Sophie gave him ten seconds at best, interpreting her step-brother’s response in a more figurative manner. Why give him a full minute, when it was much more fun to surprise him? Either Sam was already wearing the dress, or still in the process of putting it on. If it was the former, amazing; otherwise, Sophie could double down about how he needed help.

After the heady delights of living as Catherine Morland in Regency Bath, I came down to earth and back to normality, or at least as normal as my life had now become.

"--Entertainment" Madam Selene had dragged the word, and I could see the exact moment she noticed the cut on my cheek because her eyes looked like they might bulge out of their sockets at any moment.

She got out of her chair and marched all the way over to me, stomping her feet, and I had to fight the urge to retreat.

Madame Selene grabbed my jaw and tilted my face to get a better look at what had to have been no more than a scratch. Still, she frowned.

"What is the second rule?" she asked me after giving my jaw a squeeze that conveyed her frustration.

Chapter 22

On Tuesday morning, she rang Wendy at work, to let her know that she was at the apartment. She had rung home fairly regularly to let them know how things were getting on with the tour. She was having breakfast in the restaurant when Ted came in.

“Good morning, Willow. How was the tour? Carlo sent you an invoice at the beginning of the month and wondered why you hadn’t paid, so I told him you were on the other side of the world and were good for it.”

I awoke to the feeling of fingers on my chest. I hadn't even remembered falling asleep after Madam Selene left me for the night. I'd had no intention to drift so quickly, but as it turned out, the allure of a warm bed to sleep in after many nights spent in a cage was too much to overcome.

But what was this? This rhythmic poking of my chest by what felt like foreign fingers.

I opened my eyes abruptly to find two girls leaning over me. The one to whom the fingers belonged kept pushing it against my chest through the soft fabric of the linen dress.

"I am Selene," the woman said after briefly stepping away to retrieve a robe for me to cover up. "You may call me Madam Selene, or just Madam will suffice."

I nodded as I quickly draped the robe over my naked body. The soft material felt heavenly atop my bare skin, a stark contrast to the rough tunic that clung to my body the past few weeks.

"And you are?" I heard her ask. I hadn't yet had the opportunity to ponder my new circumstance, but that still would have to wait.

"Rowen, ma'am—" I paused, "Madam."

The rest of the way to the mall, Sadie observed Chris’s process for his latest task. After seeing how it amused the others, as well as how fun it was to get Amy’s cousin to stumble through explanations of why he was saving each particular picture, she kept up the questions and comments. Despite the inappropriate nature of what they were talking about, Sadie somehow managed to keep up her innocent demeanor. It was a confusing contrast to Amy’s smug attitude and Julia’s more dominant energy.

A woman wakes in an alley with no name, no memories, and a haunting sense that something is terribly wrong. But one word stirs something deep Artemis. With only that name and flashes of strange things, she’s thrust into a world she doesn’t recognize. As she searches for clues to her identity and what happened to her it becomes clear her past isn’t just lost… it may be dangerous.

This story is a follow up story to Eidolon Nexus: The Shattered Realm however it is not necessary to read the previous story if you don’t want to as with the main character having no memory it works if you have or haven’t read it. Chapter Six: Out in the Open

Their next meeting wasn’t at the studio. It was a small wine bar in the West Village with candles guttering in old glass bottles and a chalkboard menu that changed with the weather. Ava arrived first and texted a photo of the corner table; Aria stared at the image, at the two empty glasses catching candlelight, and felt the quiet throb of possibility.

The website looked discreet but warm: Ava & Co. Transformations—NYC’s Premier MTF Makeover Studio. Tasteful before-and-afters. Testimonials that sounded like whispered confessions. A calendar widget with a few weekday openings and a handful of Saturday slots that vanished as he hovered over them, like they were frightened of his indecision.

Arjun booked a Tuesday evening under the name “A. Patel.” It took him half an hour to press confirm and three seconds to pray he hadn’t made a terrible mistake.
