we can go to town!”

“Sure, but didn’t you have someone else to meet first?” Angel asked.

“Um I think so, oh yeah, duh Stephanie, sorry with everything that’s going on I got scatter brained.” Casey sighed.

“Wow. You’re really being considered for Captain?” Nikki asked as she approached me at my locker following second period English. I hadn’t breathed a word of it to her yet since in my mind, I had already decided I wouldn’t accept nomination.

“Oh, yeah, but it’s just Chelsea. She doesn’t want the Captain slot this year so it’s up in the air,” I answered as I closed my locker and pulled her into a hug.

She grinned. “Mmm. That was nice. What was that for?”

“I need a reason to hug you?” I teased, leaning up to kiss her. “C’mon vampire. Walk me to the gym? You’ve got Chem this hour so it’s on the way.”

Nikki giggled, wrapping her arm around my waist. I lay my head on her shoulder as we started down the hall together, but she suddenly stopped and whispered. “Hey, who’s the new girl with Jenn?”

I just rediscovered this. I wrote it as part of the Melanie Ezell challenge, but then went a little further than the end point here and got lost. It also didn't quite match the challenge which was 'Strong Of Will, Stout Of Heart' — forced femme with a strong willed victim. This almost fits the bill, but not quite.

“Weird...” Casey frowned, pushing the door closed. Angel was waiting right behind her, causing her to jump, and squeak just a little. “Jesus!”

“Sorry?” Angel giggled. “Who was at the door?”

“Our dorm guardian, Stephanie. She gave me these...” Casey held up the orange bottle with a frown. “She said they’d ‘help me fit in’. Weird huh?”

Sam knocked on the doorframe to get his fiance’s attention. “Can you take a break from grading papers to come have dinner?”

“Of course. Just let me finish this one and I’ll be right out.”

A few minutes later, Kylie made her way to the joint kitchen and dining room to find Sam filling a bowl with spaghetti. When he was finished, Kylie filled herself a bowl and the two sat at the table to eat.

“It’s your turn to start,” he reminded her when she sat down. “How was your week?”

Sam and Kylie had been together for nearly a year, and they’d made it a tradition to check in and decompress over dinner every friday night. Without fail, one of them would cook and the two would sit down and talk about their week.

Masque in D Major: II. Adagio non troppo

Masque in D Major

To an audience, the conductor's technique & art are the most mysterious of all the orchestra. Whether it be a world-class philharmonic orchestra, or a youth orchestra of yet-blossoming talent, only a small part of the conductor's work is visible on-stage, glimpses seen perhaps now, as a wave of the hand or baton & maybe then, as a wild dance atop the podium. And the conductor must always perform turned away from the audience, appearing to the outside world as if his or her face were hidden behind a mask…

Emily woke with Angie’s arms around her? She was being held and shaken and her face hurt…she tasted blood.

She flailed wildly for a few minutes before she realized she was still in her bedroom and then did a wild scramble for the bedside garbage can and started to “Hamlet.” into it.

To “Hamlet” was a local thing that came off of a teenaged drunk from someone a few grades higher that stuck in the school. Due to the “Yorrick” sound.

It is not down in any map; true places never are — Herman Melville
This continues Nan's story from The Voice

Nan seemed almost inconsolable. Her life felt like a travel program. At first her life felt wrong, but each choice that brought her closer to ‘right’ was met with, “Is this trip really necessary?” Once she made the final decision to have her surgery, it was anything but “Getting there is half the fun.” She found out, like so many of us, that her life and her choices met fulfillment every single day; that like the title of a favorite author of hers, the journey truly was the destination.

“Jenny!” Sally yanked the door open and wrapped her arms around me. “Wow, you look amazing.”

Duty Calls chapter 05-30+

Two days later my D.I. took me to see the First Sergeant again. This time I wasn’t so apprehensive. I could excuse the first time since it didn’t conform to the scenario for which Sarge and Gunny had prepared me. Hell, even the first day of the hand to hand course didn’t conform. It was like some of the people here knew some big secret about me and they were trying to keep it away from everyone else, especially the officers.

A sharply dressed woman met the three of them in the parking lot. She was younger looking then Ms. Smith but still as sharply dressed, she had a huge smile on her face and looked really friendly. The two women exchanged a brief hug.

“It’s so good to see you again,” the woman announced cheerfully. “And these are our newest residents?” she asked, turning an appraising glance on the two siblings.

“That’s right. I have their paperwork in my briefcase if you want to look over it first. I’ll be sending an e-file copy as soon as I get back to the office, in either case.”

So You Want To Be A Girl, Do You? - Chapter 6
by Barbara Lynn Terry

Part 1 - Hob nobbing at the social.

That night I dreamed about what it would be like at the social. I was going to live every girl's dream and attend a social on snob hill. I was introduced by the butler, and I was immediately surrounded by a pack of boys. They all wanted to know who I was, why haven't they ever seen me before. I was like, petrified, until this boy came and rescued me. We danced all day, and all I could see was approving smiles from Kathy.
