Chapter 4: The Claws

Linus ran a red light on the way home from Scarlett’s hotel. He was so distracted. The Fortis Beach Police that pulled him over recognized Linus from his days in the municipal court before he joined the firm. They talked about all the speeders and drunk drivers Linus had convicted as a junior prosecutor and those he’d gotten acquitted in his brief time as a defense attorney. The officer told Linus he’d let him go with a warning as long as nothing came back when he ran his license through their computer.

Hi, my name is Amber Ambrose. If you read “Nordic Goddess Frigga” you would know that I was the son of Gene, a white supremacist cult leader. You would also know that at the age of 71, Frigga heard my statement that, if I were young again, I would go through transition to be a woman. She made me a beautiful 21-year-old blonde with blue eyes. But there was a twist. She placed me in the body of a black ops paramilitary assassin. It was everything that I could do to keep from killing people. Frigga was not happy with me when I settled into a comfortable life as a martial arts instructor.

Jan was a short, skinny, blond hair blue eye boy that needed a boost. Things were OK, just

boring, so boring. His life with his mother since his father had been deported back to Germany

was much more calm. His Mother Alice Brown worked as a Legal Assistant with a boring group of
five attorneys. With her husband around her last name was Braun but since the forces separation,
she had Americanized it.

I awoke to the feeling of fingers on my chest. I hadn't even remembered falling asleep after Madam Selene left me for the night. I'd had no intention to drift so quickly, but as it turned out, the allure of a warm bed to sleep in after many nights spent in a cage was too much to overcome.

But what was this? This rhythmic poking of my chest by what felt like foreign fingers.

I opened my eyes abruptly to find two girls leaning over me. The one to whom the fingers belonged kept pushing it against my chest through the soft fabric of the linen dress.

"I am Selene," the woman said after briefly stepping away to retrieve a robe for me to cover up. "You may call me Madam Selene, or just Madam will suffice."

I nodded as I quickly draped the robe over my naked body. The soft material felt heavenly atop my bare skin, a stark contrast to the rough tunic that clung to my body the past few weeks.

"And you are?" I heard her ask. I hadn't yet had the opportunity to ponder my new circumstance, but that still would have to wait.

"Rowen, ma'am—" I paused, "Madam."

I remember the day we first met. He'd walked through the doors of the orphanage half shrouded behind a tall woman I would never see again. It had been difficult to make out his face in the dimly lit hallway, but I could tell he was terrified of everything around him. Then again, who wouldn't be?
 
Unlike him, my first memories had been of this place. I imagine I would have been just as terrified of these rundown walls in his shoes. For me, this was home, and even back then at the tender age of 7, I knew they would be home for him too.

Day 1

I was 16 and I was desperate. Oh, not because I was bullied in school. I was but that wasn’t it. I was used to THAT. No, the problem was mother and her health. That and money, or rather the lack thereof.

My name was Chris. I had been the youngest of four boys. My older brothers were all away at college. My parents were divorced, and I was living with my mother. It was on my eighteenth birthday that my mother and I went out to dinner. Toward the end of the meal, Mom said, “Chris, this is your last day as a boy, because tomorrow you will be my daughter.” I laughed and said, “Mom, get real, I will always be your son, and nothing will ever change that.” She smiled, “I have always wanted a daughter, and from tomorrow you will be known as Crystal.” I frowned.
