“Please don’t be mad at him. He’s embarrassed about changing into a girl and is afraid of how people will react. If you freak out, it will make him feel justified in keeping my existence secret, and I’m just as real as he is. Both of us remember being the original Jamie, but both of us have changed.”

“He said you’ve changed your name to Artemis? Why? Jamie works fine for a girl as well as a boy.”

 

Better for a girl than a boy, I thought, remembering some of the teasing I’d had to put up with. No sense bringing that up now, though.

“No,” I said firmly, shutting the magazine and handing it back to him. “Do not want.”

After we were driving for a while, everybody seemed tired and therefore the talking stopped. Mary fell asleep after her long flight. Her head leaned on my shoulder while she was sleeping. I gently touched her hair and face and whispered: Get some nice rest, big sis. Soon we will be home. Dad seemed tired too and it was slowly getting dark. I felt so happy and loved in this very moment. My best friend, mentor and role model was finally with me again. I have been feeling more and more confident since I met Sammy and her friends.

I got to know Doug so quickly in fact that it felt like I knew him my whole life. Nothing seemed out of bounds, except my dark secret. And even there Doug got to know me better than I know myself. The real me.

I stayed in school that day, having missed one of my classes, my dad picked me up shortly after school ended.

We stayed home that evening, ordered in pizza, and watched a couple of movies. I wasn't paying a lot of attention to the movies, I don't even remember which ones they were, but several times, seeing a woman that looked vaguely like mom caused me to burst into tears.

Everything, and I do mean everything, changed for me the day that my mother died. That was three years ago, I was ten years old.

She was on her way to work, she liked to be in the office early; that was quite normal for her, especially as she was likely to become a partner in the law firm she worked at, they were on the point of offering it to her when her life ended in just a few brief seconds.

We arrive at the hospital, it’s about half past 6. I was expecting to head for the same critical care ward that I had seen Amber last. Instead, dad leads me to a different floor. Amber’s condition must have improved. We enter to find a smiling Amber just finishing dinner. “Aaron!” the excitement in my sister's voice makes my heart swell with joy. “Oh, it’s so good to see you!”

“No mom, everything is fine!” Yvette stands in her living room, phone to her head, a crumpled tissue in her other hand. The new diamond on her ring finger glinted from the sunlight that shone into her apartment. The hormones had made her much more emotional now that she was back on them.

"Come on man, this is heaven." My friend Andrew attempts.

"Dude if we get caught I heard the cheerleaders were ruthless." I reply.

"But the risk Is worth it!" he counters. I finally agree with him and we wait until school is over. When everyone leaves for home, we meet up outside of the girl's locker room. When the girls soccer team comes to get changed we quickly pull out our smartphones and turn them on. The girls go in without saying a word. Andrew smiles and I stay silent, we couldn't screw this up.
